I love that Ryan pretends he doesn't care about DBZ, but seems to know an awful lot.

I know a lot about that universe, but couldn't care less about the games. I see no inconsistency (he read the manga and saw the show, I think).

Pretty much the same. I've read the mangas several times each but I've only seen a handful of episodes. They're pretty much awful compared to the mangas IMO, which goes for the games too.

The first few volumes (up to 6 or 7 I think) still hold up.

All the Dragon Ball era stuff from the comic is great, and like Z era before the android saga. It begins its decline in quality from the android saga on. Same for the animated series.

GT doesn't exist in the comics so it doesn't count for me.

To truly deride something, you should have a pretty good knowledge of it.

I don't think Ryan hates Dragonball, at the very least he thought Budokai 3 was great.

He also used to have a video up on his Youtube channel (which seems to be closed, now) showing that he went out of his way to meet Chris Sabat at some con or game media event or something of that sort.

Sabat, of course, being the voice of Vegeta.

Even though I think it's bad now, I was a huge DBZ fan in my early high school years and I remember a lot of the things I knew about the series then. I imagine Ryan is in a similar situation. That series is so absurd it's pretty hard to forget.

The part in the Quick Look with Goku and Vegeta doing synchronized spins was pretty great. Vinny and Ryan need to never stop doing DBZ QLs. Bad games, but great riffing material.

Ultimate Tenkaichi looks super simplified from the first Tenkaichi. I agree that the first few had really complex controls (I remember the tutorial for 1 took like an hour) but once you learned it all, they were really fun. This just looks like a bunch of guessing games. Visually it looks great though.

Budokai 3 will always be my favorite though, although I haven't played any since Tenkaichi 2.

Budokai 3 WAS great, I was never a fan of the Tenkaichi games. I think they made one in a more budokai style but it had the same downfall most of these DBZ games start with, only going to the end of the frieza saga until the next game. GIVE ME BUDOKAI 4!

You should watch the quick look for Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo. Ryan is an obvious closet DB fan.
Everyone Ryans age is a closeted Dragon Ball fan. We watched it on toonami in high school and college and was fucking fantastic

Game looks so much simpiler and "mashy" compared to the last DBZ game I played on the PS2

The QL made me nostalgic for some DBZ. Maybe I should check the rerelease out

I used to record it on my VCR. I didn't realize how big of a dork I was until now. When I think back to the show, I remember entire episodes of guys just powering up but I was still hooked.

I've never been a fan of anime, now or then, yet I can say I've seen all of DBZ and Gundam Wing because of cartoon network.

Huh. Now Ryan reviewed HOTD and the one of the first things he mentioned was the "swimmy lag" on the Wii version. And he's on Twitter saying that the Wii version had "repugnant input lag."

...So I slapped in my copy and played through the train level. No "terrible swimmy" lag, jus like I remembered. There's a bit of acceleration on there to presumably smooth your cursor a bit, but it's not lagging at all.

This is Budokai 4:

It was the final DBZ game Dimps made (not counting Evolution as that was supposed to be out prior to this), and was trashed on in reviews due to its difficulty, and honestly, just for existing. Complaints included, "Why wasn't Burst Limit this game?", "Why isn't there an online mode?" (because budget release PS2 games released in 2008 usually have online modes), etc. Fan reaction was a tonne more positive.

If anything, maybe he is mistaking input lag as the frame rate drops the Wii version had. If I remember correctly it had some pretty noticeable drops at times and maybe he is misremembering that as input lag.

Huh, I never even heard of that!

I'm not sure he understood what content was new, going by the Quick Look either. The review alludes to the new content being locked away, but the Director's Cut was in the original Wii version, and the new levels are interspersed into the standard campaign. The second level, the strip club, is brand new.

I don't think anyone is going to call him out about it on Twitter and then make a GAF thread about it though.

Same. Damn. Wonder if there's anywhere that still has a copy. I loved the Budokai games. Wasn't as much of a fan of the Tenkaichi ones hough I did get 3 on the Wii.

We are talking about Ryan in here. You will probably get blocked on Twitter.

Eh if he's putting it into reviews it is kind of shitty. If he's wrong he should address it. If it was just in a podcast or QL it would be fine but like Jeff has said, this is advice on whether or not to buy a game and it should be accurate.

The input lag isn't in the PS3 version, which he's reviewing, but in the Wii version. He's saying in fact that the lag isn't there in the PS3 version. People are saying that the Wii version didn't have lag either. Edit: and for what it's worth, GB did not review the Wii version.

I picked this up since it was so cheap at the time, since I hate the Tenkaichi series and the fact that you got Kid Goku from GT and Janemba. But I just couldn't get into it, didn't like any of the changes for controls compared to Budokai 3. For me, Budokai 3 had the best story mode and fighting system.

Yeah, Patrick trying to grasp at reasons to dog on the Wii version seemed really confusing to me. Motion+ is for detecting how the remote is tilted in 3D space. It has no effect on pointer aiming.

I think they do use motion controls to track the way the pointer moves, together with the camera data (much the way the Move uses the glowy bulb + accelerometers + gyros + compass for tracking). None of these techs are 'real' pointers, like light guns used to be. Remember, the Wii doesn't really know exactly where the sensor bar is in relation to your TV. In my experience with my Wii, unless you calibrate it otherwise, where your pointer shows up isn't exactly where the Wiimote is pointing.

Ryan-Davies-showing-his-incompetency shocker.

Whatever next? He's such a weak link at Giantbomb.

I do want HotD on ps3. Will have to resist the temptation tomorrow.
