The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

Man, loving all the videos from pax, and the dreamcast stuff was excellent (especially Sonic Adventure, Typing of the Dead and Chu Chu Rocket). Also, so many quick looks that aren't even from pax or the dreamcast spectacular! <3 Giant Bomb so much

Giant Bomb has really been churning out tons and tons of video content.
I love it. :D

The Dreamcast quick looks make regret not owning a Dreamcast back in the day.
Shenmue looks great, I don't get Brad's hate for it.

i wonder if they will do quicklooks for nba live 10 and nba 2k10. that would be awesome :D

i don't think they've ever done sports ones? but maybe they didn't start early enough (or they werent doing many) to do that last year.

From the GB faq:

How come you don't review every single game that comes out? Are you lazy?

Well, yeah, but the point is that Giant Bomb isn't interested in the fire-hose approach to video game coverage. Our editorial team is small and experienced, and our job is to highlight the stuff that we feel is significant, either to us on a personal level, or for video games at large. That's not everything, but it's still a lot. Though, we're not real big on sports games, so don't expect too much meaningful/informed Madden coverage.

They don't do them as they aren't fans of that genre.

It looks beautiful but also super shallow, at least from what they showed.

Combat is actually pretty deep for a 2D hack-and-slash. The cooking and blade crafting systems add some extra depth.

Edit: As usual, Giant Bomb proves that they're terrible at video games. They didn't use a single Secret Art (done by simply pressing a single button), they didn't take advantage of the fact that you can do a quick draw attack even when your swords are fully in tact, and they didn't even mention the sword gauges. All of these things are clearly explained in the tutorial. smh

God that Crazy Taxi QL is making me want to bust out my baby. I wanted to scream at him to double tap R for the speed boost. And hearing the Offspring for the first time in foreverthefuck... Whoo, memories.

Yet, it's what made me notice the game. So they're doing something right.

That Muramasa ql made it seem terrible. The backtracking was the most ridiculous thing I've seen in ages.
Yet, that's 100% truly represented as how it is on the game.

I spent like 20 minutes searching for a save point yesterday :lol

I'm not saying the whole idea of Quick Looks is bad. In fact, I think more websites should do it. But I think they should at least have a basic understanding of the game they're playing before doing one. Or at the very least, they shouldn't skip the tutorial.

I feel the same way. Much of the time it seems like the guys crack open a game and start filming immediately before even learning the basics. It ends up not feeling representative of the game as a whole, but rather the most awkward and least fun part of games (learning the rules and mechanics).

Still, I've watched every quick look they've done.

You typically get a bigger boost sliding from reverse to drive. You won't make it very far without crazy drifting / boosting.

inorite!

Giantbomb should know every little detail about every game in the history of the world so every obscure fan of any game can feel better and not nerd rage.

It's called a quicklook. Not a 'research said game and read all the instructions before playing the game' look.

Once they start changing the way they are doing things in the quicklooks just to please the odd fan of a game and turning it more into a product review, is the day quicklooks lose all their meaning.

I'm pretty sure this is the whole point of the quick looks. It is very much a "first impressions" type of thing.

Yes, it demonstrates how you would feel if you dropped into the game with no information. If you STILL found the game interesting, you'll get the game and do the "immersed look" yourself.

Seems like the point is to show a chunk of raw gameplay sans editing and scripted voice over like a video review. I don't think they need to be scholars of the games they preview, I just sometimes wish the quick looks were more representative of the game experience as a whole.

I don't think it is just "a chunk" of raw gameplay. It is the beginning chunk. Other than MMORPG quick looks I think every quick look as pretty much started at the beginning of the game.

The Infamous and Prototype ones started a good chunk of the way through the game, but those are the only ones I can think of. The vast majority of them have pretty much started right at the beginning, at least of all the ones I've seen. I like how they do them, as it basically gives a good feel for the game.

Dude, I'm not asking that they know every single thing about every game they do a quick look on. But them skipping on the Secret Art button is fucking pathetic. It's like if they started playing God of War and did nothing put mash the square button and ignored the triangle button altogether.

Yea, most of the time the quick look comes off as a bit too "wheee we're playing videogames" than anything to do with the actual game.

I want need a Shenmue endurance run.

They could totally do it like it was in real time, too! Start playing on November 29th and every time Ryo goes to sleep and starts a new day, they end the episode.

Then, once they finish Shenmue, they could start playing Shenmue 2 in February!

and then get incredibly pissed off at the game's ridiculous cliffhanger ending

Wow Shift's framerate and loading is really realyl bad.

That's just the video encoding. The game is smooth.

Muramasa looks really boring. I actually fell asleep during the quicklook. :lol

Ryan said they would do that very soon on the latest podcast actually! :D
No I think he said he wouldn't mind doing it, so nothing confirmed so far. The Darkest of Days quick look is pretty funny :lol .

Unless Brad does it,
then around March or April IIRC, he gets killed by Lan Di.

Don't like them... stop watching them.

You seem to have your knickers in quite a twist over something rather minor.

If someone was interested in a game they saw in a quick look I'm sure they'd look further into it.

The point of a quick look is to just show them previewing the game and their impression of it in real time.

Maybe they missed some feature of the game, but maybe that's not a fault of them, but a fault of the game? Not everyone reads the instructions of every game before playing...

Hilarious QL, but I do not feel they gave a fair look at Darkest of Days.

He never picked up the Henry rifle (which has 15 shots instead of 1 musket loaded), or showed the WWI part where he got an automated strike rocket launcher, or the automatic shotgun or the gun that aims for you. Really disappointed he didn't kill a blue guy, would of been hilarious I'm sure.

I love the game so I'm biased :lol
It does have some awesome parts to it, while still retaining the horrible, but that just makes it more awesome.

I didn't watch it yet, but the Secret Arts in Muramasa is just a mapped button that does the special of your equipped sword, it's a single button that holds great importance to the rest of the game.

It's like missing a cover button in Gears or a jump button in Uncharted. Seriously confused if someone outright overlooked a key face button.

I do like Giant Bomb, and their quick looks are usually amusing, but watching them play games sometimes, it's like watching my mother play, and I say this as someone who gets like 1:10 kill/death ratios in FPS's and doesn't play fighters because I know I cant compete. :lol

Fuck. It aims through things so I have to make sure the crosshair is not pointing at a hill you know. That takes skill.

Darkest of Days quick look did not disappoint! Wow, what a game!

You know what also takes skill? Using your future BALLS!
So how varied is the rest of the game? Besides Custers last stand, WWI and Rome any more fun ridiculous parts? :D
