The Halo 3 Beta Thread

So Bungie wants us to find glitches and exploits right? What are the chances they'll let us run around in the maps solo or with a friend to find them? I'd really appreciate an option for some 1 on 1 and it would be way easier to find glitches and exploits that way.

Yeah the Spartan Laser is fine. You only get 5 shots with it to begin with. And also I mentioned before that the Brute Shot was still lame. The more I've used it, the better I've got with it. I just had to retrain myself to shoot it differently from Halo 2. It really has improved.

Quick question- Any word on why the screen is split horizontally instead of vertically? I haven't seen anything about it, but it was probably in this thread.
So that both players still get a 16:9 view.

I just got my first EVER ranked win(in any game) in a single player deathmatch.

25 for me, 20 for the second person. I don't even know whats going on. That was the most fun I've had in a videogame in a long time. Wow. When you win this game is so amazing it almost hurts.

Such a different dynamic when you're playing alone though. Kinda miss having gowans or fatal on the ol' team.

Link to the game for those few of you who care: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=1465471&player=QVT
Got my first win also last night. I was down like 3-4 and went on a spree and pulled out the victoly! Loved every minute of it and was my first replay saved, awesome feature! This game win own tonz of souls come Sept 25th. Lots of jobs and school comprimised i predict.

Damn OverHeat, you've got to be playing Halo 3 straight - 293 games in only 3 days? Holy CRAP!

I've been playing for a week now, and I've only gotten 169 games... all due to how damn busy university has been lately, not to mention busy weekends as well...

I was getting lots of lag last night/into early morning which pretty much killed my last 6 or 7 matches of the night - they hurt the most in Rockets, where it's bad enough that rockets travel slowly... so I had to call it quits... sigh...

The brute shot is an extremely powerful weapon, I've had shots go over my head and hit behind me and the screen shook, it completely disorientated me for a second or two.

Edit: I think the laser should be toned down to 4 shots personally, the thing is just so powerful and easy to use.

My main complaint with the beta is Valhala. That map NEEDS BR spawn. I'm sick of spawning out in the middle with my AR and getting owned by some guy with a BR with no defense. That and the rocket shots seem to be a little laggier than H2, but maybe that was just in the one game I got to use it in.

The carbine needs toning down, here's my idea:
They should make the carbine do heavy shield damage (which it currently does) but low physical damage (like a plasma rifle) so as long as you're getting headshots it kills just as fast but it becomes weak when shooting their un-shielded bodies.

There are Battle Rifles and other weapons propped up all over the middle of the map aren't there?

Yeah that looks like you had a great game man. The replay feature is great, so awesome to see the ownage dealt out.

On a related note, me, the brits and Dan got absolutly detroyed by a group of 15's(we're all 5-6) and went on a 6 match losing streak as a result. Those people broke our very souls.

I suck at team play but its so much more fun(when winning at least) than solo unless solo is against people you know, but then I'm not as great. ****ing insane.

Hell yes, that thing is ridiculous. I like how in the previews of the game they're all "The laser has a laser pointer on it so only stupid people who don't dodge it will get hit!" but in reality it's almost impossible to dodge the shot if the other guy is a decent aim. They need to add some sort of disadvantage to the laser.

The Spartan Laser is indeed a bit overpowered - it doesn't have enough weaknesses.

No matter where you hit the enemy with the laser it's a guaranteed one shot kill. It's impossible to dodge the shots and it works great at both close range (no splash damage) and long range (scope/zoom). Unlike other heavy weapons it doesn't slow down your movement at all (and still allows you to melee).

I think it should be lowered from five shots to four and be a bit more difficult to aim.

Making the Spartan Laser one of the "big" weapons makes sense. Hell I'd like to see it set up as a turret or even as a warthog weapon, that would make it much harder to totally dominate with it.

yeah they could do that or just make it a little longer to charge it up and a little longer to recharge.

Eh, I'm still on the fence. Yeah, if you're out in the open, there's a good chance you won't be able to dodge it, and you're going to eat redhot death. But I've killed plenty of people just after they let loose with it, while they're trying to charge it in that three second window, which may as well be an eternity if you're closing in on them.

The only thing that I can think of that Bungie could do to tweak it without stripping away the fun factor would be to add a half second or maybe tighten the spread on it from longer range. It does seem to cut a pretty wide swath used from decent range.

As it is though, it's not a game breaker or anything like that and I can only imaging that Lazers matches are going to be a riot.

Here's a suggestion.

Playing King of the Hill is a little too hectic, as it involes no strategy, other than tossing grenades at the goal whenever you spawn, sitting there for a second, then getting killed.

I think if they made the field have the same properties as the bubble shield, th emode would need more strategy. It would allow a team to defend their position. The top is still open, so grenades can still be lobbed in.

Cause at this state, its just a big mess.

Sean said:

Thats because people run around aimlessly on the maps and dont think about the laser until their cheeks get toasted from it. then they complain about its strength.

It is a Power Weapon that must be accounted for at all times. Who has it? Where is it? When was it dropped, when does it spawn?

Once you're thinking about said things, you'd be surprised how easy the guy with it is to take down.

That's actually a really interesting idea. They'd need to up the time to win on it though, but I think they need to do that anyway. They'd probably need to widen the area contained inside the shield too.

Bubble Hill.

I hope games start penalizing people a lot for quitting because now it's just getting ****ing ridiculous. 3 out of the 5 last games I played at least 2 people quit in each game.

How would they do that? I mean, I've played with plenty of people who dropped unintentionally for one reason or another. It would suck for them to get penalized because their power went out or because the Beta was jacked by Crackdown or whatever.

Maybe they could do the opposite and give a reward to players who end up on the shorthanded team. Maybe no lost rank points if your shorthanded. You could still hand out points to the victors, but not take them away from the losing team if they played through a majority of the match with a disadvantage.

track disconnects, give a ratio. When you ratio drops below X, restrict the gametypes you can play. When it drops below Y, each "Quit" prompts a reboot of the xbox.

That can be abused, someone will quit just before the end if there team is losing.

There has to be a way to tell the game if you quit or the console got powered down somehow, some games still punish you for a powercut and tbh thats not often is it, I would prefer that.

Just grabbed the Xbox wireless headset microphone. This is a real must for Halo 3 players. Very clear sound, lightweight and doesn't distrub like the wire does. Plus does not break up. Loving it. Only negative is that mute is now on your ear which is not all that convenient while playing, so I need to cut down on shouting while I die.

Give feedback to quitters. I always do. There is an option under Game Behaviour called Quitting. I guess it counts for something.

You have to tap the d-pad to talk in Halo 3 anyway.

That's true, but the power going out is not something that happens all the time. If quitting is not penalized it'll just make people quit out of every match which is extremely annoying.

I like your idea of the players who stay in the match not losing rank points. Seems like the most fair solution to everyone.

I heard/read that this has super feedback issues.

everyone else can hear everything that is going on in your life on your side of the microphone. its too sensitive

Blim could you maybe post one of my vids if I upload it? we dont stay alive as long as Ivy and Fuji did but I dance that damn warthog around the laser hill and then someone launches an exploding barrell on the man cannon and it lands right next to us and sends us into a spinning fury. only the initial warthog run is worth watching so it could be editing and not be such a huge file.

Im at work right now so I cant check but I may have already shared it. gamertag is hgplayer1 if anyone wants to watch it.

That's not a bad idea. A matrix similar to the feedback system, but automated and based on dropped matched. Too many DNF's and you get put in the shallow end of the pool with all the other people who bail out on games when they start to lose.

That's why I qualified it with "the majority of a match." You make it so the reward only comes if you legitimately played shorthanded for a significant duration, not a few seconds. You could even weight the points adjustment based on how much time you spent down and how many players total your team was short.

I played a VIP match on Valhala yesterday with some people double my rank and we were short for almost the entire round. I was playing really well, really smart, totally against my tendencies, and we pulled it out. It was awesome. Great teamwork to lure the other team's VIP out and I got two melee kills on him. On that map, that's tough to do, especially considering these guys weren't joke players.

It does. You can always tell who has one because it sounds like they are riding in a helicopter.

Man, I don't even know. It all just blurred together since I was watching the Suns/Spurs game at the same time. The only thing I remember off the top of my head was the Valhalla grenade kill that wiped out the entire team (in the quit. finding host. loading. loading. loading. gtfo match) Malarky took full credit for, although I was right next to him and we were both lobbing grenades over the hill.

Oh and the "Hey you guys, we should use the Warthog it'll be much easier" Valhalla Territory match where the "other" dude and myself hopped in the 'Hog and got owned in like 5 seconds.

Anyway, that last match makes me want to give up Halo* though. God damn... :lol :( Once we actually lost an Oddbawl match, you knew it was gonna be downhill from there.

PS. "Odd...bawl.. Play.. bawl" is my new favorite announcer speak of all time. :lol

...and my K/D ratio dropped to a 2.28-ish number. WTF Snake!? Snnnaaaaaaaaakkkke!

the people I play with that quit are usually the people that quit just before the end so the stats don't get added. those are the people that really get under my skin, even more than so than the people who quit in the middle of the game.

that's a good idea for the people who quit in the middle of the match or beginning but what about the people who quit just before the game ends? I personally think each time they quit just before the end, they should drop half a level.

I do so every time also, but I don't think the feedback system really works.

So what happens when two of your teammates drop out? You supposed to stay there and get your ass handed to you for another nine minutes? Sorry, but I'm leaving in that situation every time.

Edit: Oh, this has already been discussed. n/m

I'll take a look.

I quit most of the time if half the enemy team quits in team games, it would be unfair otherwise. And today I've quit 2 times because I had to go to the bathroom in the middle of a Shotty Snipers game:lol

Everyone was hiding and it was going on forever...

What is Bungies policy on this?

I had a VIP match the other day where the enemy team consisted of just their VIP, all his teammates left and we were still 4 people. If I quit in a situation like that and get bad feedback it would be quite unfair.

No policy that I know of and you're probably not going to get bad feedback in that situation. Your own team will probably go on to win, unless they really, really suck, and in that case, they probably can't even find the feedback feature anyway.

I usually won't quit out in the situation, but I'm not going to go for power weapons and play very hard either. It just feels shitty. I especially hate players that get a man advantage and then proceed to snag all the power weapons, camp the spawn, and then talk shit in postgame. Utter garbage.

I concur. Hasn't happened so much in beta though. Actually, I haven't come across too many retards. A couple of people have killed my guest to get his sniper, and there's the occasional shit talker every five matches or so, but that's all. I'm very happy about it. It'll change once the game comes out though.
