The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I concur. Hasn't happened so much in beta though. Actually, I haven't come across too many retards. A couple of people have killed my guest to get his sniper, and there's the occasional shit talker every five matches or so, but that's all. I'm very happy about it. It'll change once the game comes out though.

It's even more annoying when they barely pull off the win.

Yeah, the beta has been pretty clean. Hell, it was pristine during F&F. Every match, and I mean every single one, ended with "good games" and "so, what does everybody thinks." It's still much better than it is in the majority of Live games, but yeah, I'm sure once the retail release is out, it'll be nasty in non-custom matches.

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=1191772&player=Urk the Red

These guys, the TT clan, or whatever, talked shit the entire match. When I ran over their carcasses, I could hear them ridiculing the other players on my team for their British accents. They were mocking in the post game too, putting on crummy Cockney impressions and yelling and whatnot.

Douchebags.

They said that we'll start fresh and I think it's better that way, maybe I can win a few games again this fall because right now it's too hard.

Anyone have any tips to make the headset more loose? It cramps my head and gives me headaches. >.<

Or any alternative headsets?

I hope games start penalizing people a lot for quitting because now it's just getting ****ing ridiculous. 3 out of the 5 last games I played at least 2 people quit in each game.

I cant ****ing help but quit because out of the 14 games ive played, the beta crashed 11 times.

I really doubt that many people give a shit out their rankings in a beta that will only last 3 weeks.

And besides the scores & DNFs all get logged so i dont see the benefit.

Yeah, extend it all the way out, unless you have a monster head, you should be able to get it pretty loose.

I used to have a plantronics set and it was pretty nice. There are plenty of options to choose from. Do a google search to see reviews.

everyone else can hear everything that is going on in your life on your side of the microphone. its too sensitive
I don't have those problems (yet). I tested it and it only outputs sound when I'm speaking.
Once had the 'chop chop' noise, but turned it off/on and it was gone.

Wow.

Great games overall. Gonna hit us with any stats/moments, raYne ol' buddy ol' pal?

Oh yeah! Just remembered that one Highground 1-flag CTF game we had that went down to the wire. There weren't any real stand out moments, but that was definitely the best game I've been in since I've been on the Beta. Wish I would've saved it.

They scored quick the first time when 3 people served as distraction while the fourth grabbed the invisibility and rocket launcher, snuck into the base and killed all our flag guards. :/ Then they used our own Mongoose to get the flag to the beach. *sobs*
Then we bumrushed 'em the next round, grabbed the flag fairly quick and fought tooth and nail to get it to the beach. "Im down, grab the flag! Run RUN!" lol.

Then the defense (uh uh) came out the next round and they just barely got the flag to the base gates and couldn't advance any further. Steelers defense ftw! After that, the last round was the best round ever made. A long-ass battle where we weren't making any real advancement and it was pretty much a stalemate. A few minutes left and someone suggested we calm down and group up for the final push.

So we meet outside the base gates and fight our way in. The three of you rush the gates and I circle around the right, through the tunnel and grab the flag. I make it about half way out the base before I get killed. Then Malarky grabs it and takes it just past the bunker outside, and he bites it. Then it's a standoff with everyone fighting each other. We get them down to two people and we have three left. One of the two drops the bubble shield blocking the route to the flag and they dash inside it. One of us, I want to say Vyse, but I'm not sure if it was Snake come walking up to the bubble shield with the Chaingun in hand and lets loose 20 rounds into the shield. I know for a fact they were like "Fuuuuuuuawk!" :lol

It's a standoff and everything gets quiet and no one's moving. The shield drops, the chaingunner opens up on the once shielded defenders and so do we. They get ripped apart in like 5 seconds!

After that, I don't even know. I know I had the flag at one point, but it was just gunfire, grenades exploding, bodies flying everywhere. Basically, the shit hit the fan. I died, someone else grabbed the flag and advanced, they died. Then I grabbed it again and a Mongoose comes flying down to the beach. I drop the flag, take on the driver/passenger and die again like 10 feet from the drop point. The announcer says "10 seconds left" But then I spawn too far from the action and didn't see what happened at the end. All I know is that someone planted the flag with like 1-2 seconds to spare.

Round Over Bitches!

really?.....really?

then give me a good reason as to why people would quit just before they go to the post-game lobby other than 'protecting' their stats; guess which team the people are on who quits...the losing team. coincidence? methinks not.

I hate quitters. just play the damn game out. youre going to play a billion more times anyway why not just have as much fun as you can in the game youre in and not quit like a little punk?

Believe me I understand the feeling of getting absolutely owned in a game but I never quit. thats not true either. Ive quit when my three other team mates quit right after the match started. if theres anyone else left with me though I stick it out. also Ive quit out of games where people were cheating in Halo2. what I dont get is when its 4 on 4 and 1 guy on one team quits and then another guy on that team quits. 3 on 4 is almost an advantage for good players. I cant tell you how many times Ive been in matches where the team with only 3 people wins.

people that quit because they dont like the game type of map are punks though. I hate that in the beta we can veto matches. people already hate all game modes and maps. big surprise! if theres one thing I loved about Halo right off the bat it was the different game types.

I had a post before about headsets but was crushed by this juggernaut of a thread. I picked up this headset here (not being a fan of the in the ear headsets). But for Halo 3 and the man hours I will be playing with it, I had to ditch the awful 360 stock headset once and for all. While I didn't have alot of choices I think I picked the best one for the money.

It is louder than the 360 stock, clearer audio, better feel, and people have told me I sound much clearer too. Plantronics is a great company too. I had their last headset for XBOX, only reason I didn't use it for 360 was lack of volume control. Only minor complaint I guess is color choice, but it only a color and it still looks slick with black gloss.

When escorting the flag to the beach, you don't need to stick close to the carrier, as you would see Secret Servicemen, standing shoulder to shoulder with a diplomat in a foreign country. You should also snag the rockets when you run past them, especially if you are going to hug the right rock wall and use the small tunnel as cover. Otherwise, I'm going to pick it up and kill your entire team when you are three steps away from tying the game, one all. el oh el

A question about the beta, is it anything like halo 2 where if the host quits the game has to pause and reconfigure? so many quitters in halo 2 that screen pisses me off to no end.

Yeah, it'll dump into the scoreboard and show a loading status.

Hm, I really don't want an over the head mic as it gets too overbearing after a few hours of gaming for me. =/ How are the in ear series? I'm afraid of wobblyness like previous in ear designs.

I think they really should remove kill count and ratio from objective-based games in ranked Skirmish. Way too many people don't give a damn about the objective and just run around uncoordinated killing people to get count higher.

They should make it so that they tally the stuff you do in objective games too (hill control, flag stealing, capturing, bomb arming, etc), like they do with the kills, death and k/d ratio. Now the only thing you can really brag about is your k, d and k/d ratio.

I'm getting back into my Halo "groove" though, so I'm hoping I can break 1.0 soon. Haven't played as much as I've wanted to, especially considering I've had the beta since May 11th. It's weekend and I've managed to become sick, too, so I don't know if I'll be up for playing - though it's so tempting. Ugh, screw being sick.

As for the Spartan Laser, I have to say that I think it's really balanced right now. When I see people pick it up and try to use it as their main weapon against both vehicles and individual Spartans, they usually last a lot less longer than they would if they kept it as their secondary, use it against vehicles, and use it as an anti-Spartan weapon only when they get a good drop on someone.

I also find the Needler, Sniper, or dual Spikers provide for a great counter-Laser. The reason I think some people are finding it overpowered right now is because on Valhalla, you really have to get near cover to have it (cover) readily available, and most people aren't used to doing that yet. There are lots of rocks and hills to jump behind when you see the red line, but most people just use the central Mancannon to run right into enemies, who have seen you on the Mancannon, flying toward them, and have already charged up the Laser.

On Snowbound and High Ground, it's actually really easy to get behind or to the side of an enemy carrying the Laser to eliminate them with any weapon/grenade combo. I'm not saying that the weapon isn't powerful, but it's definitely controllable and feels balanced so far.

The entire game feels balanced, I just can't believe it. Everything feels so tuned and refined, I never mind going into a battle with whatever weapon I'm using, and I often decide to just go with my Assault Rifle, rather than weapon-hunt and waste time when the AR and grenade combination is just as deadly as some other weapons and combinations. I'm not saying it's perfect - I'm sure there's tuning to be done and more fixes to be made as we play through the next couple of weeks, when Big Team Battle comes into play, and as people get better, but for right now, I definitely feel completely happy with the current balance.

Just want to give much praise to High Ground, 1 Flag CTF - definitely the best games I've had in Halo 3, definitely comparable to the epic games I've had countless times on Zanzibar, where things can turn into chaotic, fast-paced, insane battles to determine the outcome. Teamwork is absolutely key here - if you don't have it and the other team does, you are done for. Bubble shield, portable gravity lift, and turret tactics - plus everything else on that level, including regular grenade and Assault Rifle battles - make for some really epic moments. I can't get enough of it!

Look at my Kill/Death Ratio. Do I get a free copy of Halo 3? Or a No Prize? :D

Agreed. And I still can't get used to the way frags and stickies are now--feels slower and with a lot less punch for some reason./

Indeed. Garnett heaped praise on High Ground in the latest 1up Yours podcast, and I was glad to hear someone calling it out. He described it as a very sophisticated map - and it is. At it's heart the map is very simple - a beach, a wall and a base. But the sheer number of routes through that base, the meticulously calculated sight-lines to the flag, the weapon placement....it's incredibly sharp level design. Giving the defending team a Mongoose is one of Bungie's best design decisions, as that gives the defenders a shot at getting back into the fight when the flag is a ways toward the beach. raYne's awesome story above is a great example of that. It's a brilliant map.

I feel ok with the carbine for now. Maybe I'll change my opinion later, but I agree with you about the frag and stickes. I don't feel like they're nearly as useful as they used to be. Although, I'd rather them be like this then what the were in the later part of the Halo 2 years when they were way too powerful.

WTF! My DSL modem keeps freaking out whenever I jump into a game this morning. I've won three games because my modem keeps timing out like a standby or something. It is only happening when I play the game though. Otherwise it seems to be working fine.

Guess Who LOVES Territories Now?

ME!!

I was all kinds of trepidatious about this mode when I first played but now I ****ing love the shit out of it! Once you figure out how to play and how the rules work it is SO much fun on both offense and defense. Nothing is more satisfying than just slapping the territory out of someone's mouth, watching as they trundle back from their base in some rag tag attempt to get the better of you and then WHABAM do it again. And offense, oh man. Get a good strategy going and it is so dope. Big Team Territories could end up being the most fun thing that has ever happened in our lifetimes.

That's happened to me as well. My connection has just randomly dropped while playing and it ONLY happens while playing the beta.

So where do we actually report bugs in this beta? Or is this not a "real" beta? :D

Stinkles!! Halo is destroying my DSL :(

I had a horrible night in H3 last night...

Played about 17 games, won only 2 (all ranked slayer)

There were quite a few games I finished in 6th, too.

My ratio is now nearly 1:1, it was 1 death : 1.5 kills before :(

People are using Zone alarm to drop you from the game. I've played games where people on the other team were saying they found out how to force host and use zone alarm to cheat. The host connects his 360 via ICS then one by one limits how much upload each person from the other team gets.

I really hope Bungie can some how over come this, but I'm starting to fear that even in the final game we will see it pop up due to the P2P nature of the game. :(

Giving the defenders a mongoose is a double edged sword for the defenders, and is something I've exploited before. I broke into the base with a guy in a 1 flag ctf game planning to simply open the gate. We did, and found that we were able to make our way to the flag without dying. He grabbed the flag, but I was still on foot, so I stole their mongoose and we drove back for the cap. The mongoose being so close to the flag definitely gives defenders something to think about and gives the attacking team more options. It really is AWESOME level design though as it gives another object to fight over that depends wholly on how the match starts and whether the attacking team brings the goose right away.

Yea I do certainly feel there are some balance issues.

A completely fair and level fight between Carbine and the Rifle (the zooming, 3 shot burst gun), the Carbine will ALWAYS win.

The brute shot is only decent because it flings people around too, the carbine out-damages it.

The grenades are a bit underpowered, I've hit people with 2 direct frags (they were standing on them) and they didn't even die. They're only useful for getting people you know you'll hit and you've already done damage to, or you're able to hit immediately afterward.

Really? This happened in two games in a row and I ended up with first place. Everyone else got a DNF.

I'd like grenades to be pumped up slightly too, but I can't help but feel that's just because they were my favourite (and probably my best) weapons in Halo 2. I think more than that I want the frags to have the same light skipping-stone feel they did in 2. rockets could be slightly faster, I suppose. I think the rockets-only games are my least favourite in the beta.

but yeah, two players carrying Carbines who can aim can carve up Snowbound, it's not even funny. keep the rate of fire, but either make the clip smaller or make them do less damage, or make them slightly more erratic to aim. how they were in Halo 2 vs the BR was perfect.

also, I cannot applaud the lessening of autoaim in this game enough. weirdly, I feel like it's made me better, or else it's just made other players worse. the sniper in particular seems to make a lot more sense with its hit detection now. or else Halo 3's netcode is just considerably more solid than 2's and the American ping advantage lessened. either way, I actually feel like it's fair now (also awesome is the decreased rate of fire), whereas in Halo 2 I'd curse it. same deal with the shotgun, which I will actually pick up now. if you were European in 2 it was effectively a lottery if you didn't have host.

If your NAT settings say Open then I'd put those two games down as someone trying to manipulate the bandwidth.

What happened in the games I played was:

One of the members of the other team is in red, while everyone on our side are switching between red and yellow. The rest of the players on the other team have full green connections.

If this was the final game I'd be really upset at the moment, but I'm happy because these idiots are giving Bungie all the data they need to stop it in its tracks.

Were you playing publicly or with ppl on your friends list? I find that if I go by myself in matchmaking everything just loses control and there's no cooperation with teams. (unless you meet some cool guys)

I think the nades are fine. My biggest complaint about them would be that I get killed from beyond the grave waaaay too often after taking someone out.

Publicly, but only FFA Slayer, so no teamplay. I play teamplay sometimes, but not often.

Also, let me say, it's really the frag grenades that are underpowered, the other grenades can sticky, so they're cool.

Last night I was really feeling the autoaim drag, however. It messed me up sometimes (aiming up to throw a grenade 'beyond' someone's movement, the reticle didn't move fast enough. Still not COD3 level, but more and more noticeable as I play.

I should probably raise my sensitivity, I've been playing at 3, and sometimes, especially with the drag, it becomes too slow.
