The Halo 3 Beta Thread

halo 3 is more balanced and much better, dont get all the 1up people saying its not newb friendly

I agree with you. Im fairing decently in rumble pits and team slayers even after kinda missing out on halo 2. I think general gaming skills transfer pretty good into the beta, and to an even further note, im so empressed with the weapon balance. I love how the weapons all fare so well against each other.

One complaint about the laser. Maybe somebody can verify.

It seems to hit through trees and rocks. If you're at the edge, you can clearly see it clip the geometry and the path of the beam is broken, but you still die, your corpse clearly behind cover. Happening to anyone else? Lag?

you are right, dont know if its lag related though. in one match i hid behind one of the trees in the center just as someone fired the laser at me. i thought i was entirely behind the tree, but i was killed. with the free camera after death, i manuevered it to look at the tree and in the dead center of it were scorch marks from the laser, so i'm not at all sure of how i was hit and killed...

by the way, team rockets is the worst game mode ever! especially on valhala.

I loved Halo 2 and played it to death but even after 50 matches this is better in every way. I love that every single weapon is usable now, Also, the little graphical touches are amazing like the marks in the snow and the roof shaking if a grenade explodes right above.

Still, I would like to see some maps with weapon placements. Can´t find the Rocket on highground for example.

And for good measure:

Games: 50
Last Played: 2007-05-20 09:36:12
Total Kills: 671
Total Deaths: 416
Kill/Death Ratio: 1,613
Total Assists: 198

I just bounced a frag off a guy's face and it went straight up into the air and exploded harmlessly about twenty feet above our heads. :lol

Can't wait for the inevitable Team Lazers though!

that would be fun... i think. (noncommital) maybe.

i agree with the poster that said all weapons are now useful. true! i do however wish that the turrets had a point to leave them stationary. from my experience, the only benefit you get from not taking the turret is unlimited ammo, but the turret has so many bullets that that isnt a huge enough perk to offset the mobility you get from removing it. in the final i'd like to see it either be more accurate, or maybe more rapid firing like the warthog one when mounted. there needs to be a better reason to leave the stationary turrets where they are, otherwise, they are just another weapon only to be picked up in the map.

Wow. I thought for sure I couldn't be worse at a mode than a theoretical Territories on Valhalla but the pain of Lazers Territories already stings.

They need some "They have no weapons and you pwn them with dual spikers" modes though. Just for me.

I get the same feeling of irritation when somebody pounces me with dual spikers that I did when someone dropped out of nowhere with plasma rifle/smg and both triggers held down in Halo 2. :lol

I gravitate to the weapons that promise headshots.

Does anyone remember reading about a brute spiker rifle seperate from the dual wieldable brute spikers? I don't remember where I read the description, but I thought I remember reading about it. Something about small clip, longer and more devasting spikes similar to a rail gun.

Anybody remember reading that?

I'm wondering if it was fan mumbo-jumbo in speculative rants.

I may be very wrong about this, but it seems to me that when carried around there is a significant amount of recoil forcing the reticle upwards that isn't present when the turret is stationary.

So I recall hearing that EBGames/Gamestop had 4 million Halo 3 pre-orders*, I wonder how much that number will change when the beta ends. I wasn't planning on buying Halo 3 but after a few days of Beta I can't stop playing and I want this game more than I want to breathe. I think Ryan said something similar on the 1UP Show and I'm sure there are more of us out there.

* I'm really not sure if this is true, it was just something I recall hearing/reading. Don't quote me on it.

I don't recall that, but Bungie has been saying there will be a full Brute sandbox consisting of grenades, various guns and even vehicles. We've seen the grenades and two guns (three including the one in the Brute vidoc) but I'm sure there are more.

Every time Valhalla pops up in match making, it's pretty much always veto'd. I personally don't like it either, its too small for 4v4, especially Team Slayer.

We estimated the real number based on real world evidence at something in the realm of 1.2-1.5 million. I wasn't planning on buying it either, but I am now, although of course I want NOTHING to do with gamestop so i'll be preordering at best buy if they're doing a midnight launch, and if not then i'll find it somewhere at midnight.

was it good graphics?

I dunno. The nade was pretty jaggy. Looked like it was made out of Legos.

Just got an Overkill on Valhalla. FYI - if you're trying to take 3, it's not a good idea to stand back to back. I know it's cold in there, but it's just not a good idea. Two with a frag, one with the AR, and the last with a melee.

But the animations weren't as good as they would have been if I were playing Uncharted, or some other game like that that looks next gen.

probably true, but recoil is a pretty simple thing to account for and correct. i'm talking about a major benefit to leaving the chain guns in place rather then removing them

They really need to do something about the gametypes. I absolutely hate rockets variants, crazy king, oddball etc... and almost always one or two people leave right off the bat (assumign the veto fails) so I'm not the only one.

How about a 'pure' matchmaker that leaves out all these other modes? Have another one just for all the other gametypes so if people want to play them they can.

How can you hate oddball? Blasphemy! It's the best game mode outside of CTF.

Sans the lock ups, I'm having fun. I have gotten OWNED so much though. Like, bad. If someone gets the jump on me, it's over. If I get the jump on someone, I always manage to miss or something. :lol Anyone have any tips? =(

I've preordered at EB purely because I needed to stick my trade-in money somewhere [they were willing to give me $40AU for a PSOne when I can get that or less on Ebay]. I preordered the regular SE for $130 [I think], but I realise, much like Halo 2, the first day a retail store like Big W or JB Hi-Fi will be selling the damn thing for $80-90AU and have boatloads of copies avaliable.

I know 2 people who bought a 360 to play this beta -- they were going to buy the system eventually, but it makes me wonder how many units halo 3 will push when it's actually released. I'm gonna guess.. a lot.

I think I found a bug in the voice output:

If I'm using the official Xbox 360 wireless headset and have player voice set to "headset only" it still comes out of both.

Otherwise it wouldn't be a biggie but my wife is trying to study on the other side of our house in the working room and the high pitched voice of kids yelling in matchmaking penetrates all walls.

I'm having lots of problems with any 4 on 4 game, someone almost always gets dropped at the actual game start. I'm going into these things solo, so it doesn't seem to be just an issue where you were going in with a full party of 8 (like was happening last night). I'm actually staying off for a little while, since it's happened to the last several team games I've played and it sucks.

I understand where they are coming from. Imagine you were just a casual gamer out to try and have fun in Halo multiplayer when you'd played through the single player campaign, it's a damn steep learning curve.

Valhalla is a great map, but it's too big for 4v4. When Big Team Battle is in I think the map will be perfect. It's a GREAT evolution of Coagulation.

Eh, I dunno. I've got one friend who came over last weekend and gave it a whirl and couldn't get the hang of it. Played with another friend the night Crackdizzle went Live and he capped a flag in his first Halo game ever. And he actually went into the base and pulled it all the way out to the beach.

I think if you've played a good number of FPS's, you won't have too many problems. There's nothing in Halo that requires any more skill then the majority of other titles.

If you run into a seasoned team of four, yeah, you're toast, but I think the average gamer is going to be able to jump in and at least get a few kills right off the bat.

I despise team or rumble rocket matches. Its like everyone else playing Halo 3 is a Physics Major.

I'm better with grenades and rockets than I am with any of the rifles and guns. I love team rockets. Nothing like picking someone off as you zoom out of the mancannon.

Anyone having issues with the RP points? I've never left games, but it just drops. I've noticed it happens when matchmaking is occurring, and often it finds a match, populates the player slots, then suddenly drops the lineup (this is without the game even starting), and starts over again.

I hope so. Any decent sniper will still reign supreme in that map. I'm hoping that a bit more people (also, more vehicular usage since noone seems to touch the Warthog and/or the Mongoose) will make the map better.

Why did Bungie put prime cliff face camp spots on either side of the bases on Valhalla? Seems an odd choice. More than once, I've seen a player get to the other side of the map with a sniper and just peg people as they spawn, completely unaware and vulnerable, inside the base for more than a handful of really easy kills. Seems like it's setup just for that purpose.

Yeah, I'm hoping it'll play a bit better with 6v6, since it's basically Coag/Blood Gulch, but Team Slayer, Territories, and Assault suck. Especially territories.

Well, in my opinion snipers SHOULD reign supreme on Valhalla :) If the opposing team has a decent sniper but your team doesn't.... you deserve to lose your rounds on that map.

There's open maps and closed maps, and the open ones are a Sniper's playground, plain and simple.

As for the vehicles, my theory is that the novelty of the mancannon just hasn't worn off for most people yet :) Once players understand the specific, limited practicality of it (and only use it in the right situations), the vehicles will get a lot more use.

Overall... Valhalla really really impresses me. I've played on the map many, many times but the "fight" never seems to break out in the same area, which is a great indication of a well-designed map. Sometimes it's in the riverbed, sometimes in the center by the two hills, and sometimes on the far side by the wrecked ship.

It's also versitile for different gametypes. Territories on Valhalla>>> territories on Snowbound our High Ground.

I maintain that Valhalla is the perfect BTB map. It's just too big for the eight player cap imposed in the beta right now.

yeah, i wish they would remove those spots. snipers do just fine without having access to a hard to attack and high up vantage point

EDIT: speaking of valhala, i love it too, but is it just me, or is the waterfall base at a pretty severe disadvantage? its pretty easy to contain players to that base, whereas the other base its easier to escape and get into position

I ran into a problem last night. I counldnt save anymore games, I hope there isnt a limit in the final version.

Also Master Chief throws like we wants to score a touch down, the human gernades still bounce too much.

It's not too, too common, but I guess I fail to see the point of them, except use for spawn camping. You really don't have a great vantage down map, but the view into the base for spawn raping is phenomenal. Plus, considering most players immediately go for the BR's, nades, and trip set right there at the topside, it makes it even easier to take one in the dome at spawn.

Fix please.

are you talking about the ingame setting or the one in the guide? have you tried both?
