I never saw a video ad before a video on Giantbomb. Mind linking me to one with it ? :lol

Are you in the US? I'm pretty sure they are US only. They are just 17 second segments of the live action ODST ad. I've seen some Batman ones as well but far less frequently.

I guess they don't bother me so much because I pretty much only watch the Endurance Run, Tang and Quick Looks which are all 7 minute to an hour and half long videos. If I watched a lot of 1-2 min game trailers it would bother me.

I've been getting them in the UK for a few days now. I don't mind them at all, and I really have to wonder how greedy and entitled people are that they get worked up over 17 seconds. How else are they supposed to build a sustainable site providing free content?

I'm in Brazil and I never got them till a couple days ago. Now they're in every video. Maybe it is a bug? I don't know.

Halo:ODST is coming out here on the 22nd, so maybe I'm supposed to get them?

Whatever, like somebody else said: 17 seconds for 30 minutes-1 hour video content. You get more ads per content watching TV.

Regarding the actual AD in the site, Jeff putting a disclaimer at the end of the Halo:ODST review ("Disclosure: The game featured in this review is or was an advertised product on giantbomb.com.") just shows how awesome they are.

It's funny, as thanks to Giant Bomb my interest in ODST has plummeted. The front page of GB is so obnoxious now it hurts.

-HEY HERE'S A HUGE BANNER ABOUT ODST

-HAVE YOU SEEN THE ODST QUICK LOOK YET?
-HOW ABOUT THE ODST REVIEW?
-DUDE, EDIT THE ODST WIKI AND RECEIVE SOME PRIZES
-YO DOG, BETTER PUT ANOTHER AD (MAKE THIS ONE SQUARE, NOT A BANNER - INNOVATION!) UNDERNEATH ALL THE OTHER ADS...just in case
-WANNA WATCH A VIDEO? HOPE YOU LIKE A 17 SECOND ODST AD PRIOR TO EVERY VIEWING

Christ. It's actually lowered my respect for the site quite a bit.

G.T.F.O

I've been listening to a few ER episode today and for some reason I really love this episode of the Endurance Run.

http://www.giantbomb.com/endurance-run-persona-4-part-23/17-310/

It's not the funniest
(funniest episode(s) are involve the ghoul persona)
but it's early on. They were still learning how to play and against all odds they defeat Yikiko's shadow. Vinny is pumped, out of the gate. I think they read a few comments that got them worked up before the fight.

They are also very reluctant to do anything because they have 1 day left and they just wasted an entire day on the capsule machine.

It starts out slow with some battle preparations but it's all worth it.

Just watched this week's QOTW. Bummed about them not heading over to Japan. Their video coverage for trade events is top notch, so it's a shame that they won't be covering it.

I'll echo some of the video comments and say Brad is getting a bit fat.

Oh god the capsule machine episode was amazing. That spawned all the "you spent they day..." jokes they used throughout. It's a shame they couldn't use the capsule machine on 3/20. That would've been great.

So true. They have to make money somehow. Just deal with it and stop complaining.

Sheesh, people are allowed to not like one aspect of a website while loving the rest. It's not all or nothing!

And it's so weird people are willing to justify it because "they need to make money" given the whole reason GiantBomb exists in the first place. After all, Gamespot just had to make some money somehow, right?

Regardless, all I was saying was that it was obnoxious, which it is. I can ignore it just fine, but I thought it was funny that GiantBomb won over one ODST purchase while driving my sale away :lol

Yeah, I can't believe it, I presumed they were, and they do some of the best TGS coverage there is.
Sadface...

I think it has mostly to do with the clothes he wears, he seems to be a large guy and some of his fits are unflattering for his body type. I also cannot believe I just made that comment.

It wasn't the ads that Gamespot ran, the issue was publisher PR pressuring the site's management who tried to pressure editorial. Ultimately resulting in the firing of Jeff Gerstmann. At least that's how the story goes.

Ads are to be expected. That's how free entertainment is supported. As long as it doesn't effect their content, it's hard to get upset.

so basically all the giantbomb people should work for your entertainment for free? good idea.

Again with the "all or nothing" argument. You must be a joy to argue with in real life.

No, I am not saying that. Ads are perfectly fine, and I'm not complaining about the general notion of advertisements. But on the front page alone I can count 3 flash ads and the entire background dedicated to one game. I can't watch a single video without watching an ad for that exact game...the video player is ALSO flanked by 3 ads. How can you argue that isn't pretty extreme?

I love GB and I want them to make money, they definitely deserve it. But this just seems to be a bit much, is all. That's all I was saying.

Anyways, not like it matters that much, I just felt compelled to defend myself, as I'm not hating on GB. I spent the better part of my afternoon watching some QLs today. So yeah!

They went over the ad situation at PAX at the panel. Check out the videos from then and it'll give you a good idea about how they've been wanting to handle advertisements.

IMO, if the site had a white background the ads wouldn't be so noticeable.

I don't really mind the ads, dudes gotta get paid. As long as the ads don't physically divert me from the site, or bring up some obnoxious full page ad that says "click this tiny box to go to site," etc., I am ok with constant background flash.

Plus, they have a disclaimer at the bottom of their ODST review, which is a nice statement of accountability.

Who gives a shit? How does dark blue background artwork that takes up a usual empty black space bother you that much? "Driving your sale away"...are you kidding? Go visit IGN or Gamespot if GiantBombs ads bother you so much. It is not an "all or nothing" issue, it is a douchey thing to even complain about.

Listen to the PAX panel. The Giant Bomb crew has always been pretty upfront and honest as to their approach to ads on the site. Anything that can keep the site profitable and producing consistent high quality content is fine with me.

I live in the same state the site is based in and my homepage is just typical GiantBomb.
That IS fucking absurd!

Wat?

I don't really mind too much but I thought that they said they weren't going to do giant site skins at the PAX panel. Either I remember wrong or the money was too good to pass up on.

Huh? I live in the US and Giant Bomb does not look like that for me. The only skinned pages I've seen are the on the Halo wiki pages.

Looks like that for me, dunno why certain people are getting it.

I've downloaded the podcast every week since launch. I watched 100 hours of endurance run without paying a cent (outside the cost of internet connection, and a copy of P4, which it inspired me to buy). That's 150-200 hours of content that was not aggresively ad supported - screw banner adds and front page skins, I feel like I should be sending them a cheque.

There's also some MMO ad that runs, but I've never seen it. I only notice it in my flash file download manager. I'm sort of tired of that ODST ad as well, but what can ya do?

I'm sad they aren't headed to Japan though... it would have been great this year, with their video content flowing, but I guess spending the thousands of dollars to send everyone there probably isn't the best thing you can do in these "troubled economic times".

I just realized why.
I can't believe that wasn't the first thing that crossed my mind.

I only see the ads if viewing from IE. I use firefox mainly, and have never seen one ad.

I'm with you buddy.

I kind of agree that the ads are a bit OTT, if I'm honest. Or, at least, that they really ruin the great aesthetics of the site. Not that it puts me off the site in the slightest, as these guys deserve to make as much money as they possibly can considering the great work they're doing.

Funny sidenote: I actually clicked the banner to support them, something I've NEVER done before, and it came up on the Xbox site as "page not found." :lol

Listening to the 1up podcast gave me an idea: The GB guys need to do a Yakuza endurance run.
Yakuza(2) could actually be applicable to the same style of video commentating that the Persona 4 Endurance Run had. Of course it's not turn based so it would lay heavier on the person playing and assigning the other person to back-seat drive much more.

GiantBomb is the only gaming site (apart from gaf) that I visit. It's also the only site where I watch gaming videos (those quick looks are the best) and listen to their weekly Podcast. I dont have a user account on their site, but knowing a few things about web development I can honestly say they've done a heck of a job designing/developing the site. Not to mention all the content they add on (almost) a daily basis.

I saw the halo ODST add's before each of the Quick Looks I watched the other day, I also saw the Halo ODST side banners on the main page... Did not bother me one bit. if anything I felt I needed to click on the banners, and watch a few more quick looks just so that 17 seconds HALO ODST add can air again.

The GiantBomb crew deserve every penny they can get, god knows they work hard for it. Kudos to you guys, keep up the good work - hope Microsoft paid you guys welll for the adds.

indeed. bunch of whiny bitches ITT. waaahhh the site has a 17 second ad before my video. wahhh there's banner ads. wahhhh wahhhh.

The ads felt a bit annoying at first, then I realized that this was a free site that's given me hundreds of hours of great content.

So I don't mind so much.

I'd be up for that and if the Yakuza3 localisation news proves to be true it'd be timely, but only if whoever's doing it is also wants to play the game. The P4 run wouldn't have worked if Vinny and Jeff didn't want to play the game. Although a Yakuza ER would be a damn sight shorter. If they didn't bother with sidequests and such they could probably get through 1 and 2 in about a third of the time P4 took.

This man speaketh the truth. Giantbomb is fucking awesome and I couldn't care less if the site has banners or not. As long as the quality stays, I stay.

You know, after checking out their Dreamcast retrospects I actually started looking for ads to click on their site, that NEVER happens. :P Disappointed that I didn't find any. :P Awesome site really.

its not extreme, compared to almost any other major site.

from the way you mentioned gamespot and thats its somehow against what they stand for i thought you were trying to say there was some ethical problem with the site having ads.

to be honest, you do sound like you're hating on GB, just the parts of it you don't like, but clearly are still content to guzzle down their bandwidth for the parts that entertain you.
