The Halo 3 Beta Thread

holy shit that's awesome!

I remember Stinkles talking about this in one of their weekly updates a while back, which brings up a question; do the guns sink or float depending on their physical features?
Actually they just take some time to sink:

Yes, Best map and why?

I've asked this before but got no replies. :)

my favorite is definitely valhala so far. its gorgeous, huge, but unlike other big maps, action can always be found just a man cannon away :)

i've only played snowbound a few times, but its probably the best looking map. a bit confusing, but could become a favorite. high ground is really great too (honestly, they all are), but it seems the most geared towards ctf or something rather then slayer (which i played exclusively thus far)

fully charged plasma shots now stop vehicles dead in their tracks!

the noob combo is still present, however, the charged plasma barely seems to track at all, but does have a more rapid trajectory.

Man, this is going to be sick.

Thanks for the impressions! I'm glad to hear that the tracking on the plasma pistol has been reduced - used to hate it when it seemed to track around pillars.

When you say it stops them dead in their tracks...even if they are going full speed? And does it have to be head on - if you hit them in the side will it potentially push the vehicle horizontally or maybe flip it?

I think he means a charged plasma pistol shorts a vehicle's engine out for a second or two

which is kinda cool

yup, my friend and i learned that the hard way. and by stops dead, i mean dead in your tracks. very effective anti mongoose weapon.

and about the water, wow. bullets hitting it, waves rolling, real 3d ripples and dead bodies floating downstream. best water ever, no question about it

But I'm wrong.

nope, plasma pistol :O

ok, after a few hours, i need a break and to pot impressions (and hopefully a small vid or two of cool things)

i'm not really going to talk about the obvious or likely covered stuff, but bare in mind, i havent read this thread in quite some time (dont know whats already been posted). this is stuff that i found absolutely awesome, and maybe some gameplay scenarios i've been apart of that really capture that halo feel.

first, the sound. oh my god the sound. bungie has always been good in this regard, but this is so far above and beyond other games. stinkles has mentioned the echo effects of gunshots off in the distance. he likened them to watching your favorite war movie ala saving private ryan. he is absolutely telling the truth. holy crap is it awesome hearing fierce battles in the distance. each gun has its own distinct sound as well, the chain gun (more on that in a bit) especially sounds fearsome. all the gun shots sound meatier, the ambient sounds continue to impress, but really, you have no idea how great the distant sounds are, vehicle engine noises included. oh, and a really nice touch (bungie is known for their attention to details) is when you die in water, and the camera shifts under the surface to watch your dead body, all sounds are muffled realistically as the water distorts all the effects. <hinting at an attention to deeper water or underwater fighting? dunno>

quick word about the graphics, they are amazing. the hdr is completely realistic, grass is beautiful and plentiful, and once again, bungie doesnt hesitate to have loads of intricate detail strewn about, including leaves falling from trees on high ground.

other stuff. fully charged plasma shots now stop vehicles dead in their tracks! the stationary chaingun is removable, you're slow as hell with it, unable to change weapons or toss nades till you drop it, but you're also a walking tank and wave of destruction with it. it and the hand held missle launcher (not the rocket launcher mind you) are way cool and both do have limited ammo. the noob combo is still present, however, the charged plasma barely seems to track at all, but does have a more rapid trajectory. the mongoose is an absolute blast to drive, and with a gunner on the back, extremely usefull.

now, onto the fun stuff, gameplay recaps. first, i'm crazy pleased (and halo 1 fans will be too) that vehicle physics in regards are much closer to the first game then halo 2. no longer will it be nigh impossible to lift a warthog off the ground with a well timed grenade. i found this out when one was chasing me and drove right where i anticipated and tossed a grenade, sending the warthog literally doing barrel rolls over my head. the driver and his passengers were ejected and the combined might of the three of them still finished me off sadly :(

another warthog related story for you. by the way, the best stories involve warthogs, and maybe even more so, mongeese (plural?). i was gunner and my buddy and i were chasing a fully loaded mongoose on valhala. they had just taken cover behind on of the bases when i instructed the driver to hold position up front so we could nail them head on as they came around again. then i saw them driving ontop of the base... and onto the man canon. the obvious "pull" moment occured, but this time i was directly underneath them as they flew over my head blasting them with the hogs gun for an easy double kill.

and one more (and again, hopefully a quick yotube vid of this, i saved this match). i was alone on foot when out of nowhere a mongoose ripped by me and nearly flattened me like roadkill. i spun on him, fired some shots, but i was in trouble. he came again and just missed me, but as he passed i got off a melee attack and puched the sob dead right off his vehicle :)

any questions?
Yeah, I agree man! I was playing the beta and you know you're playing a Bungie game when you start to notice all those neat little things and effects they've put in, be it gameplay, graphics, sounds, UI or.... Like the first time I heard the underwater sound distortotion effect. The stuff they've added fits so well into the gameplay, it plays very smooth.

I'm still buzzing. Fabulous.

I was driving the little ATV thing and this guy and I played a game of chicken...and we rammed into each other and it felt soooo good.

Also neat....hmm...the water is really neat. Moves realistically and stuff.

I can't even remember anything else it was so fun. Nice level design. Felt like there was a lot of room to have nice battles.

Oh, grenades felt powerful, and physics were awesome! I threw one of those spike grenade things in the tunnel and it exploded and the Mongoose went FLYING across the screen. I lol'd.

Wow that's awesome, so its a sort of EMP effect I take it, and the vehicle would glide to a stop?

Edit: I just realized... imagine hitting a banshee with one of those :D

do rockets still lock on to vehicles?
plasma pistol tracking, have they re-worked it at all? is the 'noob combo' still in tact

So people who paid 60$ to play the beta have to wait a week to play the beta, but assholes who post on forums all day can play it now for free? THAT'S BULLSHIT.

What media player are you using? Try media player classic or The Core Media Player if you're having trouble with WMP.
It's not as bad with those two, but it still chugs. S'more of a hardware issue, I need my desktop back. :/

Thanks for the impressions op_ivy, that's the kind of stuff I was lookin' for. Any other noteable changes to returning weapons?

i havent seen the actual rocket launcher, but the mini missle launcher thing does apparently. i dont know the details, but one of my friends said he got it to track. when your in a vehicle and someone is trying to get a lock their is an alarm warning which is another nice touch.

and as i said, the noob combo is there, its still useful, but nowhere near as cheap. bungie seems to have done a great job with balancing it so far.

I don't think the rocket launcher homes any longer (haven't used it yet). The missile pod has a slight tracking, but it's slower and takes multiple shots to take down a vehicle.

Random detail: when you are scoped in the sniper rifle and get killed, the scope snaps to static for an instant before you die. It's a great little touch.

Just had a great game of Assault on Valhalla. I took out the two defenders (one through mêlée, planted the bomb, then shot the other one while he panicked :lol ). Armed it, BOOM.

Next round, defense. I snag the missile pod and take up position in the arming zone. I thought maybe they'd try to come in the same front right door I did - and they did. Three guys come in and I hear the lead guy say, "What the hell is THAT?" I unload all of the missiles from the pod in a frenzy, and shout "it's the missile pod, how do you like it?!" Lots o dead bodies. :D

This game destroys Halo 1 and Halo 2. Just murders them.

If it's any consolation, I bought Crackdown too...and enjoyed it!

Does anyone have any questions or anything? Photos I could maybe take?

they dont seem to different. the bruteshot is much more effective, as is the needler, but the rest seem pretty similar to their h2 version.

oh, almost noone is duel weilding. i gave it a shot once (to try to brute spiker) and it just doesnt seem needed. even against someone with duels up close, you still have a good chance against them with the assualt rifle

Please stop. I'm going to burrow in my backyard, build a den and hibernate until Wednesday morning. I'll emerge at 4:30ish, make myself a nice meal and sit down for a three hour download. :lol

I don't think anyone has answered it yet so...

Is the auto-aim closer to Halo 1 levels or Halo 2 levels?

I was afraid they might nerf duels entirely, which sort of undermines their thinking for Halo 2. they should still be a viable preference, and brutal at close range (although as long as the BR is pretty much intact and the AR functional I'll probably rarely touch them).

Autoaim...hhmmmm, good question.

To be honest, I didn't find it all that magnetic in the first round I played. I don't think I got a kill that round, though :lol

I didn't really think it was too overbearing. I couldn't feel it nudging me towards the character, and I could feel myself still able to nudge the reticle upwards towards the head.

Someone who has played them both more recently might know.

edit: I tried Dual Wielding with the spiker and gave it up. You lose grenades, which are really powerful now....especially because there are many types of grenades...
