The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

Y'know, the term "clone" gets thrown around a lot in regards to videogames, from Mario clones in ancient days to calling stuff Doom clones if they were FPSes and GTA clones if they were open world games. And generally it's not justified, as games can be similar in a lot of ways while still being really distinct.

But they even copied jamming on a button to open a treasure chest? What the hell?

But the game looks like it could have been done on the iPhone as easily as the PC. I'm sure it's a lot of fun for some but why stretch it out of it's just not there?

Also, Dante's Inferno QL is great, if a little flip.

Doesn't seem terrible... but considering its basically a straight rip from GOW, I doubt that'll cut it. At this point, I'd rather just pass on the demo download and stick in the GOW collection... hopefully the game has some pretty big unique mechanics otherwise its gonna be DOA.

I'll probably buy it. I like action games but rarely play then, I hate Japanese ones like Devil May Cry, they just really don't appeal to me, the setting, the characters, nothing. But this does I love the Hell setting and if it can really get that twisted dark feel it'll be great.
 
Dante's Inferno seems like it would be received a lot better if it wasn't based on the Divine Comedy. But then there's that little point of the game play being pretty derivative.
 
For some dumb reason “Air Natties” made me lol in the Dante QL.

The pixeljunk co-op shootout was hilarious. “Oh, fluid dynamics" good stuff. :lol

What's that got to with anything?
It was an unfair look, "it's 2D, it's not Team Fortress at all" what the hell, they barely covered the basics and ryan was already putting his foot down, hell not even two minutes over he was ready to wrap it up

The content didn't warrant a long video, that's all. Personally I rarely watch quick looks to learn the basics of games or how deep they get, I can go other places for that. I watch for the early impressions and entertainment factor.

I think they shit on it hard... which is rough when they went all out on Rogue Warrior of all things. I dunno, I think Dave should just do his weird PC stuff with Jeff. Everyone would be much happier.

are you suggesting they didn’t shit on Rogue Warrior?

Rogue Warrior was funny in an ironic way but Jeff was clear that the game controlled like shit and was no good. But it warranted a longer quicklook because of how ridiculous it was. Kinda similar to how Gaf had a 40 page thread going for Dudebro, y’know?

As for that other game, I am completely in agreement with the GB guys. it looked dull and uninteresting and I had no desire to see any more. what “hook” did that game have to warrant another 10 minutes?

I feel like I should respond to this... just because. :lol

It's an online shooter with custom maps and 10 classes. It's a combination of Soldat and Subspace, two of the more interesting 2D multiplayer shooters ever made. I mean, it doesn't use Unreal Engine 3 or Source, so maybe that's why it looks like an "iPhone game" or whatever, but there's enough depth and versatility in the game that I'm more than happy to go back to it when I want a lighter multiplayer experience without having to deal with the typical multiplayer angst (someone shoot down the fucking AC130 already!).

It's a PC game. Definitely. It's not for everyone, but I'm totally in love with it and there's nothing else like it that's out and "new".

I'm saying the policy they have against sports games should apply to these games as well. I mean, Dreamkiller and Majesty had longer QLs and you can argue their quality or whatever, but at least Jeff tried to feign a modicum of interest in those games. I could argue that Zombie Driver is about as "shallow" as Altitude, yet they devoted 10-15 minutes to it - because Jeff was the "host" of that episode.

They won't do QLs for Madden because they don't give a shit... if they don't care about PC games, they should just let Dave ride solo.
 
Dante's Inferno looks pretty good. If God of War were 5/5, Dante's Inferno looks like a 4/5 which is pretty decent.
Also :lol @ the "ew" moments, Saturday morning Nintendo cartoon and Brad nearly falling off the crumbling platform 3 times.

In his defense he was in the middle of a combo hot natty or an animation for 2 of those.

But you didn't have to jam on a button to open a chest in God of War (at least the collection/3 demo). You just hold it. They probably figured it would get annoying for every chest, something Visceral didn't decide.

You definitely jam on buttons to lift gates in God of War.

Such as? I highly doubt you've even played Altitude. It's a fantastic game.

I will never EVER watch a quicklook with headphones again. I almost fucking died of a heart attack when the first monster appeared :lol .

...except that you don't do that in GoW. You just hold a button (R2 in GoW I, R1 in GoW II & III) to open chests. So Visceral Games copied the general idea, but made it more annoying by requiring you to mash a button.
