The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I mean obviously. People just abandoned it after a few weeks because the weapon balance was so off that it was unfun to play.

Seriously.

While it's great that you have an opinion about this, it's obvious that the majority of Halo 2 players seem to have no problem with...well just about anything in the game. If given the opportunity you would probably ruin the entire game with your "fixes".

Halo 2's weapons balance was perfection

needler...

I found them for the first time last night. Hit the start button at the title screen. The options are there, and you can toggle pages to customize your spartan as well.

Thanks I'll check it out when I get home.

I'm loving this beta. Reduced auto-aim, improved netcode (excellent for the most part), nerfed plasma pistol, what more could I ask for? Carbine needs to be nerfed, or the BR needs to be buffed, they should be equal to one another. Am I alone in thinking the spike grenades are bad? I'm also not digging the laser, I hit a warthog with it once and it did nothing except take down the drivers/gunners shields, hit it a second time and all it did was snipe the driver out. MEH.

Hey folks,

The "Loading Information..." errors are related to the ones we were working on last night. The engineers are working towards permanent solutions (rather than just throwing more servers at the problem), so they may persist for a little while. Rest assured that the problem is not being ignored, though.

As for the PTT thing, I'd love to write a Gamasutra scale article for you guys explaining the whys and hows, but I don't think it'd do much good (internet arguments, lawl.)

I will offer this, though: it's a very deliberate decision, factors heavily into Halo's solid network performance (which I think is a tradeoff most people appreciate, even if they don't realize it), and we are still carefully considering situations where we might enable open channel voice when network performance permits it (smaller team games, for example.) And that said, I'm disengaging from that discussion, it's much too acrimonious right now.

Cheers.

It's defacto sticky?
It hasn't left the front page - or the top half of it - since I first made it. Hell, the Oblivion thread was stickied three seperate times and this will blow past that one to be the largest ever by the end of the day.

And the Oblivion thread took over a year to get there, pushed by Shivering Isles and a small influx of PS3 owners picking it up.

I fear - and I mean really and truely fear - the official Halo 3 thread. (Which I'll make late August.)

And thanks for the update, ferrex.

Oh, ferrex, thanks for the reply.

I'm totally sure it's a technical thing before a gameplay thing, as you explained. I just am surprised people defend it as better because of annoying gamers or the like, and the whole attitude was just a bit funny. ;)

This makes sense and now I can understand the reasoning for having PTT.

Thanks.

Sounds like something for Bungie.net! OMG WRITE IT

I'm starting to think the AR is overpowered. Every weapon has it's use, sure enough, but the AR seems a bit too versatile. I'd probably think it more balanced if it weren't such a beast up close.

XBL is so overstressed it's hilarious.

Oh and vehicles still feel incredibly weak to me. The Banshee or whatever does almost nothing but call attention to yourself.

I think the assault rifle is greatly balanced. I agree about the vehicles though. They're incredibly vulnerable (which is probably better than being able to run people over at will).

They're basically just transport vehicles.

Okay, I've been playinga lot, and I have a few more complaints and comments. First the good:
1. After playing some awesome objective games on Valhalla, I'm really warming up to it.
2. The graphics are still really good, especially the animations, lighting and textures. The people who call it Halo 2 HD are still idiots.
3. Territories is awesome. Anyone who says otherwise deserves to have their 360 red-ring.
4. The sound is still awesome, even though I'm used to it by now.
5. I no longer feel like the Brute Shote is over-powered.
6. The needler is awesome. Holy crap. I actually look for it now. I love it.
7. In vain, I threw a plasma grenade at a mongoose that was trying to run my over, and it stuck to the wheel. As it drove off I could see it spin around on the wheel, then blow up. Cool.
8. I played a great game of Oddball that I won earlier. It was awesome. I haven't played it much in Halo 2, but it was so good that I'm starting to wish there was a playlist just for oddball.

The bad:
1. Am I crazy? No one else has talked about this, so I'm wondering if I'm the only one: The respawns on High Ground keep screwing me. Several times I've been spawned right in the open in the middle of a gunfight and been quickly killed by people with Carbines and BRs. This has happened several times, not just once, and I'm wondering if it has happened to any of you.
2. I'm don't remember if this has already been talked about (it probably has), but a few times in Team Training someone has quit, and it shows that screen with the scores for a LONG while, then sends me back to the main menu.
3. This isn't bad so much as a bug I thought I'd share, but I keep seeing people getting blown up and stuck in the ceiling, so they're just hanging there. It's sort of funny and creepy at the same time.
4. The grenades are under-powered. You practically have to stand on them to get killed by them. I'd like to see them get a damage boost.

Well, that's it. Again, it's great, I'm having a lot of fun, and there's much more good than bad, but I'm being really picky so I feel useful.

By the way, I won't be on tonight because I'll be watching The Office, but I hope to play against you guys tommorow.

I used to be in the 'screw Halo and its hype' crowd but I can't get enough of this Beta. Maybe it's the fact that I can actually win now that not everyone has hundreds of hours of playtime under their belt. If anyone wants to some invites then add me: Your Arsonist.

Yup, that happened to me and since I'm not a big fan of team matches I'm avoiding them altogether now to prevent having to go back to the dashboard, then booting up Crackdown and then Halo 3. Just takes too long to take the risk.

does anyone else still have the expired issue when logging in?

the 'workaround' doesn't work for me. if i wanna play, i have to log my father's profile in (US Profile) and then mine (Euro profile) and then it works.

LoL, I was blown up one time on High Ground while under one of the grated catwalks and body flew upwards and my fat Spartan Head shot through the grate and I hung by my neck. :( I said "ouch" :lol

Well, at least you can't lock-on to vehicles with the rockets anymore. (At least I couldn't last night.) That should make them more useful than they were in H2. Using any vehicles in Coag if the other team had rockets was a death wish.

anyone else having the problem where split screen does not use the whole screen? Its acting like I have a 4:3 display when in split screen (black bars on left and right side).

Using vga cable if that makes a diff

You should have a mod retitle this one after the beta closes to the official thread. Just to see how big it could get.

That explanation makes much more sense than the one we hearing from a certain Fox for the last few pages.

They did that on purpose so the aspect ratio was right, or something.

I disagree, you have to actually land the grenade pretty close to someone and then it does exactly what they should do, soften someone up. In Halo 2 it was practically impossible to escape a barrage of grenades being thrown at you, their damage and area of damage was so high.

And vehicles aren't weak, unless you're counting the Mongoose :P We had some games last night where nutter and ironclad just rode around in the hog all match and raped the other team :lol I think the Ghost on Snowbound is best used if you just stay far back from the action and soften the enemies up for your teammates to clean up really, the map isn't big enough to really own with it solo.

Thanks ferrex. Good to know it wasn't just for "strategies sake". I am willing to accept that, I'll take no lag.

It's still 16:9 not 4:3. Since the length of your screen is cut in two they have to cut the width by half aswell to maintain the aspect ratio.

No, you're right. The spawns on High Ground are awful in Team Slayer games. Awful to the point where it has cost me games because one moment, the entire team will switch to spawning behind you inside the base, then once they're dead, they're spawning behind you outside the gate again. It's pretty ridiculous.

Also, in regular Slayer games, it's not uncommon to start the match and get killed within the opening moments because a lot of times you spawn like 10 feet away from someone else in the open.. it happens a lot in the garage inside the base.

All this talk about weak grenades...
I think its just the brute spiker grenades that feel a little underpowered, but they make for easier sticks. I bet if they got a small damage bump people wouldn't complain, there a little tricky to use still.

Additionaly, noone is using the warthog/ghost anymore! Maybe it just has to be a guas-hog for anyone to care? And the ghost needs a damage boost, the ar just takes it apart! That I fully endorse.

That reminds me, Tieno and I were playing a miserable game of One Bomb on Valhalla and I was defending and blew someone up, and he was hanging from the ceiling, so I just sad there and shot the corpse and stuff. The only good part of that drubbing. :)

The only way I would agree with that is if grenades weren't so plentiful.

Anyone wish that the beta would've had at least one map from Halo 2?

I saw zanzibar in the leak, now all i want is a remixed lockout.
The rest can be all new maps! Out with the old!

edit:for the record, lockout may be the best multi-map of all time.

Sullichin said:
I think that's a feature of his TV.

As for H2 maps I'd want remixed for 3:

Lockout
Midship
Zanzibar (check)

that's it.
Well there's JubJub for Lockout. It's not a remake, but Frankie keeps praising it as Lockout's sucessor like Valhalla is Coagulation's sucessor.

anyone have any guides for improving your live bandwith / network conditions ?

I really feel like I'm missing conversations often, and my game is def. lagged behind a bit.
Sometimes I can't join up with some friends (router issues I'm guessing). I'm currently wireless w/adaptor

Thank god. I was afraid I was the only one, and you'd all call me crazy. Yeah, it's so bad that I now veto High Ground (which is a great map) when it comes up in Team Slayer.

I love terrorizing people on Snowbound with the Ghost, but nobody uses the 'hog on Valhalla, and I don't understand why. I'm pretty happy with the Ghost.
As for the grenades, I do agree that the brute spiker is pretty weak, but easy to stick. The problem is, if you use it, if you don't stick the guy there's no way you'll kill him.

I like the vehicles. I have no problem with them. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about the 'nades. I didn't have a problem with the H2 grenades and I like how powerful they are, and feel that they aren't incredibly hard to avoid. I mean, if you're in a small room and you throw a grenade in there and there's a guy in there, it should kill them, IMO.

I wonder if Last Resort will show up in the Beta before it finishes. The map looked pretty decent for playing in the leaked video, so I'm hoping Bungie will update the Beta with BTB and this, and finish it off with a BANG.

Too much but still one can dream XD
