Quick look, quick look, quick look. What does the word quick mean to you? These are not meant to be some elaborate in depth videos that show you all the intricate layers a game contains. They are quick looks of the product in question.

And the problem with that is that half the games they play aren't suited for quick looks of two or three guys making snarky comments at the opening half hour at all.

Whenever this gets brought up the GB Defense Force brings up "it's a quick look, not a review!" Yet at the same time, they also claim that it's supposed to be a more accurate look at the game because it's so candid and short. You see plenty of people on GB and GAF that DO take QLs as reviews and proclaiming that the video has quashed all their interest in the title. Just look at this page, FFS. And when it's a title like Yakuza or Strange Journey, which are great games that have no chance in hell of selling great, it's pretty annoying to see videos of two guys cracking jokes about how they have no idea what they're doing actually persuading people to not buy them.

Strange Journey looks about as dated as SMT2 :\

Why did they do the warping small-ass characters in dialog sequences? Why not do the standard animu face portrait thing?

to which I reply that it’s not their job to get us to want to buy a game and there’s no reason for them to feign excitement for something they find dull.

also, most of the folks turned off by the pace of, say, Yakuza or other slow games would probably not be interested in them anyway. The people who want Yakuza will play Yakuza regardless of the QL.

These guys know how to make the greatest games look bad. They already lost my internet-respect with their horrible quick look for PD (wouldn't be surprised if they're doing damage to business with this, haha) but it has not always been like that! They should at least know what they're playing or try to figure it out before recording. Strange.
I think Gerstmann is most at fault for this. He seems to start the game in the worst possible spot, nitpick unimportant things during the quick look, and spends an excessive amount of time in menus.

Whether or not they make the game look good or bad, Jeff really kills the entertainment value in a Quick Look, Vinny is the only one strong enough to counter his negativity.

I would say that Jeff still seemed interested in SMT: SJ, they were just laughing at some of the silly things that they saw. Most of us already know that RPGs aren't really highly regarded at Giant Bomb so even just the fact that Jeff was interested enough that he wanted to play more says a lot about the quality of the game.

Well, counter to that, there are people on the previous page of this thread saying the quick look has actually spurred more interest in the title. I don't really care one way or another, but the only value judgment that exists in quick looks is based on how people react to them, and that's something that is both out of their hands when they record them, nor is it something they should ever worry about.

I've also never heard of anyone at Giant Bomb going on record saying that quick looks are more accurate representations of what a game is like. The only thing I remember is them saying that the quick look idea was just something different they wanted to run with, simply because they don't have the man power to review every game in its entirety.

For better or worse quicklooks and giant bomb itself represent the unfiltered views and feelings of the staff, they like what they like and are not afraid of saying it and you gotta respect that except those times where their views are 100% wrong. Also Metro 2033 quick look incoming.

Gerstmann: Can't get the ball to go straight. Controller is inaccurate.

They do (you can see it in some of the videos like when Gore or Jimenez speaks) but not every character gets the portraits.

Wow, crying about quick looks now, never change gaf. Unbelievable.

I don't know why people get so hung up on this stuff. Quick Looks are just quick looks at the first 20 or 30 minutes of a game. Nothing more, nothing less. They have never been presented as a tool for consumers. They aren't meant to help you figure out if you want to buy or not. Unless you're a person who can tell 20 - 30 minutes in if a game is for you. If they add in snarky comments, that's just them being themselves. They're friends. They hang out and fuck around.

Metro 2033, C&C4 and Infinite Space QLs and something else this weekend I think :D

also fwiw i thought the Yakuza 3 and Strange Journey QLs just made me want to play them more.

Contrary to what most people have been stating in this thread, the Heart Gold QL actually made me more interested in the game.

Can we just stop complaining and talk about terry

i hope in like a years time they do a QL where they suddenly shout "WHERES TERRY? TERRY YOU HERE? IS TERRY OK? SOMEONE CHECK ON TERRY. HEY TERRY IM GOING OUT YOU WANT ANYTHING FROM THE STORE? TERRY?"

I don't really get the bitching. Quick Looks are honest. You either like what's being shown or don't. Their commentary is so completely unrelated to the game, it's absurd to get bent out of shape over it. Yea, they were bored of PD. That's because 4 player PD with classic weapons is boring as fuck. They still showed enough of the game where you could form your own impression about it as a whole though.

As far as Strange Journey... How can anyone be upset that they resort to MSTK'ing when it takes 30 fucking minutes for the first gameplay to show up. It totally deserves it. And it's not like what's shown isn't indicative of the game.

Wow, the framerate tanked when he started fighting.
Been playing the 360 version and the framerate has been rock solid. I'm quite impressed with the devs since its their first console game. Great lighting as well.

Well this quick look at least settles that I won't be picking up the 360 version of Metro 2033.
Awful looking framerate and texturing. A far cry from the amazing stuff I've seen in the PC threads. Love the atmosphere though. Seems straight up my alley.

I really need to build a gaming rig. :(

The only thing about quick looks that even remotely deserves moaning about is that they don't spend a couple of seconds looking at the controls in the manual before starting. It's kinda painful when a QL gets stuck at a certain point for a while because they don't know about a basic gameplay element.

Aside from that, if you don't like what you see then it's obviously not the game for you.

Oh, come on! Who RTFM:lol

Quick but not necessarily painful! ;D They still have a few minutes to fill and should try to not make it boring, imo. I like their concept but for some reason the videos lack some punch lately.

It's not their responsibility to make games look good.

That's what Quick Look EXes are for.

Not a quick look, but still this is probably the most appropriate thread this, its from an email square-enix just sent out:
