The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

oh shit, easily best QL in a long time. Surprisingly captivating for watching them flip switches for a half hour. I lost it at the minigun part. Great stuff.

That was amazing. The few minutes they spent taking off after a half an hour of setting things out was tense - although if they botched it then I would have died laughing

I wonder would they ever do this...

...it is one of the few "simulator" games I heard about that I have not found solely through GB videos

It is supposed to be rubbish -
no pun

I bought that shit for the hell of it and made a OT. Game is amazing.

Oh man, as a dude who always dreamed of flipping a switch under a safety cap I have to get that game! lol

It is. And it is funnier than the quick look. Ya'll should dig that up.

You have a link for that? Or at least a date?

EDIT: Wait so I'm watching some tests that Jeff did on the Justin.tv GB account and he's talking with Vinny... Vinny is mentioning that he recorded a podcast with this father? WTF? I remember them joking about that on the bombcast but is that a real thing somewhere? lol

wow the DCS QL was glorious. I felt such a tenseness and sense of satisfaction when they got the plane up in the air. Pretty cool

As for the market, I remember the GFW Podcast talking about these games once and stating even though nobody talks about them in our gaming circles there's a strong support for these games from people who only play these types of games. And really don't "play games" otherwise.

So if this really is that much of a sim, does this mean if you learn how to take this thing up in the air in the game... You can do the same thing with a real one? That's almost a buy right there. Not that anyone will ever let me near one of those, but, yknow. "I can fly a fighter jet, babe".

You know, sometimes the guys can have blonde moments in QLs, but that DNF DLC was just bad design. I was looking for the barrel everyone said about and I didn't even notice it until Brad did.

Well they said it's basically the same thing they use to train guys so yeah.

They only talk about the other flight simulator they did before. I have no idea what you are talking about.

There was a second QL of that last flying sim they did. It was never uploaded though and can only be found in the middle of a completely different video. It was one of the best videos they did. The take off was INCREDIBLE.

I'll just ask here. I heard they discussed the Naniwa incident, where can i watch/listen to that? : D

I think it was during one of the Bombcasts. They really didn't get into it at all, Brad hadn't heard about it yet and Jeff didn't really have the Starcraft knowledge to properly put into context what exactly happened. It's not really worth looking up IMO.

Alright, thanks.

I'm with Dave. There has to be a better way to layout those cockpit controls. It's as if the engineers knew the users would be highly skilled and trained for hundreds of hours, so they assume they'll figure out the clutter. I wonder what the interface is like for more recently engineered jets.

I'm guessing they want them to be reasonably incomprehensible to the average person just in case the average person happens to get in one.

Well you have to remember that the A-10 was first designed in the early 1970s for pilots who were presumably only vaguely familiar with computers and very familiar with physical controls, so Dave's whole "just give me a screen" seemed a bit short sighted. The computers on the modern A-10C were retrofitted in in the last decade or so.

I interned at defense companies while in college.

Here's the problem. See all those modules in the cockpit? There is a good chance they were each developed by completely different companies/contractors. In the defense industry stuff gets contracted out to lots of groups. As a result, each part is almost unto its own. It's generally a good idea because if something fries in the cockpit you can quickly replace it.

Also as he EmCeeGramr said, this thing was developed in the 70's, well before modern GUI design. This WAS cutting edge back in the day. You also have to remember much of this stuff is STILL analog. Anytime you have more analog, your complexity will rise. These systems are also very complex, and pretty much everything is done for a reason, typically per spec.

True!

Also another thing that a web designer might not consider is that those are systems in a 3D space around a seat, not a flat web page. You have a lot of practical considerations to consider when you design those things. For example there are switches that the pilot needs access to with his left hand while he's holding the stick with his right hand. You need to prioritize access to the different systems in fonction of when you need to use it and what else you have to do at the same time while using it.

Finally watched the A-10C quicklook. Damn that was amazing and hilarious. I totally felt the tension when they finally were taking off. If I had a decent PC this quick look would have probably sold me on this game. There's something to be said for a game that lets you learn how to operate a fighter jet.

I prefer flight sims that have passenger planes and such, because then when people laugh at me I can shout angrily about how I will one day save everyone when the pilot chokes on a doughnut and the autopilot fails.

It's much more difficult to fool myself into thinking I'll ever set foot near a A-10C. sadly. :(

Here's some reviews of this sort of stuff by one of the pioneers of the digital review art.

I just watch Forklift 2009 again, this line killed me.

And look you can change camera views, outside... strangely enough we're invisible but it's not about me, it's about you... no it's not, it's about forklifting.

This game looks so boring that I couldn't get more than 5 minutes into the video.
Same. Anything involving Zombies will do that now, though, so it may not be the game's fault entirely. Though I do have to question what the point of it is if the combat is indeed 'not that fun' as Brad said.

I've read somewhere that the game really gets crazy a fair amount in. But if you don't have that dedication, it's probably a lot less fun.

...For perspective, this is after watching DVD flip switches and turn knobs for 30 minutes. Yeah.

Dave, Vinny, and Drew could commentate paint drying and I would probably end up watching it.

When you actually play DCS games regularly and know how to take off and do everything, it was almost heart wrenching to watch :(

My sides, they hurt so much. Such a great QL.

dk_, may want to hotlink that image instead of posting it like that. Ruins the surprise.

He's probably never coming back after his vital contribution to the thread of a "haha oh wow" macro.

I agree with you about the surprise being delightful.

Yeah sure, I'll dig it up in a bit.

Edit: I JUST noticed that someone already posted it haha.
