The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I think that is a very deliberate design decision; it's actually one of my favorite changes. It makes the battle inside the ring feel like a separate arena, and adds an element of risk for those outside as you can't see perfectly to the fight within. Crazy King on Valhalla is supremely awesome fun.

Side note: I love the little "hill" generators on the ground. You can see the scattered all over the level, so at least you know the possible hill locations from them. It's nice touch.

I agree with it being deliberate. I guess it just feels a little more one sided for the team holding the hill since if you are in the hill you can't really see out of it. You don't know when people are coming and they can just shoot from a far distance and blow you away.
I do like the idea of it being shield style with an open top so people can toss grenades but can't shoot you directly...that might be cool.

Yeah I really like that you feel a little clastrophobic when you are inside the hill, but I really, really don't like how the hill changes to blue if your own team has and red if the other team has it. If they are not gonna have it switch to the colour of the team that is in control then make it red and green or something (go/stop). Cause the way it is now makes zero sense.

Last night was kinda laggy for me, which was a first; had to call it quits early because of it. Anyone else experience this? I'm on the west coast if it makes any difference.

last night was terrible for me, i was lagging nearly every game I was in.
today seems good so far though

Helps show which team has control of the hill.

I believe the colors match the color of the team holding the hill. I could be wrong about that though but I'm pretty sure.

I hate that ring. Make the ring simple and transparent like Annex in Gears of War. If you drop a bubble shield in that ring you can't see shit even more. The only modes i like right now are Team Slayer, CTF and Territories (on Valhalla). Snowbound and High Ground are too small for Territories.

yea, I like it.

also, it is a bit easier to see in than it is to see out so I think attackers have a slight advantage

Vision wise it maybe slightly easier to see in than out but as the hill holder you are in a much more vulnurable position. I think I'd be more for being able to see out but not be able to see in.

They don't. When your team has the hill the hill is blue. When the other team has the hill it is red. But if you are on the red team and your running up the hill and see red you will assume your team has it. But they don't

Come on JdFoX187 you have to agree with me on that.

It adds protections and vulnerabilities for both teams. It's more difficult to strike from in or out of the hills at long range, so the fight is going to happen at close quarters much more often.

Similar thing with the VIP - the icon over the head of the enemy VIP is the same color as the team you are on. I was on Red and thought the red indicator meant he was my team's VIP. I died several times by walking up to him to protect him (underground the overshield obscures their armor color, plus I'm red/green colorblind).

Yeah it's odd when you are underground and everyone just looks dark green. That has screwed me up quite a bit.

"Wait a minute you were just red. How did you change colours?" :lol

I'm a betrayal machine down in the cave when I'm VIP. If you're coming down the tunnel, you're eating spikes.

Not really. In the heat of battle, I usually don't pay much attention to what's what. I see my guys in the hill, I know we're taking it. I usually don't even bother with the hill, I just try to keep the other guys out of it. But I can see where that can cause some confusion for people.

The problem is if you take out the opaque ring you are still in a more vulnerable position as the hill holder. Adding the ring just makes you that much more vulnerable.

I'm in Oregon and had no issues.

I'm in Oregon as well, and I have no issues whatsoever. My only issue so far is waiting for a game; the beta seems to have trouble finding something sometimes. It's a minor issue, but definitely one worth mentioning. Also, sometimes when it does find a game it drops all the players and kicks me back out to the matchmaking service. It's really irritating. It's also really strange that the game keeps telling me there are only 1000 people online at all times. I find that... hard to believe.

As for the beta itself, I'm finding that it's absolutely full of "OMG" moments. I was just playing a game of team slayer, in which I had the most amazing Halo moment I think I've ever had. I was all by myself in Valhalla, on the far right/left side of the map near the downed plane. I came around on the wall side, only to see that there are THREE reds coming straight for me. I panic. I jump on the plane, where one engages me from the front. I pop him a couple times with the battle rifle, and smack him in the face. He drops. I then proceed to run over a trip mine. I immediately drop it. I get dropped from behind. They both run over the trip mine. My trip mine then kills BOTH of them, from beyond the grave. Amazing. :D

Couple of things though

-What happened to vehicle jacking? Is it out completely? If so, why?
-Are we going to have an option to have normal teamspeak in the retail, meaning, not having to hold the dpad?

I've jacked quite a few vehicles. Holding right bumper seems to do the trick. I've never seen an icon for jacking it though, I just hold right bumper and try not to get hit head on and it seems to work.

-Nothing. It's in.
-Don't know.

At one point I helped him take out my own team (Betrayal! Betrayal!), only to have him turn around a plug me with the shotty. Where's the gratitude?!

I only played 1 VIP game I guess I just noticed where my team was going and followed them and ended up in the firefight. I don't know why they would go with this type of scheme.

Yeah I just asked Luke he said it's still there. I must not have ever been in the right spot yet cause I'm always trying to jack ghosts on Snowbound.

Spiff you available for some games right now?

:lol Touche!

I don't bother with the hill because my skills are better put to use trying to hold people out o fit as long as possible. It's funny because I'll usually have the most hills in KotH, but there'll be somebody else with hardly any kills, a bunch of deaths and a lot of time will get MVP. Oh well, the win is what matters.

I had the most awesome team slayer match-up on Valhalla last night. All I would do is spawn, grab a trip-mine and dual SMGs, then man-cannon my way to the center with guns blazing.

I laid trip-mines EVERYWHERE. I was basically shouting at my team the whole time - "THERE'S A TRIP-MINE OVER IN THE RIGHT TREES. THERE'S A TRIP-MINE ON THE TOP OF THE BIG HILL, AND ANOTHER ON THE LEFTHAND SIDE OF THE FAR BASE" :lol :lol :lol etc etc etc.

I think I ended up losing like 5 points from betrayals but I still led my team in points at the end.

The BEST though was when I laid this mine, then promptly died. So I'm watching the action by my corpse, and an enemy-filled hog stops RIGHT beside the mine, not tripping it. So a mongoose with MY teammates comes barreling in and sets off the mine, blowing up both vehicles. I killed 5 of the 7 other players in the game with that one mine :lol :lol :lol

1) What urk said. It's in, and it's awesome. Hold right bumper to board.
2) Here's what ferrex (who works for Bungie) said no the matter:

As for the PTT [push to talk] thing, I'd love to write a Gamasutra scale article for you guys explaining the whys and hows, but I don't think it'd do much good (internet arguments, lawl.)

I will offer this, though: it's a very deliberate decision, factors heavily into Halo's solid network performance (which I think is a tradeoff most people appreciate, even if they don't realize it), and we are still carefully considering situations where we might enable open channel voice when network performance permits it (smaller team games, for example.) And that said, I'm disengaging from that discussion, it's much too acrimonious right now.

Cheers.

It IS the most amazing thing ever. EVERY time I've been GhostJacked on the way out I can always hear the guy doing it yell "HOLY SHIT!", fading into the harsh, sunlit air.

Me and my friend Danny were playing last night and we were getting ranks pretty quickly but right after that he had his friend join the party who wasn't very good at Halo and we lost like 6 games straight, teamwork is ultra important in Team Slayer if you're team is of average skill level i guess

how often does the trip mine respawn?

I hope you were smart enough to save that film and upload it to your file share...

They don't spawn super-quickly (at the same rate as guns), but I made it my sole mission that map to lay out as many mines as I could. Killing enemies with guns was incidental :)

So I'd grab a mine, man-cannon to the center, lay it, then hoof it to the far base to grab THEIR mine.

Then... repeat as necessary :)

Edit: Tieno, I did save the video, but I haven't rewatched it or uploaded it yet. I would imagine it won't be as cool to review because many, many of my kills happened off-screen. So while IN the game it was awesome to see the deaths wrack up from mines, in a replay I would imagine it wouldn't be as cool. Plus, you won't hear me shouting mine locations to my team the whole time.

The only REALLY cool bit is probably the mongoose/warthog explosion... so I'll probably just youtube it so people don't have to watch 5min just to see it.

The mine is awesome. On the Valhalla Assault game I've got uploaded, we landed a last-second first round point thanks to Vociferous' strategy. I grabbed the bomb and he snagged the mine, we loaded up a desperation 'Goose and met another team mate at the base. We barely survived a missed Spartan Laser blast on the way over - hot damn is it exhilarating when that thing just barely misses - and took out the defender in the arming zone. Voc drops the mine right on the bomb, and I try to turn and defend from two guys pouring in the side. I drop, they head to the bomb.....BOOM - Voc gets a double kill.

The other guy we met comes in from the back to guard the bomb FTW.

The bottom half of the round, I get my Stick of Glory, followed by pure Missle Pod ownage. I was ****ing giddy after that game.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but has there been any word on the 6v6 and double team playlist updates?

I don't think they're going to do that. They're trying really hard to be just like Gears, only they added some jaggies and color and some other stuff like that to try and one up CliffyB. I wouldn't doubt it if Luke shows up in an interview with frosted tips and a saucy, come hither pout pasted over his lips.

My friend came over last night and we played several games split-screen. We only had lag on one of our games, the rest were all pretty smooth.

I saved one of our matches. When I played back the movie, it was also split-screen. However, once during the match I went to check the status screen by pressing start (or back) and then once I came back to the movie my POV was playing on BOTH SCREENS. My friend's POV was just gone. I could never get this fixed unless I started over.

Also, there are NO pistols at all in the beta, right? I haven't seen any.
