The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I can't believe I got a private message for a joke I made about inviting Dopey to the beta ://

In other news, the beta hits right when I have this massive stream of hours at work and I am probably going to go into Insomnia Mode for those days. Good times!
 
Even though I don't get to play the beta until Wednesday, I still think it's really cool that the gaming community is excited about Halo again. It's been too long.

It will feel like an eternity ago once we all get our hands on the single player and realise that it's still a disappointment.

I was kidding because I really don't have any angles. I mean, it was between an obvious UGP reference or the fact I had to work the Halo 2 launch and will probably be working the Halo 3 launch, so that's kind of...pitiable?

Anyway, if you guys are going to take the begging, pity, "you owe me" approach why not just try them all at once and see how well it works.

I am your biggest fan ever since Halo 1 came out. Partly because I am your (son/daughter) from when you left my mom at that (party/bar/restroom) during your college days (or were really drunk). I also (am paralyzed from the waist down/have cancer/have AIDS/have a deadly flesh eating virus/or a combination of the above if your feeling ballsy). As you can imagine I don't have much time to live and would love to see Halo 3 in its HD glory before I die. It would mean the world to me if you sent me a beta invite that way I could die with a smile on my face.

P.S. My (puppy/kitty make sure to give them a really cute name but not too cute like Fluffy) died today. That was my (second/third/fourth if you want to push it) one. I am (so lonely/in so much pain).
 
Heh, I've never had so many friend request!

I'm gonna sum up some WTF moments

-On Snowbound, from quite a distance, I threw a grenade at two red guys, the grenade bounced on one red guy's head, in the direction of the other killing him.
-On Valhalla, at the foot of a small hill suddenly a mongoose flies over me, I start to pump it full of led.
-Again on Valhalla, at the mid section there's this big rock in two levels, I'm at the river and suddenly a warthog with two blue guys comes flying over the hill, tumbling in the air, landing on its side and I start to pump it full of missiles (7 in total, couldn't control myself :lol )
-It's a great feeling when you and one of your teammates have a demounted gatling gun and you're just standing side by side shooting at everything that moves (master chief is so badass in 3rd person)
-Got killed but was able to throw a plasma nade, killed to other guy and got three medals (killjoy, sticky and grave killer)
-Seeing someone descending from a mancannon and starting to shoot him.
...

There's some crazy cool lighting going on in the Snowbound tunnels and caves. So pretty!
 
my most prominent complaint right now:

The Assault Rifle is WEAK. We're talking weaker than SMG weak. Close Range, Medium Distance... It doesn't matter. A Halo 2 SMG would take down someone faster than the Halo 3 AR.

That's hard, probably Valhalla. I love blood gulch and Coagulation, green hills, water, driving the warthog and using the mancannon.
Snowbound is starting to grow on me too, with the cool caves and tunnels. And I love snow in Halo. I hope there's a big snow map where you can use the warthog. One of my biggest pet peeves with halo 2 is that there isn't enough snow.

Well the trip mine killed the two on the top while the person on the right died from the plasma grenade.

so can anyone clarify: is there any way to set up a custom game or something like it or can you only play with friends in your party and not against them?

how is Highground? it seems like it would be a perfect map for one flag CTF games but I'm wondering how well it holds with up with the rest of the game modes.

We played a round of CTF on High Ground. It's personally my favorite map because it seems set up to have a lot of individual hot pockets of action. It worked well for 1 flag CTF because the gate in the center closes, a bit like Zanzibar in Halo 2.

I think that once you open the center gate, it works really, really nicely. It's narrower than most maps, but there's a lot of pathways and stuff you can maneuver around.

Neither Ghaleon, urk, nor I could find the switch to actually OPEN the gate on High Ground though. :\

I'm happy. Very content. Getting used to some of the stuff in the game. Control scheme is fairly hard to get used to. I keep confusing the grenade switch button because Halo 2 on 360 has it on the other side.

I wish the Halo classic control scheme was in the beta. Oh well.

Vehicles : I've used the mongoose, warthog and ghost and they all control BEAUTIFULLY. I loved the vehicles in Halo 2 and now they're even better! can't wait to try the banshee!

Weapons

Spikers were good from what I've used, I used a needler once but it was ineffective... it didn't help the battle i was having was close quartered. BR is basically the same as Halo 2... A little more fair though I think. I almost got to an SMG to use (my favorite weapon in Halo 2) but I was sniped right when i going to pick it up. And the AR? Feels like a paintball gun when I use it.

I like the missile pod... LOVE the turret (in 3rd person)... Sniping is a LOT easier now. Quickly the spike grenade has become my favorite grenade. It's like a sticky grenade but you can throw it at walls. :>

I haven't been able to use equipment properly yet because everytime i grabbed something I was mobbed by 3 people everytime! :<

I can't really give much on gametypes... We got mauled in a match of territories... and the vip match no one but me was really playing the gametype (yay) but then we got lagged out.

Right now it takes 5-10 minutes to get into a match because of low population... so i'm not really complaining there. Just hate the constant Team Slayer in the skirmish playlist. If I wasn't getting so much Slayer, I'd tell you about the other game types (Assault, CTF, KOTH, etc)

I've learned that I'm a good target for the spartan laser :lol

Yeah, that was frustrating, hearing you guys talk about the switch, where is the switch, I can find't switch, and I was running alongside you guys and shooting at the switch trying to show you where it was everytime someone wondered where the switch was...:lol
Highground has a lot of cool places for firefights, I like the verticallity and taking ground from a lower point.


I've been killed plenty times by the AR, from a distance it's quite effective.

Only just realised the missile pod can home in.

The warthogs are more stable and they land more on their wheel when they go tumbling, like a cat!

Seriously. There is a very good reason why a lot of people tend to always keep the AR as their back up weapon. Once you know how to use it, it's hotness.

And the Needler is rapetastic to the point where it's worth calling off in panic as a power weapon.

read the rest of my sentence damnit! the needler i only used once and it was in quick tight quartered battle...

it was ineffective in the battle because I lost it :lol
 
Yes, spiker grenades are awesome. The AR is a beast and I love starting off with it. It feels like it's perfectly tuned for mid range combat.

Also, the NEEDLER IS A BEAST!
 
People are using the spartan laser in a variety of ways. It seems to work well in High Ground. People stand on the, uh, high ground (the bridge) and charge it and then unleash it into the little gulch type area. I get hit by it every time:lol

The community is so amazing right now. I've had nothing but fantastic games with courteous players.

Chat has been pretty mundane so far. The only funny moment was when Ghaleon's kid was in the background crying :lol

The wait until Wednesday wouldn't be a problem, at least for me, if it wasn't for the massive amounts of people posting their impressions and war stories on here. Then, if I try to ignore the thread and go to LIVE, I end up seeing anywhere from 5-8 people at any given time sitting in the Halo 3 beta.

Same. I think I've sent hate-messages to just about everyone except for Scoot. I'll get around to that later. :P

This is certainly some kind of cosmic backlash for being fortunate enough to purchase a retail copy of Halo 2 like a week before it's launch.

Luke, yours will come too, one of these days.
