Um, excuse me? Who the fuck do you think you are? Ayn Rand? Gordon Gekko? Who?Foliorum Viridum said:Yup. I do like the Happy Hours, but I'm mainly subscribing to keep the QLs/Bombcasts going.
Although I understand why people will find it hard to accept them charging for those features, unless they do start providing some more member only content, I do see their numbers dropping and them being forced into charging for those things.
In an ideal world they'd charge for all video/audio content on the site, and then part of that funding would go towards even more new, exclusive member content.
Basically the mentality of people on the internet needs to change. If GAF went paid only tomorrow I'd sign up. If Facebook had a yearly subscription I'd probably go for that too. Giant Bomb is up there with those sites for me so I'd be happy to pay for all of their content. People need to get over the fact that free content can become restricted to paid members. That's the reality of business and if you like something enough, pay for it.
I don't see how WM will last unless they start doing this or get a lot of advertising.

You ever think the Giant Bomb guys might be doing this for something other than filthy lucre, kid? Like, y'know, the love of the job? Sure, getting paid for doing something you love is a dream job for everyone, and there's no doubt that the GB crew do enjoy their work, and long may it continue.
But to suggest that WM should suddenly start charging for all their video and podcast content, thereby closing themselves off to the section of the audience that can't/won't pay for previously free stuff, just because you think it's "ideal"? Because you think that current viewers are too "entitled" (just a right-wing buzzword for "getting stuff you think they shouldn't be")? I could say a few things about my personal opinion of that kind of thinking, but the mods would ban me for abuse.
Put it this way: not everything in life is about money, kid. Besides, it could be said that the Quick Looks and podcasts you'd want to charge for (like the good little capitalist you are) are the "gateway drug" that make viewers want to pay for the heavier stuff - a perfectly valid business strategy, no matter what William Sessions might have told you.
WM will be fine, Gods willing. Even if they do fold, the guys will just find employment elsewhere. So stop worrying, kid, you'll give yourself an aneurysm.

I'd have called him "boy", but I'm not from the Southern United States. I am from Liverpool, though, so maybe I should have called him "La" instead.drizzle said:Who are you? The narrator from Bastion? Goodness gracious.

I got around to the Moon Diver QL today, wasn't my thing. Didn't hold my attention either.

Same. This has led me to realize that locking away quick looks wouldn't get me to subscribe.GavinGT said:None of last week's QLs really held my attention....
People really expect too much from web ads. There's really not that much money in it. Simply putting up Google Ads usually just tends to annoy people, and rarely actually brings in a ton of cash. Devalues the site sometimes. I can understand why they prefer keeping those away.big_z said:can you change your username after joining or are you stuck with what you pick?
if giantbomb is really in need of money they should use ads for non paying members and trim staff/webpages(anime and movie sites could be dropped). their staff count has gotten bloated incredibly fast.
Also, during one of the Happy Hours a while back they said they were making profit right now. So, really: the business-model they have right now is working out fine for them.![]()
I <3 Mondays has been way off schedule for like, a month+ straight now. It'll just randomly appear at odd times, sometimes even on Tuesday.Dizzy-4U said:A quick look before I love Mondays? What is this???!??!
They talked about on the podcast once that they sometimes didn't even want to do I <3 Mondays. I'm just glad QOTW is goneDaBuddaDa said:I <3 Mondays has been way off schedule for like, a month+ straight now. It'll just randomly appear at odd times, sometimes even on Tuesday.

by staff i meant mainly the behind the scenes guys. the last time they did an office tour, which was a while ago, they had a lot more engineering staff than editors. maybe some were on contract but it was overkill for the size of whiskey media.
