Them not turning into the Power Rangers until
an hour and a half
into the movie is a mindbogglingly bad mistake especially considering the intended audience of this movie probably doesn't have the attention span to wait that long before getting some actual Power Ranger action.

Exactly.

The whole thing is a shit show and I stand by my opinion of that since the very first trailer. Tone deaf and totally missing the target audience.

For what it's worth, Neogaf favorite reviewer loves it;

That isn't Armond White.

They were not good. Why were people excited for this to begin with? I mean, come on. It couldn't possibly be more than a half step above Max Steel.

Not that I think this will be a good movie, but I certainly don't think it's a bad movie simply because they don't "morph into the uniforms" a certain number of times. I mean, seriously, what kind of a story, character development do you get in the scenes of the Rangers calling out their spirit animals and holding up their coins? Having less of that makes this a bad movie? Please.

I've heard it compared to the original 1990s TMNT film in that way, which is fine by me.

To be fair, the 1990s TMNT film was definitely channeling the comic property tonally much more than the animated TV show. It's just that the latter is what most kids were familiar with.

The tone is giving me serious vibes. It's just me.

I understand they need to appeal to kids and not do something like a Scott Pilgrim where half of the movie is a meta on the Sentai genre.

But what kids is this supposed to be appealing to? I work with kids and no one cares about Power Rangers or even has mentioned the movie.

The marketing isn't hitting at points that I expected something like this to do. It reminds me of the Fantastic 4 reboot. It's just there.

And comparisons to TMNT 89 are laughable. The franchise was at the height of popularity and from the very first scene you saw the Turtles. That's what kids went into the theater expecting and that's exactly what they got. PR 2017 looks to be trying to go after the YA book base, but is like 5 years late.

Fuck, I'm gonna be disappointed by my favorites Zack and Trini I can feel it.

Zack was pretty good until the camp fire scene. He just completely sucked there. But the 'fuck it's personality in the first and second act were pretty good.

Trini was quiet throughout the entire first and second act. She was easily the worst part of the movie for me.

Watching it tomorrow, hope to be surprised.

I haven't actually watching PR since the initial US series and the two movies.

That's what I was wondering, I know a 4 year old who loves power rangers but he isn't interested in the slightest of what o showed him of the movie.

This doesn't feel like the big Hollywood Blockbuster adaptation of Power Rangers, it doesn't feel like an event, but like a minor studio release in the schedule. I don't see it moving big numbers, or getting a sequel.

Are there any nods or allusions to the fact it was originally a Japanese show?

Also disappointed re: transformations
there's only one. Usually in the average Toku episode the hero transforms like three times.

Power Rangers is a *kids show*. What the fuck do you expect from it?

It's literally action for action sake. The comedy is geared towards 12 year olds. You're looking at it from an adult perspective - it wasn't meant for you. It's like saying "Captain Planet shouldn't have had Ma-Ti because heart isn't an element!"

Every kid I knew wanted to play Power Rangers when I was a kid. We even got the stupid fake weapons and would play fight. That's what it was meant for.

This isn't really an effective criticism when there are kids shows that have genuinely fantastic characters and storytelling. Not to say a light tone isn't valid, but 20-somethings playing teenagers, but while also having to be sanitary as to be appropriate for 6-year-olds makes for some wildly bad performances and wholly uninteresting characters.

The 1st Power Rangers movie isn't all that good but at least it tried. Turbo is just plain terrible and I hope the new movie is better than that.

The martial arts are the only reason people like power rangers.
When I was watching Power Rangers as a kid I had no idea what martial arts were. I liked it for the crazy monsters, people in cool suits with powers, and giant robot fights. This isn't Super Sentai, Power Rangers isn't about martial arts, even if they do ground the insanity.

So there's a gratuitous shot of donut eating in this movie and donuts are apparently important.

Did Kamen Rider Wizard write this?!

Reading a bunch of reviews, this movie isn't worth my time as a Sentai fan.
The real Western Power Rangers movie remains Pacific Rim.
Absolutely awful that people owning the brand let this happen instead of taking pages out of Del Toro's success.
Go watch/rewatch that instead of giving Lionsgate hacks your money.
Hopefully the sequel turns out to be good as well.

I'm hoping for a Pacific Rim-esque film where it's enjoyable in a ridiculous way but doesn't really hold up to any sort of serious scrutiny.

Pacific Rim holds up just fine though.

I think I'll enjoy this movie. I liked Power Rangers as a kid, I'm sure there'll be something to like in it.

Pacific Rim was shit though.

Can't wait till tomorrow, so hyped!
I'm hoping for a lot of fanservice, so reading these reviews I'm in for something good.

A bit annoying the only showings here in my town are early in the evening and I have to work all day, drive home, pick up the girlfriend and keeping my fingers crossed there's no traffic jam.

Pacific Rim at least had robots fighting in the first few minutes.

Power Rangers 2017 has nothing going for it in the first three quarters of the film except for teen drama, and it doesn't even sound like good teen drama.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind before even watching the movie.
