The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Thanks guys for all the impressions/videos. Halo 3 is shaping up much better than I thought. It's very good to hear dual wielding is reduced in importance, and the long distance game is back. Shoe is notoriously critical, especially of halo, and hearing such glowing impressions is a good thing.

Weapon balancing and all the new weapons are welcome as well. The new physics, graphics, all of it.. cannot wait until the end of the year!

I won't be playing the beta due to lack of broadband for summer (living out where we're lucky to get satellite) but by the time the retail release is out, I'll be online with all of you!

I wonder how many gears kids are gonna be whining about the graphics, without understanding that the pace, performance, size, and physics are much more important than the detail in gears.
 
I do think elites will be in the final game too. I also think you'll be able to use two swords but there won't be a lunge attack.

I love the look and the sound of the game too, Bungie has really nailed it. Thank god. I was hoping for it not to take the movie curse of 3.

The overall package is more impressive than Gears, imo.

The needler in Halo 1 didn't suck. It wasn't easy to master, but you could do some great damage mid-range and in tight corridors.

Of course, the needler was a great weapon in the Campaign mode of Halo 1. Elites are so easily killed with it.
 
Tieno, Ghaleon, someone, send me a video file! I want to see you guys playing. (Granted, I got to see Ghaleon last night, in my sights ^_^).

So far, I'm very impressed, overall. Graphics are nice and sharp. Does it look like Gears or the Killzone 2 trailer? No. Does it look like a next gen Halo? Yup. Asides from a bit of jaggies (could vary a bit by TV. Xbox is set to 1080i, upscaled to 1080P by the set on a 50" SXRD A2000), the color, textures, and lighting are awesome. There's some room for improvement, but I would never call this Halo 2 HD.

As others have said, sound is godly. And I'm saying that off my TVs speakers. I'll be running the sound system this afternoon. It really adds to the "oomph" of the weapons. Hearing distant battles, bullets whizzing by (or through you), everything sounds leagues better than Halo 2's sound design.

I don't know why, but the game seems a good clip faster. Gameplay just seems faster. Auto-aim is greatly reduced from Halo 2 so far. Not that I'm great with the BR in Halo 2, but my accuracy was way off in the beta, and I feel it's due to less auto aim. I never saw any instance of "pull" of my cross-hair over an enemy. Btw, nicest dual wield combo, IMO? Spiker and Plasma Rifle. I took down several people in short order on Snowbound with that combo, even someone on a Ghost.

Matchmaking is nice. Don't know if they'll keep it in the final product, but seeing how many people are playing in the lobby you're in (Team Skirmish, Rumble Pit, Team Training, etc), and watching the system go from looking for "Ideal" match, then "Good" match, then ANY match, and the fluctuations of level limit as it tries to find players to match you with, is very cool. The Service Tag menu is very cool, and if you pull up a friend in the guide, and they're in the beta, you'll see some new Halo 3 oriented options when you pull the friend up, including looks for shared films.

Best thing about the beta so far? No racists, no cheaters, no glitchers. Virtually every game has ended with "Good Game" or such. And NO DROPPERS in team games! I know that won't last in the final game, but damn, it's nice. It's like Halo 2 back in Nov. 2004.

anyone care to talk about it? Does it control like Halo 2 or Halo 1? (i mean, when you press backwards... do you hover or sink like a rock?) Does it have the fuel rod bomb?? or something else?

That is the main reason I'm disappointed I didn't snag a F&F invite. The first few days of a new multiplayer game always seem to be the nicest. Hopefully the good vibes will hold off through next week, and ideally the entire beta.
 
Saved videos:

You have to have Halo 3 loaded to see the vids. No one sends you a video. Each player has 6 slots that he can upload a video too. After you save a film, go to your service record and select file share. There you can select which of your saved films to upload.

After that, anyone who looks at your service record can see your shared videos (again, only can be done from H3 beta). Select the video you want to grab from someone else's file share, and grab it. Each video is roughly 4 MB, so it's real quick to upload and download.

As sweet and slick as the UI is, it's gets a bit unintuitive the further you drill down, imho.

They work perfectly here. Are you using ethernet or wifi?

You should set it to 720p because at 1080i you're limited to 30 fps refresh rate, whereas at 720p you can potentially get 60fps from the game (if it renders that fast). Definitely do it for Forza 2, you'll see a difference. It natively renders at 720p in the 360 anyhow and only upscales and interlaces the image for 1080i as it sends your TV.

Have you played Gears of War online? Its pace, performance, size, and graphic detail is proof it can be done.
 
Thanks to Tieno, Ghaleon, and urk. After some more extensive play, I can certify this with the Kevbug Seal of Awesome™. I totally feel like High Ground is the most fun map I've played, with Valhalla a close second. I love the asymmetry.
 
Good game guys, I suck a bit at Halo (evidence by my low kills on snowbound) but I'm relearning it all over again. Too bad I couldn't speak, it's kind of annoying. It was great hearing you guys speak and babies cry.

To whoever I betrayed with the flag, it was in the heat of the moment and I saw a blue guy and started to pounce on him, didn't realise there was someone else there.

I saved your ass too! Lit that dude up and you turned around and popped my in the face with the flagpole. You couldn't see it for my visor, but I cried a little.

He should set it to 1080p if his TV takes 1080p via component or VGA. Or if he has an Elite.

OMG!!! :lol I must admit this is putting my jedi training to the test. The sudden out burst of media and seeing people on my friends list playing the beta makes it hard to be patient.

Man this is driving me crazy. I can't leave this thread. I have to leave this thread. Man i want to play so bad. I'm losing my mind. Somebody needs to slap me around a little bit. Maybe kick me in the chest.

You guys realize how much WORSE it's going to be once the beta ends and after getting to play it for 3 weeks, you have to wait months for the release, right?
