The new Sonic game is another example of designing games for idiots. It wasn't enough that Robotnik was jumping sky high and his ass was glowing. Nooooo the Chao basically had to explain the whole tactic for the boss battle. I was able to figure shit like this out within minutes when I was six years old what is wrong with people today?

The rings/health mechanic since the first Sonic is a classic example of "designing games for idiots".

Alright, not the same exact thing. I am being an ass, but w/e.

I don't get why I have to turn shit like that off, instead of on. Makes no sense to me.

Developers go as far as make challenging difficulties unlockable after beating the whole game. Why? I can only guess because they are afraid someone clueless will pick something too hard by accident and be turned off by it.

This is a perfect example of what Egoraptor was talking about in his MegamanX video

I think you can turn the hint system off, but yeah a lot of people, especially reviewers are complete idiots.
Read a few of Colors & Unleashed reviews. Dying from jumping in a bottomless pit is bad game design & apparently good game design is where there is no penalty for messing up in a platforming game.
That was literally the review of a huge chunk of reviews.

Literally, before you even start playing the game, it asks you if you want to turn hints on or off. It's not like it's on by default and you have to navigate through menus to turn it off.

Because this is Sonic. The target audience is kids.

Oh, that's good. That's how I like it.

If the difficulty is anything to go on, the target audience is the 20+ something audience who played Genesis & SNES games.

The demeaning tutorial crap is more for those shitty reviewers who complained about the difficulty.

First thing I did in Sonic Generations was go into the options and switch the chao off. It annoyed me to no end from what I played of the demo. No way could I last with him on in the full game.

Anyway, generations is fun so far. Gonna watch the QL later. So far I'm liking it more than colours but I think that is because I can play this one on my PC and it looks and sounds god damn amazing.

Jesus, just watching the Goldeneye reloaded quicklook.

Can Ryan and Jeff go through a game featuring English voice actors without mentioning the fact that they are in fact English.

"Cheers mate!"
"Shouldn't it be lorry!?"

Ugh...

Calm down and have a cup of tea.

You may or may not be surprised at the average age of people who buy Sonic games nowadays.
Hint: It's young.

Kids buy Sonic games because they like Sonic (I worked with kids for 7 years at my previous job, tons of kids love Sonic), they don't care if it features "classic" Sonic or if there's references that they won't get. They will buy the game regardless, so they are the most dependable demographic for Sega.

What the hell was Ryan laughing at during the end of the Sonic Quick Look? I could make out the beginning of it.

I believe they were laughing about Dr. Sanjay Gupta, although were calling him Sanjay Gouda: The Cheese Doctor.

I guess there was more to the conversation that was not recorded

Classic Sonic levels looked incredible. Framerate drops in some parts were unfortunate, but still. Those elements definitely look like the best Sonic platformer stuff in years.

Modern Sonic is meh as usual. I'd buy the shit out of a PC version of just Classic Sonic levels. With modern Sonic this is a maybe when it's cheaper sort of deal.

you can turn it off.
Yeah, I was about to complain about that due to having seen the Quake done today and Sequelitis videos recently, so this shit was particularly fresh on my mind, haha. It's good that you can turn these off completely, they looked pretty obtrusive in the QL.

edit: someone said "demeaning"? Bit harsh, but I can't really disagree.

So I've been thinking... how many viewers do Giantbomb have?

There's no way to know how many subscribers are there (I'm one, btw).

But with youtube there's a way to know how many non-subs exist. Let's take the Train v. Zombies Quick Look. Arguably one of the best they have ever done, and although people may not realize this by the title (they should) and the fact that many are pissed with the shitty encoding, it has almost 4 days and only 5,657 views.

And they really should split their channel into one with only intern stuff and other with site stuff. Because right now, if you subscribe to their channel, you drown in videos.

Yeah modern Sonic bums me out. If I could get the game and only play as classic, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Oh fancy, they slipped the Uploads section back in. Unfortunately they went back into some other bad habbits.

If you mean YT subscribers, they're listed at 12,825. Averaging the viewcounts for the Quick Looks over the past week (omitting the outlier that is UMvC3), it's a little over 2000 a video. Even assuming 3/4ths of the subs are spambots, there's a bit of a disconnect between their reach and actual views (for reference, CaptainSparklez has 595,000 subs and viewcounts usually level out around 300,000 in a week). I'm especially curious at how long people usually last watching videos since YouTube tracks attention span throughout their duration.

a lot of the intern stuff is awful and should be separated. it was the reason i unsubscribed from the giantbomb youtube channel.

the number of viewers giantbomb has is far less than what a lot of people here think. popularity on gaf usually doesn't reflect the real world and i think the number of viewers has dropped since going to youtube. the quality of the video is very bad now, basically unwatchable on the site since they also run choppy embedded. the only way for free users to watch the content is to copy the source url to watch it on youtube and i doubt everyone is willing to put up with that shit.

i like giantbomb and tested but man the whiskey sites need to get there shit together. they always seem hurting for money and sure video content is expensive but instead of improving things and doing it right they always pick at the sore. they really should test site and content changes before going live as well. one of their designers mentioned on the tested podcast that they do no testing before going live and just let the users find the bugs. not exactly a good method if you're trying to impress people to subscribe.

I included the length as a subtle hint.
Yeah, that is a rather telling little fact.

I skimmed through the 10 minutes and what I gleamed from it: the game has no content, it blinds you with excessive lens flare and then deafens you with shit sound effects. Hard to believe this is a boxed game and not a free to download marketplace title.

The people whole made Nascar Unleased seem to be the people that make the "crap" version of bigger games

- Cartoon Network Racing (2006) for Nintendo DS
- Race Driver: Create and Race (2007) for Nintendo DS
- Ferrari Challenge (2008) for Nintendo DS
- Race Driver: GRID (2008) for Nintendo DS
- TrackMania DS (2008) for Nintendo DS
-Need for Speed: Undercover (2008) for Nintendo DS
- DiRT 2 (2009) for Nintendo DS
- Planet 51 (2009) for Nintendo DS
- Need for Speed: Nitro (2009) for Nintendo DS
- Trackmania Wii (2010) for Wii
- Cars 2 (2011) for Nintendo DS
- Need for Speed: The Run (2011) for Wii and Nintendo 3DS

I guess they had a game made, of some sort, and just stuck some Nascar logos over everything

Kids are a lot dumber these days than we were.

It's not that they're dumber. They just aren't as bored as we were. If they get frustrated by a game, they can do something else. Back when I got a game, it was the game that I was going to play for a few months so I put up with not knowing what today. Nowadays, the kid will probably just watch a youtube video or something.

Well, the thing is that their main site is where people go to watch their videos.
Their Youtube channel is for people to randomly stumble across their videos & maybe want more.

Stereotypical Americans like them find comfort in stereotyping others. Also, it is quite amusing. At least they haven't learned to start calling English people whinging poms; I know they hate that.

That's true. You played until you figured it out, and if you didn't you kept playing anyway. Oh those were the days.

No, they're literally the same videos. They share the same viewcounts. It's actually worse if you take into account the reach they also get with the main site.

They're not dumber, they're just not used to thinking in their games.

And yes, those are not hints, they are doing the thinking for us.

That's true. You played until you figured it out, and if you didn't you kept playing anyway. Oh those were the days.

Or didn't in some cases but that fact was not ground into our faces. We simply stopped playing the goddamn game and got on with our lives.

YouTube counts embedded views. If a video only shows 1000 views that's how many free users have watched it. It doesn't matter if you view the videos on giantbomb or YouTube.
