No not Arthur Gies. He already ruined what would otherwise be my favorite podcast, and now he's back to ruin my favorite video series. Please just stay at joystick where i can easily ignore you. I'm not the type of person to dismiss everyone but the original four, but I draw the line at Arthur. Please anyone but him.

Edit: I guess I should explain why I don't like the guy. My biggest complaint against him was more of a podcast problem where he'd have to get his opinion across on every single last thing even if he has nothing to add to it. Don't like adventure games or platformers and someone is talking positively about an adventure game or platformer? Then lets turn the topic around into why I hate adventure games or platformers or japanese games in general.

He was also the most biased journalist I've ever had to listen to since Shane Bettenhousen, except with bettenhousen it was bearable because he almost always took his fandom in a positive light.

The classic example was the Rebel FM episode where Matt Chandronait claimed that non-gamers would sit and watch Uncharted 2 being played like it was a movie. Arthur of course violently disagreed, and not even Matt explaining that he himself had played thru Uncharted 2 while his non-gaming roommates sat and watched was enough to change Arthur’s mind. That attitude, combined with his frequent use of the term "vaginal companion" to refer to women (while at the same time scolding anyone who dared used the dreaded "r-word") was enough to get me to stop listening, even though I've been a big fan of Anthony Gallegos since his GFW days. I just made do with listening to him on the GameSpy Debriefings until it ended earlier this year.

As hard as it might be for you to understand, people like Arthur. Including the GB guys. For whatever reason he had the game (I assume something to do with Joystiq) and he offered to take it GB guys, to which Ryan said yes but only if he did a Quick Look of it with him.

I know this is the internet/NeoGAF and all but fucking hell some of you people are jerks. Not everyone likes everyone else, that's fine but try and be civil about it at least.

I'd say the people who like him are in the minority. He's terrible for many reasons. I stopped going to Joystiq when he went there and it would be a real shame if he became anything remotely like a semi-regular guest on Giant Bomb. But I guess it's good news if, as you say, this was just a one off because he had the game to give to the GB guys.

Yeah, them constantly saying "r-word.org" instead of "retarded" is fucking retarded. Say the word or don't say it at all, trying to cover it up or roll it back is just silly.

A few other podcasts have been censoring themselves over this word and it's so silly. I will not go into some debate over it but if they can curse then worrying about the word "retard" is the least of their problems.

I heard about that. He's ridiculous. You just know it would've been just like watching a movie if it had been on the 360, though.

Hey, if you ask stupid questions!

But yeah, Arthur did slowly ruin RebelFM. There were countless good discussions that could have taken place if he wasn't on it. That's why I want him to stay away from Giant Bomb - I do think he's an utter tool but it's the fact he'll surely derail good discussions that is the most worrying thing.

Thankfully, I think this is a one-off.

so the first two kinect QLS I tried to watch were Kinectimals and Seseme street. I couldn’t finish them. not even the GB crew can make me sit through little children’s games like this. everything is so sickeningly sweet.

and, seriously, a talking fox with butterfly wings is just too damn weird

Sesame Street and Kinectimals w/ Bears look really good for kids.

It's great that high quality games are being made for children, much better than the usual shovelware.

From the episodes of RebelFM I've listened to, it's also the other guys' fault. They appear to be meek in his presence, never challenging him, simply agreeing with his point and moving on.

I stopped listening to it because of his comments against the NGΣ2 demo. If I remember correctly he went off on some huge rant about how he couldn't figure out how to damage the added boss in the demo and how it was terrible, when literally all you had to do was attack any part of the body you can reach, which is the two arms initially. A lot of GAF at the time had venom soaked canines for that game before even playing it, and it just pissed me off.

Take a listen to his views on Vanquish. It'll blow your mind.

Vanquish the best third person shooter ever made and essentially faultless? I can only imagine his views are both grounded and agreeable.

Hah... I was just about to post that StuBurns was lucky he wasn't still listening when Vanquish came out.

And to reflect a different opinion, Arthur Gies tweeted :

"since the embargo is up, i don't have much good to say about vanquish. it's repetitive, clunky, and irritatingly punitive. very japanese."

He also claimed that the guns don't aim well, the shooting doesn't feel good, Vanquish does not have good mechanics, the reviews heavily emphasize the style of Vanquish over the substance, and that Vanquish is way overrated because the Godhand/Clover Studio aficionados in the press all forced their editors to let them review the game.

While Arthur may not be the best fit for a Quicklook, he is a strong writer who has been transparent in his method and review process. I also like how his art school background has informed his perspective - something that is leaned on in his Deus Ex review. While I may not agree with a lot that he says, I can't fault him for having an unpopular opinion. He's no Shawn Elliott, but it sure seems Arthur uses Shawn as a model for how to uncompromising and critical in the games press.

Now back on track: dem bears are so goddamn cute.

Defies belief. How this man earns a living in the games press is beyond me.

Vanquish was perfect? I recall not liking some of the decisions for melee and the UI was god awful, still a great game, but not flawless.

I don't agree with Gies on things, but w/e. I do enjoy how pretty much every new pc game runs like garbage for him due to some amd problem or something lol.

I'm not even sure what "Japanese" tropes Vanquish is "guilty" of. There's stylized action? Well fuck. The military political drama is sillier than silly Western military political drama? Damn. It constantly acknowledges that it's a video game that you play for fun instead of pretending to be an Entertainment Experience? Crucify that summbitch.

It's a third person cover based shooter with assault rifles, shotguns, limited inventory slots, regenerating health, and a grenade button. But it has a melee system and the character's white Master Chief suit can boost so "painfully Japanese" I guess.

360 version of Wipeout 2 is region locked FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU :@:@
wanted to buy it from vgp.ca but no use now :( NO eu release on the horizon so :(
Why would you buy this game??

Surprised everyone is flipping out about a tweet for why back when on thread about Quicklooks due to a guy showing up in a kinect QL.

Seriously though, I wonder if the wipeout tv show guys will eventually sue and win against sony for the license >.>"

But, I can't lie, these QL are hell more interesting than 'actual' wipeout footage ;P

I think there are very obvious Japanese tropes and design choices that you don't see in Western games, but this isn't really the thread for it.

I never said it was *bad*, I just don't like a lot of things about Japanese game development these days unless you're Nintendo or making Dark/Demon's Souls :D

It is weird, he talks about how many issues he has with newer PC games on his 'SUPER AMD PC'. I'm running a 4890 from years ago and never run into as many quirks as he does.

You stopped going to Joystiq because of occasional stories posted by Arthur that you don't have to read? That's dumb as fuck.

I'm not going to get into this. I agree with some people's problems with Arthur but I like him, he's a pretty open guy and I appreciate that. That's the last I'll say on it.

I don't see what's so shocking about that. Lots of people don't like Western games. There was a thread the other day about Eastern European games and lots of people said they didn't like the design choices etc in them.

Personal preference OMG.

Justin McElroy, Ludwig Kietzmann, and , most importantly, Jeremy fucking Parish would be awesome additions to the GB crew. If JP joined, we'd actually get great JRPG reviews, and I think he'd blend well with the GB guys, especially Dave, Drew, and Vinny.
Fuuuuuuuuuck no. I'd take Gies over both of them, and I'm not a huge fan of his.
