The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

It just occured to me they have hella activision plastic

cod night vision + t.hawk board + dj hero cat table edition + whatever guitar hero just came out + 3 360s + giant bomb + Friday afternoon = ????

I mean in theory you could ride, dj and guitar all at once, whilst wearing the nvgs.

3 way one man simultaneous endurance run? Is anyone at giantbomb man enough to endure?

Yeah, maybe if it were different Jeff would have constantly talked about it on the Bombcast, owned two copies of the game, bought the Renegade edition, and done a video review.

I was wondering what happened... the site was not viewing correctly a few minutes ago.

Much better this way :D . The flash box was basically useless except for the first headline...I'd always just scroll down anyways.
 
I'm glad Flash is gone, even though I kind of wish the arrow keys still scrolled the boxes.

Also, LittleBigPlanet PSP and Gyromancer Quick Looks are coming sometime this weekend, if not tonight. FUTURE!

They don't seem to do quick looks of Guitar Hero/Rock Band games. Never did one for Beatles, Guitar Hero 5, Lego Rock Band, ect.
 
Music games really don't make sense for Quick Looks. I think the only reason they did the whole split screen for Tony Hawk was because the control was so awful they had to make sure people saw that.

Have you ever tried multitasking with those games? Trying to hold a conversation while playing them is hard!!
 
Definitely like Giant Bomb's new site design. Loads up nice and quick and has a better display for new video content and such. I never really liked the "one box up and front with others that you need to scroll through to see" thing... kind of reminded me of how much I don't like the NXE interface on the 360.

I know, back in the THPS2 days, we would take turns playing the 2 player mode all day.
 
This is a really specific complaint about the new redesign, but I hate how they currently only have eight stories in the top nav thing, so that when you look around, everything is out of order. That's confusing and annoying. Add another story, guys. >:|
 
Yeah i just noticed the new site design. Its pretty good. Not much different, but i thought their original stuff was already really slick.
 
Is Brad really that bad at some of these games?

I almost wanted to claw my eyes out watching him bumble through Heroes of Newerth/League of Legends and now God of War...

Yeah Brad sucks at games, don't really know why he chose this profession. :lol I take his opinions as a grain of salt in reviews when it comes to gameplay.

All game journalists are bad at videogames. But it's fun watching Brad do quicklooks cause you're always waiting for his inevitable death.

Its funny because I remember on an old episode of Listen Up when Brad was a guest and Shane saying how Brad was a gaming god and he was really awesome at any game he played. I wonder if it was some sort of inside joke or if Brad getting killed in every quick look is just a gimmick that they ran with for comedy sake.
 
I think it’s funny how a subset of Gaf thinks you need elite gaming skills to be a games writer as opposed to, say, the ability to write. that kind of attitude is what leads to IGN levels of writing in the industry.

As long as Brad can get through the games he’s reviewing (even if it takes a bit longer than you super players) and can clearly express his views then that’s fine.

more than that, what bugs me is that there are times when they clearly don't even do any preparation before they start filming. Watching Brad alternate between dying and saying "Uh, I don't know where to go" and Ryan saying "hey 5 minutes in I gave up" (probably so he could go play some idiot rhythm game)

I love GB, I paid for the app, I watch every video, but seriously, play the section off screen and then reload the save, start filiming and maybe have some interesting things to say.
 
Quick Looks aren't meant to be like previews tough. I think the majority of the Giant Bomb viewers know that when they watch a QL it's usually a first taste of the game for the crew, too.

Personally, I dig how they do that. Get the content out there quickly for us to get a glimpse of it, then put down your precise thoughts later in the review.

I've never watched one and thought "shit, they're finding it hard to get in to, must be a crap game." It sucks if some people do that, but ultimately it's not Giant Bomb's fault.

nobody is asking for "elite gaming skills" and for Brad to be a "super player"


we're just laughing (at kinda cringing) at Brad having the gaming skills of an 112 year old woman who isn't quite sure what a "Fifty-O Game" is, or perhaps a clever time traveling caveman who just figured out that mash shiny round bumps on funny rock make little man move on lightning box

I don't think they have to be MLG level or anything, and I certainly don't think that writing skills are unimportant. But when they're so bad at a game that their opinions deviate from the majority of their audience, than it colors their reviews. The Wii control stuff in COD4 is a perfect example. They're simply not accustomed to the scheme, and so I throw out their opinions when control is concerned and I encourage people to actually TRY Wii controls for more than an hour and get used to them. Hell it took me playing like 3-4 console FPS games all the way through before I finally got comfortable with the dual-analog scheme.

see, I love it when they have no idea what’s coming up. some of the funniest QL moments are when they’re trying something out for the first time and are surprised by what they see.

I guess my expectations are different. I’m not expecting to get valuable insight into a game from a quicklook. that’s what reviews and, to a certain extent, the bombast is for. QL are just pure entertainment videos.

I like the unexpected moments too, and I'm not looking for "valuable insight" like an in-depth preview or anything. But at times they seem to know so little about the particular game or are bumbling around so much in some early tutorial level that it's honestly just boring to watch. Sometimes they completely miss parts of the game that would be fun to watch, or at least move the Quick Look along.

It hurts the pure entertainment.

They apparently even coined the term "Pulling a Brad" back in the old Gamespot days because he had a tendency to die often in live demos during On The Spot.

In Brad's defense he's expressed a modicum of performance anxiety during, for example, the PAX panel, where he basically clammed up and said very little. It's one thing to be playing a game in the comfort of your own space, but when the cameras turn on, things change. I certainly know that I'll be doing awesome at a particular videogame so I'll hook up my capture card and go "oh man I gotta record this" and the minute I fire the hardware up everything goes wrong. It's all because of that little extra 1% of "people are gonna see this" going through your head. It can throw your whole game off.
