The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Rors, will you be on later today? If so we should try and get together. I've only played 4 matches, but i'll have more time today after work. Would be a good test for how well the network code is written since we had problems in madden before the update :)

Speaking of which, I watched that on film last night. :lol It did not blow up. You essentially assassinated the guy with a mine upside his head. :lol

I knew it!

Awesome. I can't wait until those things are editable.

More than anything else, the interface and community features in this game ALREADY put it in a class of its own.

It deserves the avalanche of sales it shall most assuredly recieve. It is a work of art in the medium of batshit fun.

So press down instead!

... Ok let me change that to I shouldn't have to press crap. Why not press a direction for proximity talk instead? That would cut down on the trash talking and then I could still talk to my teammates without pressing crap.

Exactly. I love having to not hear the assholes, but i miss hearing my teammate. I feel like it makes team games harder. Like you said I shouldn't have to interrupt my movement to talk to my teammates. I just shouldn't. Hell, in the voice options you can select team only, so its not like they can't filter the chat. I just don't want to have to push up every time I want to say something to people.

I'm torn. I'm used to having to hit up from playing Halo2 so much, but I see where you're coming from. It would make sense, with the new easy-mute functionality to have team talk on all the time. That way you could mute any annoying spammers on your team. Only thing I can think of is conserving bandwidth and keeping the lines a little more clear. (Nothing like hearing a teammate yelling "Oh, yeah? You like that bitch? Huh?! DO YA? DO YA?" and having no idea where he's at or what's going on over there, while you need someone to cover you backside).

Yup, I'll be around later. Probably late afternoon-evening. I'm all for partying up.

Question: Are there any controls to the vids? If there were, I sure couldn't find them :\

It's not broken. It's called proximity voice and it's in there to add tactical depth to the game. It was in there in Halo 2 as well, though if I remember, you had a few options to play around with. Presumably, Bungie could add those in for the full retail release if they chose to do so.

Is it a possible for bungie to to fix the dpad thing in an update to the beta?

I doubt they'd fix it as they intended it to be that way. Now they might change it. I think their decision is wrong, but it could be to save bandwidth as someone else said. As it is now though, I just don't feel like in team matches I'm actually part of a team. Nobody says a word.

And Rors, I couldn't find any either. I was trying to fast forward but it wouldnt. What I think is hilarious is during a recorded match there was a point where this one guy was lagging and he kept dropping down to the ground and then back up into the air. The film actually shows him doing what I saw in the game. I didnt think they'd take things like that into account.

After initially being a bit underwhelmed upon first play i'm VERY impressed. This game kicks ass and the weapons seem to all be useful in their own right so far. The assault rifle seems deadlier than it should be right now IMO but we'll see.

Lovin the needler and brute shot. The needles dont seem to track as well so good aim is required but it rocks indeed. The film feature is ace and all the matchmaking, grading/ranking shit is to be commended as always. Bungie am gods.

Proximity voice seems to have been toned down a lot. I pretty much have to be standing right next to my friends in order to hear them without team talk. I have it set- up with proximity through speakers, and team talk through headset, maybe I should set it to all through speakers?

Just because they planned it that way, doesn't mean its not broken. The games seem so quiet. Added for tactical depth eh? I'd think being able to talk to your team freely about strategy would be much more "tactical".

I really do hope they change the way Team Chat works. As of now, no one has said a word in the Team Matches I've been in so it's more of a free-for-all than a coordinated effort.

I am loving the BETA, but does anybody know if the final game will have AA? Also, no way this game is running at 30fps. Halo 2 had a better framerate. Those are my only 2 concerns.

I haven't noticed AA being much of an issue, do a lot of you guys have the sharpness on your TV's cranked? That could be causing some of it.

It's definately locked at 30 most of the time. I've seen a few people comlain about AA, but most have not issue. Seems like it's a TV-specific issue.

I get that you don't like it. And you can talk freely about strategy. All the Gaffer games I've been in have had plenty of coordination. It's really not that difficult to touch the pad with your thumb to open the channel.

Plus, it makes a really neat noise.

In the Halo 3 Public Beta, the default voice setting is that you can hear and talk to All. However, it is important to note that in ranked games, you can only communicate with Team and Party Members in-game. In ranked matches, this means you can’t hear smack talk or proximity voice from strangers. You will still be able to communicate with everyone, including non-team strangers in the post-game lobby, unless you change your settings to avoid that.
Remember this is a setting for the Beta and is subject to change. In unranked social matches, you can hear everyone, if you so wish. There are also several customizable voice settings. You can mute everyone, limit all chat to Team and Party (no matter which playlist you’re in) or, while actually in-game, mute an annoying individual (press the Back button, use the right stick to select the offending player, and press X to mute them instantly - with practice, it takes about a second).
Play around with these settings until you find a level of communication that you’re comfortable with and remember, these are the Beta options. They can and will change.

Is this right? If so what the hell, why do I need to push a dpad direction to talk to them?

I find the noise cheesy, but thats besides the point. Its not that its the hardest thing ever to touch the pad to talk, its just a inconvenience and a extra step that I don't see the purpose of.

If I recall correctly, the steps I took to get it working was:

Start from 360 Dashboard, go to Memory and clear the cache as described.
Turn off the system.
Turn system back on after 30 seconds or so, go into crackdown, accept the update.
Go to Play Halo 3 Beta button.
Say no to updating the beta.
At the title screen to Halo 3 beta, press the guide button and log out of your profile.
Press the guide button again and log back into my profile.
Accept the update.

I believe at that point is when it ended up working. Both times the Halo 3 beta loaded up I tried the Press up and Hold A thing that is listed on Bungie.net but I never got the confirmation box. Maybe I'm pressing it too early or too late or something.

Good luck! I'm hoping to play when I get home and hope I don't have to jump through these hoops again.

Edit: Now that the servers are probably a little less stressed I might even just try deleting the beta, clearing my cache, turning the system on and off and then redownloading the beta. I had to cancel and restart the download twice the first time.

Did not work :(

What are optimal settings for a Samsung DLP 720p/1080i tv? And should I have the dashboard settings set to 1080i or 720p?

Hey, that's what I have. I'm running mine at default sharpness/blacks through VGA at 720p and it looks fantastic.

Uhh, no. Some may notice it more than others but there's definitely aliasing going on. And it's not their tv.

If I had to hazard a guess, it was implemented to keep extraneous chatter down to a minimum. This way the guy singing into his microphone has one extra step to perform before he can annoy his team.

It's from the beta guide

Voice and Chat

For the duration of the Beta, the “Push to Talk” button, which more accurately is a “Tap To Talk” button, is on the D-pad – tap any direction to open a team broadcast channel (which will automatically shut off after a short period of silence). Remember, this feature can be overridden depending on other settings chosen in the UI or Matchmaking rules. Voice and chat settings are of course subject to the normal rules of Beta software – they are in development and may change before the game launches in fall.

Note: It is also important to remember that changes made in the Xbox 360 Guide override any game settings, including those of Halo 3. So if something seems amiss when you’re playing, make sure you don’t have a conflicting setting activated in the Guide.

It may seem complex, but in most real-life situations it’s very simple; players are going to pick a level of settings they’re happy with, and use those for the duration of their Halo 3 experience. We just want to give you the most options possible. One of the things we've tried to do deliberately is make better use of morons: We don’t ignore the fact that online gaming has its share of rude, immature and persnickety players. We’ve given the Halo 3 player a vast range of control over who they do and don’t have to hear or talk to in games. In short, you can turn a profanity spewing maroon into a silent, harmless opponent, with a quick press of a button. You can choose to hear everyone, just your friends, a mix of your Team and your Party, or enjoy blessed silence. The choice is yours. And if there’s just one bad apple, you can silence him or her with a button press too. It's designed to let you play more people, with fewer problems.

Wasn't that the whole point of the new easy way to mute someone? Because one guy is a jerk I can't hear the rest of my team freely?

Ok so then there is no point to not being able to talk to my teammates without pressing a direction in ranked matches.

I guess not many people here have played Halo 2 online. The communication has always been this way. The only difference is, in ranked games, you don't have to worry about somebody on their team hearing you.

why isn't the team voice chat always on?
And maybe when you press X you take it off for some seconds, thing which isn't even needed actually.

The yahoos win if you start making design decisions around them. Why should everyone be penalized? Besides, isn't that what the mute function is for? I'd much rather have to occasionally mute a player than to never be able to talk to my team without taking my thumb off the thumbstick.

My two cents: I love open mics for proximity chat. I can't tell you how many dummies I poached in Halo 2 because I heard them talking to themselves or their mom or whatever from around a corner.

I just played a big session with a bunch of friends, was so much fun! :lol Funnest multi-player game out there imo. No contest! I have improved a bit killed more but still got killed quite alot.

Thanks for the tips.

Just playing devils advocate. If you look at my second post up from that you'll see that I want them to change the feature.

Getting rid of tap-to-talk doesn't necessarily mean you won't be able to hear the other team via proximity chat.

Yeah, that map just doesn't seem to come up as much as it should. I like it lots.

It's not that we've never played Halo 2. It's that we've come to realize that there are better ways of doing things. We've played games where we can talk to our team freely. Don't get me wrong I love halo 2. It's online was pretty revolutionary at the time, but looking back now we realize things could be done differently/better.

yea when the full game launches I probably will be playing with my friends 80% of the time in unranked matches.

thats how I played halo2 lol... I think I played maybe 8 ranked matches... if that..

Can anyone answer these questions:

1. Will you keep your rank achievement in the beta when you own the full game?
2. Will there be clan support in the final version?

I'll admit by putting the button on the D-Pad, it's a pain in the ass compared to just hitting the shoulder button, but that's a very minor thing to bitch about. Is pushing a button that hard? It's adds strategy to the game like no other game does.

anyone else missing being able to hear the other team too? I mean the smack talk is severely reduced but the chance of overhearing anything strategic is gone now. maybe you can hear the other team when they use team talk, I havent checked, but I miss it none the less.

Too much Valhalla, not enough High Ground today.

Agreed. Valhalla is my least favorite of the three: it's gigantic (too big for most gametypes that matchmaking is setting us up with) and looks the worst imo.

1. Doubtful (I don't see why you would want to either)
2. I believe clan support is going to be a xbox live feature (ie integrated with a update). I remember seeing pictures of it. That way you could have a clan across the board. Could be wrong though.

1. Highly doubt it. That would be unfair to the gamers that didn't get into the beta and what if there are exploits found that get used and then they are fixed in the real game? That would be unfair as well.

2. There was clan support in H2 and everything else seems to be following precedent in multiplayer so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say yes.

I just don't see the strategic value. Could you explain it to me? How is pushing a button to talk more strategic than having free communication with your team?
