The Halo 3 Beta Thread

The game release is three months away: you can bet they have many finished SP segments: judging by their updates, this time they got plenty of time to finish the game and add al the little touches they wanted. I don't know if it will be showed at E3, I only hope it will be at Leipzig, because I'll be there :-)

Of course I know they have finished/polished ready to go Gold segments of SP, but what I was saying was in regards to what they WANT to show the public at E3

started in on halo 2 campaign, having finished halo 1 campaign recently. it's pretty damned good, at least through the first couple stages! i've been wondering whether my personal hype level obscured a lot of halo 2's flaws during my initial playthroughs -- it gets so much criticism and i remember liking it so much. i guess i'll see.

I need to find a used copy of Halo: Combat Evolved. I lost my other copy somehow. Will play through both campaigns on Legendary to get ready for Halo 3.

The game ships in September. I remember with Halo 2's development, they were "done" on the game in September and it shipped in November. They have more time now to do polishing and cleaning up on the game. Everything's done on it right now. They're just probably debugging it. Of course, this is all a complete guess work for me. But I can definitely see them having one area that they've completed for public display.
Music and cinematics are being addressed now as well as the standard, post-production debug process to ensure quality through certification...

Damn Bungie about those replicas. They're both hot and much more appealing to me than the Mark VI helmet. More money out of my pocket. I like being married, but evidently Bungie doesn't give a damn. ****ing homewrecker is what they are...

Bungie, I will have your babies.

Halo 2 has too many infinitely respawning enemies/vehicles, and a general over-emphasis on vehicular combat.

I mean, vehicles are great and all, but when 90% of a game* is spent fighting infinitely respawning ghosts, it gets kind of boring.

Off the top of my heads, most of Outskirts was against vehicles, a lot of Metropolis was against vehicles, and most of Delta Halo was against vehicles.

Worse, the vehicles weren't even a good fight. They just spent most of the time driving towards you whilst boosting, missing, driving backwards, and repeating.

And then there's the huge lack of ammo you have in campaign, which means you have to rely on Covenant weapons. I'm not advocating 20 magazines for a rocket launcher (the amounts in Halo 1 and 2 are fine), but you need 10 or so mags for the Assault Rifle, SMG, Pistol, and all the various 'generic' weapons in campaign. 3 clips do not last a long time.

*Slight exaggeration

i've enjoyed the vehicle bits -- and i didn't notice that the ghosts were respawning infinitely -- but the small ammo stocks are definitely an annoyance

Never saw infinitely respawning vehicles in campaign. Vehicle battles are an earmark of Halo combat and they're one of my favorite parts of the series. I like to go on foot through many of the portions of the campaign, but if I can use a vehicle I will always, hands down, grab one because usually they're not only more fun to move around with, but they pack some kick ass weaponry and functionality.

The vehicular combat in Halo 2 was one of its saving graces. The worst levels or worst parts of levels for me were never the ones which had vehicles, they were always the ones which were on foot, through narrow, linear and predictable corridors. This the reason most people absolutely love Outskirts, Metropolis, Delta Halo, Uprising and The Great Journey.

The best parts of the Flood levels were when we faught against them in the Quarantine Zone on vehicles. The best part of the Heretic levels were in the Banshees. Vehicles, their function, and their ease of use in the series changes up the combat significantly and they're a reason Halo was set apart from many FPS' (not all) back in the day and still to this day.

Terminals!?

Marathon Man

Locate and access all Terminals in the Campaign.

I hope this means what I think it means! Having this method of telling backstory and added details to current events is huge for the Halo universe.

Campaign Meta Game !?!?

I have no clue what this could be but there is one for every mission.

gotta be graw-like multiplayer missions.

and terminals? hot damn. maybe thats how we'll be interacting with cortana for the early (?) part of the game too

That's very illuminating :/

Some of the Multiplayer achievements have me worried about a Gears of War like effect during games, unless when it says
Free for All, does that mean only in rumble pit? That would atleast stop team killing for achievements, and my complaint moot.

I do not think those achievements will affect gameplay at all. I am very happy about them.

There are *no* infinate vehicle spawn in Halo 2.

OMGWTF

Score over <X> points in the Campaign meta-game on the second mission.
OMGWFTBBQ!!!11111on1111!!!

That's as close to spoiler material as I'm coming before launch. Hot damn Bungie. :D

I like vehicle battles, don't get me wrong; I found them great fun in Halo CE, and some of my fondest memories are from sections of Assault on the Control Room where you took out lots of foot soldiers, Shades, Ghosts, Banshees and Wraiths. They are definitely a key part of the series, and I'm definitely not advocating that they should be taken out or anything.

However, in Halo 2, the lack of ammo you carry for each weapon, combined with infinitely respawning vehicles (try standing still killing Ghosts at the start of Metropolis and you will see), and a lack of ammo in general mean you're very limited in how you play the game. You don't have that much choice in how you play the levels because after a short period of time you will be forced into using a certain method to kill enemies. Either using Covenant weaponry, or using vehicles, depending on the part of the level in question.

And that's the real problem I have with the Halo 2 campaign. In Halo CE, you were not forced to play a certain way. If you wanted to, you could tackle entire levels on foot with a large variety of weapons (helped by being able to carry large amounts of ammo, and plenty of weapon caches to restock), or you could make use of vehicles. Each way offered a unique experience and challenge, and you could mix them up as much as you want.

As long as Bungie allow you to carry a lot more ammo in campaign, stop the vehicles from respawning infinitely, add more ammo caches in, and generally offer a large variety of ways to complete a level, things will be a lot better.

Yeah, it appears they are only for Rumble Pit so that takes away my complaint. If they were for team games then it would be a problem. The achievements do seem very reserved and well thought out, I'm quite happy with them.

Nice achievements Bungie, excellent work!

All those achievements are doable. I was worried they would add rediculous 8 kill streak achievements, or 100,000 online kills like some other games have done. But no, all of those are achievable when playing the multiplayer game normally.

As for the
campaign meta-game achievements
...what?

How about you spoiler that shit? Some people don't want to step into the beta thread and get campaign info. Jerks.

Uh ... there are. You can even see them appear in midair if you look closely. For the sake of argument, try staying still in a ghost at the start of Metropolis, killing the enemy ghosts that come towards you. They won't stop ...

We almost broke those Achievements first. Almost... So close...

A very well-rounded list of Achievements, good call Bungie. Everything's attainable and a good portion are challenging. And yeah, "Fear the Pink Mist" has to be the best Achievement ever.

yeah, one thing that i loved about a lot of halo 1's vehicle encounters were the fact that you start on foot and have to fight to basically steal a vehicle from the enemy. there were so few of those in halo 2, most of the vehicle fights they'd hand over a hog or something long before the cation even kicked in. i think they really missed a great gameplay opportunity doing that, especially with the addition of vehicle boarding.

I've taken all of Outskirts and Metropolis on foot - never getting into a vehicle. (Okay, I boarded a Ghost or two, but got out after.) You are wrong, there are a fixed number of Ghosts. Period.

One of my favorite things to do in Halo is play Assault on the Control Room without ever getting into a vehicle. On Legendary.

I do the same thing in Halo 2 (except for the Banshee battles). I also play the tank sequence on Delta Halo by just using it to take out the two Wraiths and then hopping from one Ghost to another - great fun.

The combat in Halo 2 is just as dynamic as Halo's ever was.

No, the best one is:

Maybe Next Time Buddy
Board the same vehicle within 10 seconds after being boarded in any free for all playlist (Online).

I love the name :-D

Also, like you pointed out Ghaleon, this one is really cool:

Marathon Man
Locate and access all Terminals in the Campaign.

It basically means

Halo 3 will have terminals for additional story information the same way that Marathon did. Hot damn!

I've done that before, especially in the Beta. Nothing worse than hearing somebody yell and scream at you for doing it :lol

The one thing I hope Bungie does is reward you with the achievements as soon as you get them. I have lost too many in Shadowrun because they hold them until the end of the game.

That sounds really cool! I've never played Marathon, so I didn't really understand that achievement.

Also, "find" kind of implies the levels will be different in structure than Halo 1 and Halo 2, since it wouldn't be hard to
find a terminal in those games
because of their relatively linear nature. Sounds like things could be more open-ended.

Yeah..
In Marathon you were aboard a ship with a rampant AI, and you accessed computer terminals to read information about the AI as well as communicate with it, I believe

Isn't that something Frankie has been trumpeting since the unveilling?

They've been talking scale, and large open environments. But there are surely indoor sections as well, and this implies they could be more open than the hallways of Halo 1 and 2.

Dude, that's closer than I've ever come. Look at the achievements for each individual campaign level. Holy ****ing cow.

Well looks like I'm not going to get all of the achievements. I don't do scavenger hunts.
That's what I like about them - different things motivate different people. There's an ample supply of "just beat the game" Achievements, and a bunch of MP-related ones of varying difficulty. Then there's a class of Achievements for doing "extra" stuff - finding and collecting. Something for everyone.

Are those achievements official? I thought we would not see them till close to a month or a few weeks from the game. Can someone from Bungie at least confirm them?

Marathon Man has potential to be the best achievement ever!:D
As for 9 levels, that certainly not much, but Halo 1 had ideal length, so I hope levels take a little more time to beat than in H1and it''l be perfect.

I read the name of the first two, then skipped them over. Didn't even count them.

But Voc - you will soon learn to fear the pink mist. Oh yes you will.
