Yeah I remember that too. Was in the MS E3 press conf thread and all of a sudden people start screaming about the H3 trailer being up on marketplace. Good times indeed.

yeah, i remember the download being slow as hell and drohne was one of the first people to download it here and post impressions. it was beautiful

EDIT: here it is, thanks for the link http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3322113&postcount=38

This time last year, I didn't think anything would ever top the Halo 2 announcement trailer for me. When I first saw the scale and scope of what was being presented for H3, however, it was game ****ing over. Then there was Marty's awe-inspiring score for the trailer... I don't know how he does it.

I must've seen the trailer 50 times, and it still gets me every ****ing time. After this fight is finished, I can die a happy man.

Wait so, the Gamehead episode is going on at 1AM PDT, is it being put on GameTrailers at 1AM or just Spike TV?
If it's on gaemtrailers, I'm guessing then 1AM PDT is like 8 or 9 Am here 9 (uk)

Unless you have school on weekends in the UK, you'll be fine.

Spike's site is wrong. Gamehead is airing at 1AM on Saturday (Friday night).

I've been saying all along that Crackdown should be purchased on its own merits, with the Beta as a bonus. I still believe that.

Crackdown was fun for a while, then that excitement waned in about 2 weeks for me.

Yeah, there's been a lot of confusion. Basically, the site and everything say Friday @ 1AM, but if you check your Set Top Box or TiVo or whatever it's Friday night/Saturday morning.

I tried to address all the questions in the OP - I did manage to hit that one.
How: People who were selected through the "Rule of Three" and halo3.com programs should have already received emails confirming whether they got in through those means or not. If you were, a second email with you Beta key will go out as soon as the Beta begins.

More not-Beta news while we wait for it to be Friday.

Halo 2 hits 5 million players!

Posted by sawnose at 5/9/2007 1:09 PM PDT
Moments ago, we watched the odometer of Halo 2 players roll over the 5,000,000 mark. Today also happens to be the 2.5-year anniversary of launch. Here's to continued growth of 2 million players per year!

If you're curious, "ultra theodore" is the 5 millionth player.

(This number refers to the number of unique Live accounts that have played Halo 2 online, not including guests)

I had a discussion with one of my friends yesterday about this. He was wondering why they didn't allow the beta keys and the downloads to start early and simply not have matchmaking active (or any hoppers installed) until the beta went live. This would alleviate the stress of everyone downloading the beta simultaneously, wouldn't it?

Maybe cuase they didnt finish testing the public BETA til this last monday? Anything that goes to the public has to be tested, even though it is a BETA. Releasing it early in the morning solves some of the 'rush', but not all of it. Putting it in the middle of the week when most people have to work also helps too. A majority of folks wont be downloading it til they get home from work or school.

Imagine if the release was on a saturday... around noon pacific time? Could you imagine the rush then? :lol

I think Bungie set the date and time that they did as a deterrent to any delays. The MM playlist update is a perfect example. It had been promised for weeks, but technical problems kept pushing it back. With something as hyped and as anticipated as the Halo 3 Beta, it would be genocide for Bungie if they delayed it even a day. They wanted to make sure EVERYTHING was PERFECT and that there was NO chance of ANY delays. That's why it's on that specific date and there's no early period.

I don't think either of your understood what I said...I don't know when they finished pushing it through cert, but even if it was Monday, that has nothing to do with my suggestion. Neither does the implication that there's an early period.

I suggested that Bungie allow the beta's download to launch prior by a day or so and simply disable matchmaking by removing hoppers and/or adding a message which requires a small udpate before players procede. Once the beta's lauched, the update becomes available when people access the beta. This relieves some of the stress on Xbox Live's servers as well as the frustration people would have by waiting whatever their download time will be.

I don't think it's a huge problem, but I think it would have been an interesting approach.

I see what you mean now... If not that just release it fully active a day early and say nothing. When someone finds out about it their will be gradual increase of people downloading it as the word spreads.

Supposedly Rule of 3 winners (and I assume the winners from the contest back in December) will get an email with an Activation Code to enter in on the Marketplace. Enter that in, you download the beta, and you go from there. Worked the same way for the Shadowrun Beta. They emailed you a code for Marketplace, yada, yada, yada.

From what others have said, the emails will go out when the beta goes up.

FYI - There is a new Halo 3 video on marketplace today. The description says it is all about Master Chief and his graphical upgrades.

Question for Frankie, if you're out there in GAF-land tonight.

How extensive will the XP/ranking system be in the Beta? Will it function more or less how it's currently intended to come Fall?

Also, are games going to stat tracked on Bungie.net, if only for the duration of the Beta?

Maybe you've heard of him, maybe you haven't... but around Microsoft, Mr. Jukes has established a name for himself as a tireless, hardcore and fanatical player of Halo who isn't too shabby in the video production department either.

Over the last few months, Jukes' logged an incredible (bordering on inhuman) amount of games through the internal Alpha and Beta tests for Halo 3 and he was just as involved in the first ever Halo 2 online tests as well. In addition to playing the games, Mr. Jukes also became known for his entertaining videos - most of which focused on jumping. Yes, jumping. It doesn't sound like much but some of the jumps and tricks he pulls in the games had to be seen to be believed.

I asked Mr. Jukes a few questions to help us get to know the man behind the controller and pass along some of his insights into the Halo 3 beta....

When you're not playing Halo 3, what do you actually do at Microsoft?
Mr. Jukes: I am a developer on the Windows Core User Experience Team. I was responsible for the Start Menu that shipped in Vista and am busy working on the next version of Windows.

How did you get started making wacky jump videos for Halo?
Jukes: During the Halo 2 Beta I found a couple of jumps on Zanzibar that really opened my eyes to the tactical possibilities of taking the less obvious route. I showed them to some of my friends and they thought the jumps could come in pretty handy. From that point on, I was always on the lookout for alternative ways to reach a destination. I had fully explored most of the maps that shipped with Halo 2 and found a lot of useful jumps by the time it went public so I thought it would be cool to set up a site and make some videos to share with the community.

Why do you love jumping so much?
Jukes: I enjoy the social aspect of playing a custom game with friends where we aren't trying to kill each other. I also enjoy the challenge of completing a really difficult jump after many failed attempts. I am totally psyched for the (Halo 3) Saved FIlms feature. This video was made with a very early and basic version... I can't wait to see the videos people will end up making with the full feature. Never again will I miss a shot because I didn't have my capture device recording!

What was your fondest memory playing the Halo 3 internal beta?
Jukes: (NOTE: His real answer was too secret to reveal, so here's his backup answer) -- Playing until 4 a.m. with some friends while trying to break the leveling system. In the process we lined up some sweet Spartan Laser kills and had some fun with the Trip Mine and Fusion Cores.

How many games of Halo 3 do you reckon you've played thus far?
Jukes: If you include the Halo 3 Alpha and Beta, I think I logged about 1,100 games.

What advice would you give to the rest of world as they prepare to play Halo 3 for the first time?
Jukes: Have fun and don't be a douche.

Oh, and one more thing... is it true that you can destroy New001 at Halo 3?
Jukes: Oh man... a chance to bash New001 in a public forum with no recourse for retaliation. It feels like Christmas. In all honesty, I don't think anybody involved in a game with New ends up winning in the end... no matter the outcome.

Before you check out Mr. Jukes' Halo 3 video debut, please keep in mind that this video was produced using the internal beta version of Halo 3. This means it's a bit older than what the rest of the world will start playing in the next few days. It also means that it has all sorts of debug text all over it - this won't be in the version you get your hands on. And, this was fully sanctioned and approved by Bungie - unlike some of those other "leaked" videos that have ended up online.

Check out Mr. Jukes' Halo 3 "Betalicious" Video HERE! (WMV) (right click, 'save-as')

We hope you enjoy it - we did. And a huge thanks to Mr. Jukes for putting this together for our amusement.

See you online soon!

i would have posted this days ago but couldnt.

i cannot wait for this game. jesus christ i bought an HDTV and 5.1 speakers months ago expecting the beta ~march.

Looks pretty good to me, awesome waterfall and pretty water.

- No more lock-on for the rocket launcher it seems. rocket launcher has a different gun model , looks more like the halo 1 version.
- spartan laser is a BEAST
- plasma nades look a lot stronger

brute shot looks different

video was made with the saved films feature

edit: awesome jump at the end of the video on high ground, had a deployable gravity pad thing and he drove the mongoose on top of it and jumped over a gate/wall. :lol

There will be a beta version of the Halo 3 stat tracking activated on Bnet during the beta, it--like the very beta you'll be playing--will use a portion of the functionality coming this Fall.

Looks pretty good! Bloody hell the water looks fantastic and the trees blowing in the wind the HDR lighting, its all there. Most importantly how much is going in those levels. It looks great.
