The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

the new weapons for Case West look pretty awesome. I think I should get Case Zero and then get this. I'll skip the proper DR2 :lol

edit: Wow, the extended segment at the end was pretty cool. Came outta no where :lol

I was a bit torn on the Case Zero quick look, since it was just Brad and Vinny aimlessly messing around, somehow being boring and interesting at the same time. I liked this Case West quick look; Brad mentioned some of CW's high points (No annoying companion-babysitting, Survivors only need to be saved instead of escorted), and of course, he showed off that neat Electric-lightsaber-zambi-explodin' gun. Plus, it was hilarious when they got fed up with the random co-op partner.
Ryan: "He's grabbing and making weapons, we need to boot him."
*Brad boots the player*
*The AI Frank spawns and drops the football bomb the player was making*
"OH NOOOO!!!"

That Case West QL confirms to me that they've completely abandoned everything that made Dead Rising interesting to me. Easy levels, 500 pointless things to shoot for points, no escort missions, boring third-person shooting.

Like Mass Effect 2, everyone likes it because it removes any identity the game might had in service of making it easier to shoot things. :lol

Brad seemed to love it on the podcast anyway.

I might skip this since I wanna play it. Vinny was praising it like crazy on the Bombcast.
Ditto, it sounded meh on paper but Vinny hyped me and Enslaved is in my top10 2010 so... gonna buy this.

Case West looks really bad to me. Boring locale, people hunting and shooting you almost constantly, much larger focus on shooting when the shooting in this game is bad, twice the price of Case Zero etc. It just seems like it does everything anyone likes about Dead Rising worse than before.

The only good thing about it as far as I can tell is that it's got Frank West in it. And the segway.

Maybe it's just more fun that way.

I don't get Brad's love for Enslaved. Will watch anyway.

I totally understand it.

Yeah, mechanics-wise it's not the greatest game, but the characterization is so good that I didn't care. I was driven to continue forward purely out of interest in seeing what happened to these characters.

Also, so many games have unnatural speeches or explanation, simply because the characters aren't emotive enough. They have to explain that they're angry, or sad, or ashamed, when a silent moment or a look would suffice in any movie. Enslaved is one of, if not the first game where the characters say as much with their faces as they do with words.

Also, Tripp is probably one of my favorite female characters ever. Attractive but not ridiculous looking, intelligent, ingenuitive, but not 'badass grrl power' type. She has character flaws, but they're understandable and not annoying.

No interest in the DLC though, cause I wasn't too fond of the Pigsy character.

I agree. Looks super lazy compared to even Case Zero. Zero had the unique and creative town setting and a great setup for Chuck Greene that gave a nice overview on what to expect of DR2. This is seemingly just a survival mode with dumb objectives and a loose connection to the narrative backbone. Poor setting, dumb missions(get to the switches!), and a very flimsy use of Frank West.

At least what was shown in the Quick Look, my interest has nosedived. Maybe it does get better?

I loved Case Zero to death and so far I haven't brought myself to beat Case West despite buying it the night it came out sight unseen.

It's far more linear and simplistic. Like they tried to make it a more standard action game about Zombies instead of the weird quasi-survival open world horror game it was. It feels like there's a much greater pressure to push you forward to the next objective rather than solve any kind of mystery or explore - even during moments where you have tons of time until the next case opens.

On top of that, the game is permanently stuck in that moment you get in a Dead Rising game where there's just too much shit going on. Not in terms of mission objectives, but just how much is on screen, what type of stuff is attacking you, and so on. The signal-to-noise ratio dial cranks almost all the way to noise and before you know it you've taken so much incidental chip damage (most of it unavoidable) over the course of ten minutes or so that you're dead without even realizing it.

The pairing of Frank West and Chuck Greene is great. The writers really took advantage of having those two characters together for some awesome moments where they're quipping with each other.

But gameplay-wise, there's not a lot in Case West that feels like what I want out of a Dead Rising game. Part of it almost feels like a response to what some say are the "bad parts" of a Dead Rising game - the item management, survivor escorting, leveling up, and so on. Here, you start out with a bunch of health, plenty of item slots, a bunch of moves and you only get even more power as you keep playing. The lack of rescuing survivors, too. It's sort of weird that they just kind of go "Oh. Well I guess I better go somewhere safe now." and walk away once you rescue them.

It just doesn't feel like Dead Rising.

Surprised that they still haven't done a Bad Company 2 Vietnam quicklook.

anyway, Raskulls should be interesting. :lol

I'm not. Ryan said no one of them is playing the game. That's also why they didn't play Vietnam it on TNT so far

Weren't they on vacation when Vietnam came out? Kind of hard to do a TNT that way.

Ryan was taking suggestions for TNT this week on Twitter. The no one is playing it response was to the Vietnam suggestion.

Vietnam would be cool but I would love them to see some indies, ZP2KX:Zombies & Pterodactyls! would be awesome and only 80points to join there game.

Ryan confirmed on Twitter that TNT will be random shit again. I don't think they wanna play any BC2/Vietnam at all.

Surprised by how awesome Raskulls actually looks. Mr. Driller and good humor. Might pick that one up.

I loved the PSN/XBLA TNT (acronym hell). It might make it difficult for people wanting to participate but as a viewing experience it's much more interesting to have a variety of stuff to watch instead of a game I might not be interested in at all.

Edit: I love their TNT banners.

Problem with that is that I know for a fact they won't be playing on anything I own. (I'm a PC, Wii, DS man.)
