• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

The game series that makes you swoon.

GTA and the Elder Scrolls are the only games that make my heart start beating faster in anticipation. The wait can drive me insane in both accounts.

Since GTA is going to be PS3 exclusive, it looks as if I'll have to buy yet another 400 dollar machine this fall. As in love as I am with my 360, I also have to go where GTA goes.

The two series who, in retrospect, bring up feelings of true love would definitely be the Zelda series (especially Ocarina) and the Final Fantasies IV-X.

I'd wait a few months after GTA launches. Rockstar pulled that stunt with SA, and look what happened with that.

... if you're only buying one for GTA.

The Legend of Zelda.

Nothing else compares.

Even the stinkers have good parts to them (like Zelda II is dreadful to play, but it has a kickass soundtrack).

Fire Emblem. ESPECIALLY with Path of Radiance. Plot holes and underdeveloped characters aside, it's one of my favorite series ever now because of the most recent title, and I highly await more to come.

Mario Bros. The old school ones. SMB and SMB 3 were my first games ever. SMW and SM64 hold a special place in my heart too.

Sonic the Hedgehog. Again, a favorite for the oldschool ones (and Sonic Rush, which kicks your ass). Not a fan of the new, DBZ Sonic (referring to VA and obvious hit in level design and game quality).

Oh. And KOTOR. That's awesome.

Console GTA's. That's the only thing that can get me that close, though I swoon more for new IP's I haven't tried yet but hear good things about. I like to play the Halo's, Metal Gears, etc. but I don't get the insanity GAF feels for them. Zelda, Mario, etc. don't seem to be what they once were.

Zelda is THE series that keeps me coming back for more.

Runners-up:

Advance Wars
Castlevania (only 2D so far)
F-Zero
Final Fantasy (old school or tactics)
Fire Emblem
Mario Kart
Mega Man
Metroid
Resident Evil
Seiken Densetsu
Sonic (again old school)
Super Mario
Tales of ______

Prince of Persia trilogy and the Jak and Daxter games.

Hey I had to go with something different here. But those are the only two games series that I have actually opened and started playing on the day that I have bought them this whole last generation. Everything else gets purchased and shelved (almost like I save it for when I really can't wait. Very stupid system I know).

I'm going to have to steal some of your post. Except for the KOTOR part. I have to replace that with Grandia the Grandia series.

I also LOVE Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 2, but none of the other Mana games can compare. That game is just special.

Phantasy Star IV is another game that I absolutely loved. Suprisingly, I played through it when I was 11-12 years old. I can't say I love the whole series because I never played another PS game.

Finally, I have to add Pokemon to my list. No game has ever completely taken over my life like Pokemon did for those first 2-3 years. My Gameboy Color was just a Pokemon adapter. I had no other games for it.

Zelda, Fo' Sho'.
Smash Brothers
ANY Lucasarts Graphic Adventure
The King's Quest Series
Blizzard games of any sort
MGS
Chrono Trigger/Cross/Break? :(

I used to be hardcore FF fan, but they lost me this gen. I loved 1,4, 6, and 7, enjoyed 8, love 9, and thought 10 was decent. After that, I dunno what happened; X-2 was frilly pop fan-service, KH had whoring of well known and beloved FF characters, Advent Children was fan service for those who'll squirt at the mere hint of "One Winged Angel," FFXII looks decent but the MASSIVE trouble that's gone on during its production has me worried, and after losing track of the multiple FF VII spinoffs, I just stopped caring.

On the other hand, after playing DQ8 (my first one) I could be on the pathway of becoming a DQ fanboy. :)

Fucking ZELDA

Zelda is my Number 1 favorite franchise. Cream of the crop here.

Even through ups and downs, you can't beat Super Mario.

Only Metal Gear for me now. Back in the old days it used to be Mario and Zelda, but those days are long gone.

It's all over the place, really.

At this point, Silent Hill does it.

I'm not a gigantic fan of the MGS games, but Christ, they could show a trailer of Snake walking around in a furniture store to the MGS2 theme and I'd be pumped.

There are others. Sega stuff tends to get me nostalgic.

But the biggie? Virtual On. I don't care how bad Marz was, as I've avoided it. But a new VO game would make me giddy like a schoolgirl.

Mario (the real ones)
Zelda
Megaman X- Still has a place in my heart even though Capcom's been doing pretty shitty this gen.
Final Fantasy

I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones that immediately came to mind.

The main Pokemon series (e.g. not Colosseum/XD) and nothing else. Even at its absolute lowest point, AKA Gold/Silver/Ruby/Sapphire (not Crystal, and definitely not Emerald), it's still better than every Zelda game not named A Link to the Past, every Final Fantasy game other than FF6, and so on.

The absolute closest runners-up just had disqualifying faults:
Advance Wars had Advance Wars 1, Fire Emblem had Sacred Stones (a B+ game isn't enough to "make me swoon"), DDR relies too heavily on songlists, early Dragon Quest games were in the B- range, 2D Castlevania sucked on the original Game Boy, Seiken Densetsu had Legend of Mana and Sword of Mana, Zelda had Zelda II (and the CD-i games, but let's not discuss those), Metroid had Metroid 2 and Prime 2, and Kirby had Dreamland 3 and Kirby 64.

Smash Bros. got disqualified too, but that's mainly because it's only had two games, which usually isn't enough time to have made a mistake to begin with.

2D Castlevania and Metroid. I want my PSP widescreen sexy remake of SOTN and my DS 2.5D remake of Super Metriod.

Half-Life 2 comes close though.
