The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

Fuck, this shit with their videos is just getting worse. Anyone had a problem in the past when watching videos on GiantBomb.com where the video would cut off randomly, with the "Duder, it's over" message?

It's happened to me almost every day, on multiple machines (different OS, both on Firefox however) for a while now, and when it happens I could just hit refresh, go to the time stamp I was on when the video quit, and it would continue just fine. Now though since their site automatically brings up another video page when one is finished, i have to hit Back and try to find my place in the video again.

Trying to watch the FEAR 3 quick look and this has happened now about 8 times. All at different spots of the video.

Although Ryan seemed really down on it, I thought it looked totally competent. Fear 2 was crap.

Anyone know if there is any public demo coming? Did a quick google but nothing either way.

What. Fear 2 was great.

I was kinda let down by this. I think it was because we didn't really see a whole lotta creepiness. The shooting at least looked fine.

Are you using a wireless internet connection? You might be dropping the signal, which would cause the stream to stop. Try clicking on the "Progressive" option button before you start the video and see if that helps.

Also, there is a button to the right of the video window that says "Auto" that you can click to turn off auto play.

People worry too much about game journalist opinions. None of them are any more qualified to judge games than anybody on GAF.
I have not seen the game in motion yet and quicklooks give a good indication as always.

The two machines are in different zip codes (work / home) but I'm hard wired on both. Not really sure what's causing the connection to be lost. Thanks for pointing out the Auto option, I'll definitely disable that.

Hmmm. Does minibomb no longer work?
This has been bumming me out, I haven't been able to watch the videos for the last couple of days (I stream them to my phone at work during lunch) because the video pages are completely blank for some reason on minibomb - like the RSS is screwed up. Not sure if the GB home page is very mobile friendly but I may have to try that if the videos play in flash on Android.

Giantbomb.com has had HTML5 videos for ages. No need for mini bomb.

There mobile site is very good but you need to subscribe.

Indeed quicklooks give a decent look at a game, not the gamemechanics or anything like that per se. Also if anyone really is curious about how the game looks in motion they might aswell mute the crew because, I get the sense, that they more often than not just bitch about it/play it horrendously/mock and/or make fun of the game in question.

Entertaining ? Yes.
Informative ? Somewhat.

The GB site is ok to browse on a phone, not ideal but you can get around. The mobile site is subscriber only but personally I think it's kinda crappy.

Yeah but minibomb is much nicer to navigate on a phone, as I said even GBs mobile site is a bit rubbish.

Yeah, this has been happening to me on occasion. I think it's less prone to occur when you use the "streaming" option.

Quicklook format doesn't work for F.3.A.R. 3 Three. The first level is the worst level of the game, the rest of it is much better, it's best played co-op, and the other multiplayer modes are shockingly well done. Fucking Run is just as much fun as it sounds.

Agreed, it also didn't help that they were on the easiest difficulty. The gunfights are at their best when you are getting flanked and have the opportunity to come up with tactical solutions to the shootout.

He said it wasn't the first level. And it's hardly the format's fault if the game starts weak.

It's indisputably an inaccurate portrayal of what the full game is like and will not reflect the experiences of the majority of people who decide to purchase the game. Take that however you want.

Yup, annoying as hell, but none of us are able to duplicate it. From talking to the engineers, this sounds like it's an issue with Amazon, which hosts the videos, and specific IPs/regions are getting routed to distant, high-ping servers by mistake. We need specific information from people that are experiencing this issue so we can forward it off to Amazon's team and get it fixed. There'll be a post on the site this week that specifies what that information is, hopefully you can give us a hand.

It happens to me with all your longer videos like TNT constantly and to some extent, your Happy Hours. I watch in HD streaming mode. REALLY annoying.

Not to keep piling on and beating a dead horse but also atmospheric games like fear, amnesia, dead space etc are as badly portrayed as they can get in a format where there's two or more guys talking and cracking jokes all the time. Again for most people it's entertaining but in the name of the game it really doesn't do them justice. This is with regards to people basing their purchase decisions on quick looks.

Is it the first level of the game or not? You said past the first level the game was much better, they said this isn't the first level, so therefore this is the 'much better' you were talking about no?

Isn't that what most co-op experiences are like though? All that fear and trepidation doesn't exist when you're playing along with someone.

Perhaps I should have said "the very early parts of the single player portion," to be more clear.

Just seemed like a pointless post.

Quick looks don't represent a game's full experience and the sky is blue. More at 11.
If you don't have anything to contribute or discuss then, then don't just post to be an ass.

I wasn't sure if you'd seen the QL yourself or just thought it was from the first level for another reason, or if Ryan was confused.

It's a quick look. It's not meant to be a purchasing guide. If you watch it and it still interests you then get it. While Ryan didn't seem too keen on it I still saw a lot of decent things going on, like nice visuals and decent ai. If you're worried that some people are not going to buy this game due to the quick look then you're wasting your time: they weren't going to buy it anyhow

True true, I didn't watch the whole quicklook so I missed the second half where they played co op, and you are right just like re5 every little bit of tension is thrown out the window in co op.

BUT that doesn't negate my point with regards to the singleplayer part, of which a big part of the QL is dedicated to.

I agree, yet there are people, one of them in this very thread who explicitly had his purchase depending on the "outcome" of the quicklook.

I'm not worried about anything you're talking about. I am simply stating the quicklook is not indicative of the majority of the game and isn't a very good portrayal. That's it, nothing else. If you don't care, then you can ignore the post. Not everyone watches quicklooks for the exact same reasons as you might.

The last thing a GB thread needs are more "quicklooks are supposed to be subjective!" versus "quicklooks are supposed to show off what a game is really like!" arguments that have been had a thousand times before. That is not my intent.

One thing about the QL I wanted to mention was that's my favorite version of split screen, Ryan didn't seem keen, but I hate it when you get some crazy wide or tall aspect ratio, it's really uncomfortable for me.

Agreed, though it seems to me like this game is making the co-op its big thing. Whether that's a good or bad thing for the series I don't know.

i honestly don't think I could get into the "creepyness" of a game where the badguys were all shouting they way they do in Fthreear.
The grunts were the scariest part of Fear. It was probably just brilliant scripting and level design, but they were too clever by half.

This might have been said already but I'm still going to say it. I love me some Ryan Davis but holy hell did he get lost a lot during that quick look or what? There were a so many times when I wanted to yell "go down those stairs!" or "only the silver doors can be opened!" But these things happen and I still love Ryan Davis.

I don't mean to sound like an ass, but the limitations of the quick look format have been discussed ad nauseam. Bit of a dead end at this point.

The lineage of FEAR is so weird with this new game. For me, the first game was about these cool, unique cinematic moments that came about as a result of the great A.I., but the game as a whole never did much for me. There were less of those natural moments in the sequel, but I had much more fun with it just going through the crazy campaign. I'm certainly interested in Thfffrrrrreaaaarr even still.

Haha, yeah. Normally I'm oblivious to that stuff in Quick Looks but this one was particularly bad. I was going nuts watching them try and open non-functional doors constantly. From what I saw it looks very linear but not, it's weird. I haven't played any of the previous Fears, though.

Funny thing about the F3AR QL, they played for almost an hour and would've gone on longer if Vinny's controller battery hadn't crapped out. Pretty good for a supposedly "meh" game.

I bet Ryan's going to give it 4 stars in the end.

I'd put money on 3 stars.

I agree. I care less and less what journalists think.

I make my own decision and enjoy reading the collective thoughts here. These days I only really pay a passing interest in review scores, and only really care about Edge.
