The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Wow... empty threats. I'm sure that sends shivers down the spine of a multi-billion dollar corporation.

I'd expect as much from bungie.net or xbox.com or gamefaqs, but come on guys.
You can't deny that as more and more people get more and more perturbed there will be more and more people flashing DVD firmwares and pirating the retail release.

I'm going to try my best for this to not become an illogical rant. So here goes...

I, for one, am extremely annoyed. I understand that getting something of this magnitude out to so many people is incredibly complicated and probably above me, but haven't they been planing this for months? I mean, I can't imagine deciding to throw a party, going through the trouble of sending out invites months in advanced, and then not even having some chips and salsa when my guest arrive. I'm also really disappointed in the way Bungie is handling this; they have always, in my opinion, done an excellent job of informing there community only to fumble the ball in overtime.

Best of luck to them getting this fixed. Unexpected things happen -- we get it, but just take some time to let your community know whats up. I mean, isn't it somebody's job to do just that (cough Luke Smith cough).

I'm guessing Crackdown is bugged, whatever attachment code is built into the game isnt connecting with the specific area on the Market Place server.

I think they got a look at how well the servers are handling the existing Beta players and decided they'd rather take this punch in the face than the one they'd get when a couple hundred thousand Crackdown Beta players logged in and took XBL down altogether.

I can't think of much else that would take more than seven hours to fix, when the Beta itself is clearly functional.

It's probably just as time-consuming to put the download up on Xbox Live. Plus, that would enable anyone to play, instead of making people buy something or get a code.

better analogy: the party is awesome, but paying guests are asked to use the service entrance, which happens to be locked.

All the "important" people already have the BETA so no one is really going to make a fuss.

There'll be a fuss. Obviously people on here have blown it out of proportion, but gaming sites have already reported on the problem so it's making waves (...beautiful Halo 3 rendered waves).

I just think the way they are handling it is very unprofessional.
Hey Luke didn't you say you were trying to connect the community and developer?
How bout an update.
Something as simple as"we made some progress" or something.
This is quite possibly the worst screw up in the history of gaming

It would seem like the most logical assumption.

And if this is the case, then they need to roll out another title update. And they can't roll out a title update without going through the whole MS Cert shiznit. We're in for a long wait.

Yeah seems like this is the problem.

This could mean we don't get the BETA for a LOOOONG time.

What a mis-step.

If they are worried about money, they should put it on marketplace for like 400 pts
this would do far more harm than good. charging for a beta that many people already consider themselves to have paid for? shitstorm.

If it was bandwidth they were worried about, there would have been no problem releasing the beta at 5am. There are only about 1,500 players online right now....

Too true. The media and "Gaf insiders" can play. As far as Bungie is concerned, it's just the peasants left.

like I said before anyone with Crackdown achievement points/or is in the Crackdown live menu at a certain should be sent a code for the beta. It's as simple as that.

This is a meltdown of Three Mile Island proportions

We're gettin into some Chernobyl shit now

Then where are all the PS'ed mag covers and newspapers with mushroom clouds?

It possibly could have to do with the fact that the spring dashboard update changed around some of the marketplace content and that would explain that to solve this problem, MS, XBLive, RTW and Bungie have to work together to solve it.

Those are a lot of resources to coordinate in such a small amount of time, IMHO.

Even better analogy: you ordered party favors from an online store and paid extra to have it guaranteed shipped by the date of your party and it's still not there, whilst your neighbor's invite only shindig got their supplies before you without paying extra.

jesus christ i cannot believe i still pay for gold. msft has ****ed up way too many times when it comes to anything downloadable.

and yet i just keep on paying to be abused...

:lol
Duke Nukem Forever has been delayed for 10 years...the beta for a couple of hours.

And there's a toll-booth between you and the locked door.

I love when threads go the "horrible analogies" face off route. This thread is complete! :lol

Solution:

Charge 1600pts to d/l the Beta. Then legit Crackdown owners can send in their UPC barcode, original sales receipt, and two forms of identification to MS and get a 1600 pt card as a rebate....in 8-10 weeks.

That guy on the webcam is gonna have a fun time with all those friend requests/messages. He'll be on the delete button for hours!

1. not a couple, eight, and with no explanation or even a rough eta of how much longer it might be.
2. oh you're a F&Fer right? hmmm.

Well,

Make no mistake: I'm disappointed. But I'm sure they'll get it straightened out eventually. They will already have a PR black eye from this and I'm sure they are going to try to fix it as soon as possible. I do lament the lack of information but <shrug>. The problem is probably something that they don't want to talk about because you will not like the explanation. For example:

"Sorry guys, but the way this is working we can't get the Crackdown link to work without people possibly being able to access it via the marketplace without Crackdown. We have to figure out a way to keep it from getting out to those who did not purchase the game or receive codes from us. The beta is simply not set up to handle the kind of load that a general XBL release would entail, and Crackdown purchasers would feel even more shafted. Please be patient."

Then people would be up in arms saying (without thinking) "Just release the thing on XBL! I don't care!" but the truth is a standard XBL release would bring XBL and Bungie's beta data mining to its knees and that would effectively defeat the purpose.

I can imagine that when I was younger I would've been mad too, but I've matured to a point where things like this don't make me mad anymore. I'm disappointed, but being this mad over a game or even $60 if you hate Crackdown is silly and counterproductive. Just relax and do something else for a while. It'll be up before you know it.

So now its time to play the blame game?

What stage of coping are we at now? Did we revert back to anger?
