The Giant Bombcast 1-6-09

If you new listeners aren't completely digging the bombcast yet, I'd say stick with it. This weeks episode seemed a little weak, probably due to coming off a long break and a lack of interesting news at the beginning of the year (Vinny was gone, too).

The GOTY delib is a must listen, last week's installment for all the new blood out there.

Criticizing the bombcast for not being 1up yours is pointless. It sounds like a lot of people who dislike it haven't listened consistently for a few weeks in a row. Personally I started listening right after Jeff was fired from Gamespot, and once I learned their style I was hooked.

But yeah, this week's was subpar.

People dissapointed in this episode should really give the past couple podcasts a listen. Maybe then they will understand why this is the current leader in gaming podcasting.

Yup, last week was great, and you'll learn a lot about their personalities.

Also, I want the synth (or whatever it's called) to be a permanent member.

Comapring Giant Bomb to 1up is really not fair. Stylistically they are quite different and I think Giant Bomb goes for a much more informal format despite having a semblance of structure every week whereas 1up Yours had a much more formal feel to it.

And let us not forget that Giant Bomb talks about energy drinks from time to time (which I love) which makes it pretty apparent that they don't take the whole proceedings too seriously.

I'm going to hang in there. I like all of the people on there, just something about it is taking me a while to get into it. Player One podcast was a bit easier to get into for some reason.

Do I really do that? I'm sitting here saying "while" to myself and not hearing it. Maybe it's something about our microphone/pop screen setup?

Mr. Brad, I don't think there's a problem...it might be the microphone setup though.

I hear it occassionally, but it's nothing to fuss over.

:lol @ that link. Yeah you do do that a bit. Not too bad though. I don't mind but I've noticed it.

Don't tell me I'm the first person to bring it up! You do it at least once every podcast. No big deal. Now you'll have a complex and avoid the word completely. ;p

Repeat after me, "We who wake-up wide eyed while wrestling walruses without windows."

Ask your cowerkers. I wonder if they notice because they definitely say it different.

yeah...I finished the episode and thought, "Wow, what a horrible episode for all of 1up to die on. I can only imagine the complaints from people about the voice thing."

For new comers I'd check out some of their TGS stuff, game of the year discussion or if you've played SPORE or MGS4 check out those special episodes.

And chill guys with the 1up comparisons, if your in love with a particular flavour then just jumping over to another type of food and expecting it to taste the same is silly, I've never really followed Bombcast before but I'm going to give it a chance (I did think they were great on the last 1up yours though), I believe once I get familiar with their radio personalities then I think I'll enjoy it allot more, I don't come on here expecting this to be a 1up replacement becuase it isn't 1up, nothing can change that.

Anyway, at times like these when were losing valuable assets in gaming journalism we need to support the few true enthusiast's we have left like the guys from Boombcast that still have a public voice, if anything, the recent happenings over at 1up.com has taught me one thing, we need to actively support these guys/gals more, I personally feel a bit guilty with regards to what happened at 1up, I never really took part over their, rarely did I even click on their links or even read their reviews through properly, I loved their podcast/s though, and have been following them from the beginning, but I don't think that was enough, anyway I'm rambling now.

Just try not be too hard on these guys becuase of the anger your still feeling from losing 1up yours/fm/show etc, remember even the guys that are on this very podcast are probably as gutted as many of us, give them a chance.

Mr. Gerstmann not liking Mafia, eh? Can't understand it 'cause it's one of my favorite games, but oh well, it's his loss.

I second the GOTY Bombcast recommendations. It's good stuff. It's lengthy and they discuss every game in their top 10 one-by-one, and then compare and contrast them, with very little off-topic talk as far as I recall if you dislike that sort of thing. It's pretty much all games.

(I haven't listened to the new one yet.)

Maybe it's a sign of my immaturity but I lol'd pretty hard at Jeff cursing into the voice box. :lol

Does anyone else think the Wii motion+ is going to backfire? There is no way the mainstream is going to be able to understand what that peripheral brings to the table. It's too abstract. It's not something you can easily demonstrate on the box. That, and as far as I know there will only be one in the pack-in, so that may make multiplayer imbalanced (if people bother to use it at all).

And they mentioned that the end of 09 looked pretty barren, but won't we be getting CoD6 this year?

I think Motion + is going to amount to very little... mostly because it's optional. It'll be just like the balance board... a few games may support it, but every game still has to meet a baseline that removes Motion + from the picture, so that on some level, every game will still be programmed without it in mind.

I also think the hardcore that believe it'll save the Wii's wonky motion sensing ability are up for disappointment as well.

Maybe it's because I have completely different affinities, video game-wise, from Giant Bomb's staff, but were their tastes in games this...um...homogenous at Gamespot, and were they this dismissive of certain games? I don't mind that much, since I listen exclusively for the banter, anyway, but I'd offer the friendly suggestion that they either say, "I don't have much interest in ______," for games that they don't play in lieu of, "Yeah, well, it's ___. That's about it," or that they better justify some of their more dubious opinions (Grand Theft Auto 4's story, Banzo And Kazooie: Nuts And Bolts generally) to make their positive and negative opinions feel a little less arbitrary.

That said, I will gladly accept a PM telling me how to get on the Bombcast to explain how Kirby's Dream Land 3 is different from the others and in which The King Of Fighters game Ralf and Clark first appeared. *refreshes inbox compulsively*

What the hell? All these fresh faces...

..welcome, brothers, to Rapture!
:lol :lol Thread's a little bigger now, huh? I see Jeff finally cracked and got the voice box! I also agree with the KZ2 talk about marketing the game. This is one of, of not the most important title for Sony this year. Unless Sony is ramping up on advertisement and we don't know what it is yet.... Having a trailer showing gameplay in front of a movie sounds like a great idea. I remember seeing an ad for Halo 2 in theaters (can't remember what movie though). I think putting a trailer in front of a big movie would go a long way in getting the word out. I really want this game to succeed. They already have my $60.00 + tax for this game due to the beta. Hopefully, we'll start seeing some ads soon...

I love when Jeff does his "far away" voice. That gets me every time.

:lol and the Marcus Fenix voice from a few eps back was great. that entire show had me cracking up the whole drive to work

They had a funny discussion when that whole thing went down with fourzerotwo's blog post about that producer from Activision. "Bolt action rifle to center mass". :lol

Don't know about the Beer rolling though. Might be an eastern state thing. That and I'm more of a bourbon guy myself.

The most commonly rolled beers are probably Cooper's Pale Ale and Cooper's Sparkling Ale (which you can buy most places in Brisbane (and it's a South Australian brewery so I'd assume most other places). That style of ale has a natural cloudy sediment that settles to the bottom of the bottle due to the bottle fermentation process.

Both good beers, for the record.

I personally loved the Your in the movies director voice. :lol :lol

Will definitely listen to this on the way to class.

I personally didn't enjoy it. Not because of different tastes are anything, but I didn't like the fact that they're not descriptive enough when talking about games. It seams as if they don't enjoy playing games, and that they are just there to talk about it because that's what they do. For example, when someone was trying to get deep into some Fallout 3 discussion, I had my ears wide opened. But the speaker was cut off by someone else which completely changed the subject to something irrelevant, some banter of sort, and they never got back to fallout 3. Maybe its because there's really nothing significant out right now, but there is still games out that many didn't play yet. And a nice descriptive discussion of said game would be greatly appreciated. At the end of the day, I'll check back in every now and then, to see if things get better.

Did you listen to the GotY podcast, it was the previous one? that epic show should provide enough straight game talk to last a month. I personally thought this weeks ep, was a nice break from the straight game talk of last weeks.

Oddly, this podcast made me more interested in Prince of Persia than anything else I have read or seen about it. The way they characterized the game makes me want to give it a second look.

Also, Crank was a friggin' awesome movie!!

They weren't really feeling Fallout 3. They nominated it for GoTY out of duty, but it wasn't on anyone's personal favorites list. It's weird when you hear them say, "Well, the better game is x but my favorite game is y." I guess they're looking at it from an entirely different perspective. They must appreciate all the work that goes into making something that epic, even if it didn't tickle their fancy.

Yeah, anyone not feeling this episode should immediately go listen to last week's instead. Epic epic GOTY debate.

Also: "Jeff! Pills here!" :lol

The Desert Strike / Jungle Strike talk brought back a lot of good memories. Those games were THE SHIT back in the day. I would love to see a DS remake of either of those.
