Also Jeff's comment "I think this is a sign of PC gaming growing up and functioning like the rest of the world"... Good God, these guys shouldn't be allowed to even mention PC gaming without having Dave there, it's like reading a bad troll post here on GAF.

Yeah, it's like they have never heard of console games with dedicated servers like Warhawk, Battlefield 1943 and the upcoming MAG.

MAG's gonna have dedicated servers? Heh, it will probably need it seeing the player counts they are trying to cram in.

Going by what we've seen so far, MAG will feature tons of chokepoints, so yeah, there's no way around dedicated servers, as I understand it.

it's funny. no one on Gaf gives a shit about them not knowing anything about sports games. why? cuz Gaf doesn't know anything about sports games, either (I'm generalizing, OK? some people there and there might)

But as soon as they don't know (or appreciate) the details of a specific hardcore game (eg: Demon's Souls) or a specific genre or platform that Gaf happens to care about then WATCH OUT! Here come the pitchforks.

I have to wonder if there are gaps in the knowledge of gaffers around here for other games or history that the GB crew might know a lot about.

I also have to wonder if Gaf thinks the only qualification to be a games writer is to have an obsessive, compulsive knowledge of every single game in existence.

edit:

it was COD: classic, a limited edition extra, on MW2 launch day. what the fuck did you expect? It doesn't have anything to do with matchmaking in and of itself. :lol

There's a difference between not knowing and knowing it, and not knowing and not knowing it.

And GAF fails at that as well. How many times do we hear how Madden is the same game every year? A hardcore fan of Madden recognizes the changes instantly, and they are often significant. Most of GAF doesn't give a shit, so they don't recognize it. Same thing.

Gaf has like 50k members, you should probably not try to assign characteristics to everyone at once, don't cha think?

who cares people; I'm pretty sure the staff at Giantbomb find it comical in their lack of knowledge in PC games. That's why they have Dave there and that's why reason why dave rules. Another is the picture from matrix online night

Dave's pretty cool but he's yet to prove himself to have a clue either.

It's that they feel the need to share their supposed insight that gives anyone the ammo to complain at all.

Come on now, they do quite a few features that are incredibly closely-watched by corporate dudes. Whether they're marked as such or not is another thing entirely.

I honestly have no idea what you're even trying to say or imply here.:lol

I'm just referring to the Quick Looks where devs show off their game.

I'm not against it, quite the opposite because it makes it easier for me to get what the game's about, how it performs, that sort of thing.
But in these external Quick Looks, all they're doing is asking nice questions and stuff. They're used as an advertisement platform there.

That's probably even part of the business plan.

You mean the quicklook EX videos where they specifically state that a dev is there giving a quick demo of an upcoming game?

yes, real nefarious.

But those are labeled clearly as being with the developer on a demo. Still not seeing what you're getting at, is there some other nefarious plot going on?

I mean, I fail to see what's the difference between a demo and a trailer being shown on a site. They're both "free" advertisement for games, hell just talking about a game is free advertisement!

I didn't say it was nefarious. Is advertising nefarious? I don't think so.

But it IS advertising.

And if you put your guys in the middle so that they nod to the beat, well, how's that not being a corporate mouthpiece?

Yes, they're labeled clearly. And that's a good thing. I said "it's another thing entirely whether or not they point out that it's advertisement" for a reason.

Why be so defensive about it? It's not a big deal.

I think its also important to point out that all video game websites similar to GB, ie: previews & reviews focused; provide "trade press" content. This is largely different from a traditional journalistic role. In other words; of course 90% of their content will be at least tangentially related to maintaining good relationships with publishers, because that's just how trade press media works.

Its not advertising. Why any site would say NO to a developer coming over and giving them a demo of their new game (which they are gonna cover anyways) is beyond me. Should Giant Bomb stop asking developers to do so, and if the developer asks, should they decline?

That'd be one very fuckup up way of going about getting content for your site.

Huh? I'm totally for continuing to do it! And it makes sense as a feature, definitely. There's nothing wrong with being a corporate mouthpiece for half an hour if you show integrity in all other instances.

What I'm getting at is that it's a considerable amount of bandwidth they dedicate to these Quick Looks. If that's not tied to some sort of financially relevant agreement, I don't know why they do it in the first place. To be teh awesomez? Weird way of doing business then.

Sure, it drives traffic to their site, so that's part of the idea, obviously. But does one Quick Look EX's amount of new users (or whatever else GB is making money with) really balance the traffic costs? I don't know.

Quick Look Exs are pretty awesome who cares what their motivation is. It is a feature that is unique to their site and out of the 300 QLs they have done how many have been with devs? I can think of 3 Sabetour, Shadow Complex and Age of Booty.

And Bionic Commando.

QTE's in a soccer game? :|

edit: And the ball never goes out of bounds :lol
The Mario Strikers games did both of those, and those games were awesome. :\

Really? Seems bizarre to have a soccer game with no throw-ins or corner kicks, those are pretty integral parts of the sport.
Indoor Soccer has neither of those as well. It also has less players, a smaller field and games usually go over the 10 points score (one point for each goal).

And Brad’s already dead :lol

edit: I obviously have not been paying attention to NSMBW news because when Jeff said that the game will offer to play a level for you if you lose 8 lives on it, I did a double take.

hardcore platform junkies will be up in arms! outrage, they will mutter! Nintendo is bowing down to the casuals!

I know right... its like he's figured out thats what he's known for in the Quick Looks, and doesnt want to disappoint. :lol

You should see the first few minutes of this video, Jeff talks about how the site works and where it is going.

http://www.giantbomb.com/giant-bomb-pax-09-panel-part-03/17-1345/

Brief overview of the Quick Looks: First they wanted some content on their site which would drive traffic and thats where Quick Looks came in... because they didnt have enough time to do a thorough job on a lot of games, so they just went in blind, played a bit of the game, gave their first impressions and that was about it. This also allowed them to have a lot of content quickly without the need to edit/process too much.

four player mario bros is fucking chaos :lol

I don’t think I could deal with that. too frustrating. It does, however, seem like an awesome single player 2D Mario game

So good... SOOO good.

Jeff: This is the level with the secret exit... lets take it!!
Brad:I. just. want. to. kill. ALLLLL OF YOU AAGGHH!!!!

30 seconds later:
Ryan: Brad expressing nothing but hate for me.

5 seconds later:
Vinny: Fuck we're all dead!
Ryan: There's nothing I could do!! There's nothing I could do!!!
Brad: I could've made that jump. *wistful*

Quick Look EX is NEVER as good as a normal quick look. The people working on the game usually think they are far more entertaining than they are, and everybody seems much more restrained in mocking aspects they don't like, or having any sort of fun at all for that matter.

fuck. that NSMBW quicklook might have sold me on a Wii.

I just can’t justify the purchase, though :(

Brad (at the end): Eff you all.
:lol

:lol :lol

At about 27 minutes, you really hear terror in Brad's voice.

"Oh...oh boy...this is..."

He sounds exactly the same as somebody who is actually hanging off a cliff with bullets firing at him

The second coin battle world looks insane! :lol :lol

I wonder how nutty it gets toward the last stages of it!

Best quick look ever, I never laughed so much during one.

But the trade-off is that you have ELECTRIFIED WALLS THAT YOU CAN SLAM DUDES INTO AND WATCH THEM FRY AND SCREAM BLOODY MURDER. So awesome.

And the New Super Mario Bros. Wii Quick Look has completely sold me on that game. Oh man, my Christmas party is going to devolve into my friends and I attacking each other. :lol

This is exactly how I feel as well.

I got screwed on my DSi anyways, that shit wont charge in India even with a voltage adaptor. My PS3 works fine on the other hand. So if I do buy a Wii, I will get it in India.
