The Factually most badass Videogame Opening ever.

came in here to post Full Throttle, glad to see it's been represented (i still have that Gone Jackals song on my ipod playlist)

so i'll throw what i think is a pretty underrated opening... it's not flashy or anything, just really good:

Battlefield 1942

No one has yet mentioned a Wing Commander game I see. 2's was awesome and IV's was so long but good none the less. Out of recent games, I think Killzone 2 has a great one.

Of all the Wild ARMs intros, I actually like the 3rd game's the most.

But overall, I'd have to give it up to Metal Gear Solid 2. I remember watching that intro so many times before it came out. Kingdom Hearts was another intro I would just watch over and over and over again.

Could Tim Schafer games possibly be more overrated? I mean, honestly and with a complete lack of sarcasm, is it actually possible? The widespread, unadulterated love for them makes me want to hate them even more than I already do, so I guess it is technically possible. Interesting.

play your PC anytime in the mid 90's? :lol

Forgot to mention Intro of KH3 :
Kingdom Hearts 3

The Kingdom Hearts one doesn't count though. We don't have any videos or even screens of KH3, let alone the opening. That video is just the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts 2. It gives the fans a small glimpse into the future of the series. The original Kingdom Hearts had one to.

Here is the bonus ending that was in the original KH.

Intros and Openings get mixed up in this thread...

As far as openings go, nothing beats Silent Hill 2 because of the music alone (although I wouldn't call it "badass"):

(Had to search a little to find a version without the talking added after the first playthrough)

I don't know too many (good) intros, unfortunately, but the already mentioned MGS2 is an excellent choice.

Edit: That Neo-Contra opening was pretty funny. :lol I wonder who invented that "shoot while doing a sideways somersault" thing.

Years and years ago FF8 was on the top of my list, but over the years I have manage to grow so cold towards the franchise, its literally dead to me, and I cant even watch or play FF 3 4 7 8 or 9 without dying inside. I just really dislike them now.

The only one I can stomach today is FF6, and I suppose not surprisingly FF6 has my favorite intro. That music is etched into my mind forever.

Shame about FF, when my interest in the games waned so did alot of my love for console gaming in general. I guess that franchise was sort of the cornerstone for me.

that's another good one

fuck it's hard to get a definitive answer to this question.

Mass Effect has a pretty bad ass opening. You're given a good sense that your character is a bad ass before you even see him plus the heroic build up gets you hyped to play.

Suikoden 3 is cool, but tbh I think the intro to 2 is better in pretty much every way.

3 is a bunch of cool scenes with cool music. 2 feels like it actually tells a story.

Also -

1. Is there any token answer for these threads except for Wild ARMs?
2. If not, doesn't it being the only token answer make it the true #1? :D

Lost Odyssey's entire intro is great. From the moment that you press start 'til the moment you see the game's title; which is like a half an hour period.

Amazing CGI war, seamless transition to real time, then back to CGI for the end of the war and then a short travel through a little overworld area before a beautiful CGI intro to the game's main city with great music. Has it all.
:D :D :D

Fact/thread

Props to all you Full Throttle fans though...Very close personal second.

I was going to comment - did no-one else own a Mega CD?

'Game Creative Stafff... Wolfteam'.

Another vote for Suikoden III, at least for an animated intro.

Every way? III's intro was better at least from a technical standpoint. It actually had animation that ran higher than 2-3fps :lol. Whether II tells a story better than III is arguable, since III tells a story too IMO.

And yes, of course Super Metroid has the best opening of all time. It has the best everything of all time.

good job. that's the one.

I seriously don't mean to derail this thread, but I have to just posit real quick -- and sorry, please don't derail along with me -- but I have an uncontrollable urge to say that no 16 bit title (or 32 bit or 64 bit for that matter) even comes close to holding up as well as super metroid in 2009. this game still looks awesome, such great art and animation. it's just unmatched.
