I will gladly pay once they makes it possible to stream everything in HD in xbmc. Since I'm watching everything in xbmc I wouldn't get anything extra by paying right now.

Yup. I do like the Happy Hours, but I'm mainly subscribing to keep the QLs/Bombcasts going.

Although I understand why people will find it hard to accept them charging for those features, unless they do start providing some more member only content, I do see their numbers dropping and them being forced into charging for those things.

In an ideal world they'd charge for all video/audio content on the site, and then part of that funding would go towards even more new, exclusive member content.

Basically the mentality of people on the internet needs to change. If GAF went paid only tomorrow I'd sign up. If Facebook had a yearly subscription I'd probably go for that too. Giant Bomb is up there with those sites for me so I'd be happy to pay for all of their content. People need to get over the fact that free content can become restricted to paid members. That's the reality of business and if you like something enough, pay for it.

I don't see how WM will last unless they start doing this or get a lot of advertising.
Um, excuse me? Who the fuck do you think you are? Ayn Rand? Gordon Gekko? Who?

You ever think the Giant Bomb guys might be doing this for something other than filthy lucre, kid? Like, y'know, the love of the job? Sure, getting paid for doing something you love is a dream job for everyone, and there's no doubt that the GB crew do enjoy their work, and long may it continue.

But to suggest that WM should suddenly start charging for all their video and podcast content, thereby closing themselves off to the section of the audience that can't/won't pay for previously free stuff, just because you think it's "ideal"? Because you think that current viewers are too "entitled" (just a right-wing buzzword for "getting stuff you think they shouldn't be")? I could say a few things about my personal opinion of that kind of thinking, but the mods would ban me for abuse.

Put it this way: not everything in life is about money, kid. Besides, it could be said that the Quick Looks and podcasts you'd want to charge for (like the good little capitalist you are) are the "gateway drug" that make viewers want to pay for the heavier stuff - a perfectly valid business strategy, no matter what William Sessions might have told you.

WM will be fine, Gods willing. Even if they do fold, the guys will just find employment elsewhere. So stop worrying, kid, you'll give yourself an aneurysm.

Yes, I mad. I tried to subscribe, but these goons don't take Paypal. Their fault if they go under.

Who are you? The narrator from Bastion? Goodness gracious.

They have paypal since last Friday. If you really mean what you said, you really should put your money down where your mouth is.

Edit: Good to know you're signing up. That's all that matters. :D

:lol

And then The Kid took a quick pause and told of how he felt GB should charge for everything, prompting an angry rant from an onlooker. The Kid didn't pay him no mind, he just went back to runnin.

I'd have called him "boy", but I'm not from the Southern United States. I am from Liverpool, though, so maybe I should have called him "La" instead. :p

And yeah, it's only £31. Even I can afford that
once a year
.

You know what would be a cool paid features? Better video playlists.

Such a pain to watch old ER. Or just put up a batch download so I can get them all at once

Judging by this post I'm not the one on the way to an aneurysm ;)

This thread turned to shit because of this debate again? Fucks sake, they just put out a ton of quick looks this week and this is all that is discussed.

I got around to the Moon Diver QL today, wasn't my thing. Didn't hold my attention either.

None of last week's QLs really held my attention....

My opinion on the subscriber stuff:

I'm fine with the guys offering what they offer for free. That's good. I do feel like higher resolution video and three hours of exclusive content a month isn't quite enough to justify a subscription. And yeah, I know it's sort of about "supporting what they're doing", and that's why I subscribed last year, but it's kind of hard to feel like doing that when GB's coverage of the platforms I actually care about (PC, Wii, DS/3DS) is... not that great.

can you change your username after joining or are you stuck with what you pick?

if giantbomb is really in need of money they should use ads for non paying members and trim staff/webpages(anime and movie sites could be dropped). their staff count has gotten bloated incredibly fast.

People really expect too much from web ads. There's really not that much money in it. Simply putting up Google Ads usually just tends to annoy people, and rarely actually brings in a ton of cash. Devalues the site sometimes. I can understand why they prefer keeping those away.

Also, right now their movie site is run by two guys, with a few freelancers contributing. The anime site actually has no staff at all, and is run entirely by the community. Those sites ain't going anywhere; in fact, I think they plan on introducing (a number of) new sites this year. Setting up a site for them is relatively cheap: they can have about two people contributing to it full-time, and get the community to contribute the rest. They can open up a new site real easily too with their wiki-technology, so the investment for a new 'brand' is (relatively) really, really small.

Also, during one of the Happy Hours a while back they said they were making profit right now. So, really: the business-model they have right now is working out fine for them. :P

i just figured they were hard on cash since gaf is bitching about it again. i dont understand why people bring up non existent issues.

by staff i meant mainly the behind the scenes guys. the last time they did an office tour, which was a while ago, they had a lot more engineering staff than editors. maybe some were on contract but it was overkill for the size of whiskey media.

A quick look before I love Mondays? What is this???!??!
I <3 Mondays has been way off schedule for like, a month+ straight now. It'll just randomly appear at odd times, sometimes even on Tuesday.

They talked about on the podcast once that they sometimes didn't even want to do I <3 Mondays. I'm just glad QOTW is gone

I think the Theatre thing does something like that. Although when I tried to use it it only worked in Chrome so I never spent much time with it.

Never understood the point of the Monday vids. Half the time the content discussed within never arrives, and the QoTW stuff was terrible. They should just focus on the content itself, not the weekly schedule.

During the Happy Hour their business guy Mike Tatum actually said they have yet to make a profit since starting the company. It's part of the long term business plan to build an audience, but they have not made any money yet.

looks so bad ass... An Ikaruga platformer. I havn't seen a coop platformer that looks like that much fun since 'splosion. Most likely day 1 if the demo holds up!
