The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I don't see the big deal with the laser, it has 5 shots, and the guy using it was very good, I doubt your average player is going to run around wrecking shit with it as well as he did.

were all those one shot kills headshots? some of them looked like body shots to me. its like a rocket launcher/sniper. also it does pretty good damage to the vehicles.

I don't think so, it's only dangerous in the hands of somebody who's really good at aiming at a moving target.

its a power weapon. looks like it fits right in with the sniper/sword/rockets to me.

question about the laser, when its in cool down mode can you switch weapons ? what if they were forced to keep it equipped and make you then pretty much unarmed for the duration of the cool down.

heh I really shouldn't be making these observations until i've played it but I cant help it. :lol
I see why not since that's the way it's with other cool down weapons.

And it is a one hit kill I think but it needs a 3 second charge up to shoot.

Headshots aren't required for "one hit" kills. It's supposed to be an anti-vehicle weapon, so of course it's powerful. The downsides are extremely limited ammo, you have to charge it to fire it and there's no lock-on (cough RL) so you actually have to aim.

Yeah, and it would appear that it's more effective against vehicles than the Rockets, but less effective against players out of vehicles, since it doesn't seem to have any splash damage.

Also, there's targeting reticule that appears. Not much help if you're not looking in that direction, but if you see that laser sight pointing in your direction - move!

yup. i think that was exactly the idea behind it actually. i imagine the charging laser acts as a beacon for a lot of other players saying "shoot me" as well

That too. I'm already training my jump button muscle memory so if I get a glimpse of a targeting beam, boing!

the laser looks way too powerful

Weapons are unbalanced by there very nature, and if all weapons were completely balanced it would make for a boring game. The question is, does the spartan laser have a counter or a weakness? I don't think we will know those answers until we have a chance to play with it.

In either case, I think the spartan laser looks fun, and I'm wondering if it will be part of Team Sniper (my favorite playing mode).

We need HD videos stat. From what I've seen, Halo 3 looks MUCH better in HD.
That's the thing. The Alpha shots that were torn apart so many times look pretty damn good in HD. They're here, for reference. What I saw in that video is a big jump from that in detail, lighting and other areas (the water). The HD screens tomorrow (I'm making an assumption here) should be amazing.

Here's my problem with it, and don't take this as trolling, cause I'm as excited as anyone here to play it.

But, Halo 1 and 2 really pushed the envelope in terms of graphics. This game, from what I can tell is just on par with other games.

I got excited reading Frankie's blogs about water moving around you, 3d grass (which I thought which meant actual grass everywhere instead of a flat green texture) I got really excited, and now I see that's not really the case. The 3D grass is merely the same technique everyone has been using this gen.

Whatever, I'll get passed the graphics once I have this game on my HDD.

YEAAHHHH!

i demand the other jump. i like the way the other spartan throws a nade at the rider, only to have the grav lift catch it and toss it away

i wont comment on all that, you are entitled to your opinion, but there is definitely 3d grass, and lots of it. watch the video again

eh, aiming in Halo isn't exactly the hardest thing in the world.

Depending on the amount of magnetism auto-aim the Spartan Laser has will determine how powerful it will be against opponents out of vehicles.

I swear if you can snipe swipe with that thing, it's gonna be absolutely ridiculous.

The Spartan Laser's weakness is no splash damage or lock-on, so you need a clean shot. Also, the charge-up draws attention to yourself, and there's a cooldown time.

How can you make this assumption when all we've seen are 480p videos

I really don't think 720p will make it look that much better... but yeah lets just wait 6 days and then make assumptions.

Mine + Grenade = Wow
Killjoy medal for ending a killing spree is neat.
The hill for King looks a little tall and obscuring, but as always we will see.

The fact there's three-second charge, it's not going to be a big issue like you're insisting.

I'm content with the way the MP looks currently, if it looked like that in the final game I'd be happy and thats from this low-res movie.

the SP on the other....well the graphics whore in me has demands and I hope they will be reached, when I say demands I'm not really talking about texture quality or effects but scale, and the amount of shit going on around you basically, I have very high expectations of Bungie.

The 3 second charge won't mean anything in the long run. :lol

Good players will manage that accordingly.

The resolution won't matter. I didn't see any real 3D grass, I didn't see the vegetation move when someone walked by it, I didn't see the water move around someone.

Maybe they're in there, maybe there aren't. Right now, I'm really not impressed.

And that's fine, we're being very limited to what we can see, but I'm going to cut down on my hopes for this games visuals.

What? The three second charge means you can't walk around a corner and swipe snipe someone in a moments notice. It changes EVERYTHING about the assumptions you are making.

The Spartan Laser has a three-second charge, and during that time a targeting laser goes out letting everyone know that you're warming up a shot. After that, you get a split-second burst of instakill power, and then a long cool down period. Plus, it's a power weapon, meaning one or two on a map, max.

On paper it's meticulously balanced. We'll see when we get to play it next week.

I must say how cool does the chief look with his weapons on his back ? :D , i've always liked the image of warriors with swords and shit on their backs, makes them look heroic.

Yeah the game just doesn't look like it's going to "wow" in the graphics department.

If the final version exceeds my expectations then great but I've come to terms with the fact that this is how Halo 3 will look like more or less.

oh damn i just realized that by this time tomorrow the halo 3 bedaton will have already passed.

cannot wait til freakin tomorrow. more forza 2 demo action plus all the info and media from the press.

I think I need to join you there.

Anybody else feel like we're getting set up for a sucker punch. With all attention focused on the multiplayer side of things, we haven't seen a thing of campaign. Not one screen. With multiplayer looking the way it does right now, I can only imagine what the main game looks like. When does bungie begin to show parts of the single player. Its been so long I've forgot when they started in the previous games. Was it near release? Anyone?

Are you saying Frankie has been lying in the updates? Wait until the final version. He said the Beta wouldn't have all of the final graphical touches.

I hear that H3's campaign is fully 2D. :O

Multiplayer usually looks worse than Campaign. At least that's what it was for the previous games in the series. (afaik)
