The Halo 3 Beta Thread

It's harder to keep a k/d ratio in skirmish games because you end up sacrificing yourself for the goal/team, IMO. Unless he's one of those guys that stands back and snipes in all day in a CTF game.
Nothing wrong with that. I do it all the time. And it's usually because of my kills that we win.

I think I found a bug in the voice output:

If I'm using the official Xbox 360 wireless headset and have player voice set to "headset only" it still comes out of both.

Same here, except i use the official wired headset.

How do I view others' films?
Go to their file share.
Pull up the guide, go to their tag and then you can see the 'File share', press on it and it will take you to his fileshare where you can download the videos he has made available.

Not saying there's anything right or wrong, I'm just saying that the guys going after the flag, planting the bomb, etc are gonna die a lot more than the guy that sits back and snipes. Just talkin' 'bout the k/d ratio.

Nice edit...

Assuming three players of equal skill specialise in different styles of play:
1 is a long-range player and prefers sniper rifles
1 is a mid-range player and prefers battle rifles
1 is a close-range player and prefers assault rifles
The sniper will always have a better ratio because his play style is much less risky.

Christ I hate people who hole up some where in Team Slayer and treat the game like it's Rainbow Six or some shit :(

On High Ground there is ALWAYS someone on my team who runs for the sniper rifle, then spends the whole match near the mongoose spawn trying to snipe. Same with Valhalla and people staying in thier own base the whole time

Wow, in just a few days this thread has become the Oblivion Thread-Killer.

Definitely loving Halo 3, though I'm getting my ass handed to me still. I hate all these high ranked guys making teams in Training mode just to grief.

The more I see this game (and believe me, I've spent hours watching films the last few days) the more I think this game looks great. The lighting really is spot on especially.

I've actually had the exact opposite reaction recently. Initially I was impressed, but the more I play the more I change my mind. Lighting being the only exception, everything else is average.

Edit: Forgot to add that the water looks ace as well.

I had a 20+ minute Team Slayer match on Valhala the other day because the other team decide to camp back at their spawn. It felt more like an hour than the 20 or so minutes that it actually took.

Well this is BS... I was going to bring the 360 over to my friends' place to show them the beta, and this is what happened:

"You guys still have a router, right?"
".... No, it broke."
".... Oh, well we can still do split-screen."
*finds that the "Downloads" option in Crackdown is greyed out if you aren't connected to XBL*
"..."
"Shit."
"Uh... wanna play Crackdown co-op?"
"Yeah sure."
*finds that co-op is only available on XBL or System Link*
"..."
"..."
"... Next gen sucks."

Maybe I should go back and play Halo 2 for reference, but I don't see a tremendous leap in terms of visuals either. It's better, but only incrementally (IMO, of course). Except for the water of course - the water is awesome. :)

The gameplay is vastly improved, though - no question there.

Question: if you're driving a warthog and your gunner is killing people, do those kills count as assists for you? Because if not, they ****ing should... I drove the hog around Valhalla with a gunner for a really nice stretch, and he racked up like 9 or 10 kills... shame I don't get a taste of that.

i do however wish that the turrets had a point to leave them stationary. from my experience, the only benefit you get from not taking the turret is unlimited ammo, but the turret has so many bullets that that isnt a huge enough perk to offset the mobility you get from removing it. in the final i'd like to see it either be more accurate, or maybe more rapid firing like the warthog one when mounted. there needs to be a better reason to leave the stationary turrets where they are, otherwise, they are just another weapon only to be picked up in the map.

I'd never thought about it but i really agree, i always take them off, you're just waiting to get sniped otherwise. There should be more of a benefit to leaving them stationary.

If someone gets the jump on me, it's over. If I get the jump on someone, I always manage to miss or something. :lol Anyone have any tips? =(

I'm like that quite often too :lol

I keep going up in rank because my team wins. I'm not as good as my skill number indicates. Now I get beat down even more often. :(

i think i just had my first authentically good slayer game: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=2387886&player=Drohne

partly it's that my opponents sucked as much as i do, but partly it's that i decided to really think about my approach: go for the weapons i like (twin smgs or spikers, carbine), stay at an appropriate range instead of rushing in and praying for a kill, work out good angles of approach instead of following the red dots. i found myself actually surviving and racking up a couple sprees -- maybe i'm not a completely hopeless fps player. of course i'll get two kills my next game and feel like an idiot, but i think i'm starting to see how this works.

Yea, I do that. Though to me, it's a lot better than running all guns blazing around in the base where somone can get lucky and spawn behind you when you have just finished off an opponent. You get a nice K/D ratio and can pick off strays and get involved in fights from a distance. Plus it's a fun way to play, doesn't bore me in the least.

That's just one of many, many ways to play Halo though. If I get spawned in the base, I'll go for the twin spikers or BR (whichever is closest) and play a sneaky game, getting involved late into big fights and using the radar to confuse people.

As for staying near the base in Valhalla, I've got a 12 kill spree from doing that! Here :lol

The same thing happened to me man. I play with the same group of guys for most 360 games. We leveled up pretty fast the first night. The next day, JB and I were getting rocked because we didn't have our other players on and our level was too high when compared to our actual skills.

I started playing Rumble Pit to get my individual skills up, since you start from 1 and work your way up from there. I already know how to play with my team, but it's when I'm not with my familiar group that things get dicey. Rumble Pit so far has definitely helped my individual game.

Well played. I formally take back all the mean things I said previously, re: stickiness.

I won't get the chance go hop on for another four hours or so. I mean, I love my kids but it's times like these that I wish I could just drop'em off at their grandparents (who live on the other side of the country). I hate trying to squeeze in enough playtime in the one hour I usually have after they finally cork it for the day.

Just shut down my Xbox 360 for five days... I'm heading to San Francisco.

I'm such a geek, I'm packing my Xbox 360 controller and hoping somebody at our office or one of our partners would be playing the beta and I could join if beer was on me

I am total opposite.
On Rumle Pit I have tonnes of fun and usually do quite well but if you put me into Team Slayer I will be a burden on the team.

That's exactly me. I'm at 12 in Rumble Pit but getting my ass handed to me at lower levels in team based games and kids yelling at how crap I am and telling me to quit

lol awesome, Op found that out bout a week ago tho, he was like hey this radio is playing Halo music :lol I went in there but never stayed long enough for it to kick in, that's awesome though.

I never liked split screen for action games. I'm not sad to see it gone.

Are rumble pit ratings inflated? I can't believe that I easily kill 15's and get first place in rumble pit, but I can't compete with 6's in team slayer.

All it means is you have skill at the game but your team work sucks.

Rumble Pit is all about taking kills and throwing frags.

I don't find the interest in playing it. Never have in Halo 2 and won't in Halo 3.

not mine but my friends stats:

# Total Kills: 705
# Total Deaths: 408
# Kill/Death Ratio: 1.7279
# Total Assists: 233

they were almost the same in halo2 (1.69 i believe at almost 10,000 games played). i hate playing against him :(

Certain aspects of the game look great, but Valhalla and most of the weapon models look straight out of Halo 2.

High Ground looks amazing though, Snowbound is pretty average looking.

Wait, the thread is stickied? Did they port this to PS3 or something?

lawl.

In other news, I won my first game of Slayer ever. It was one of those perfect little games where three people have 24 kills and are all in a huge firefight in the middle of Snowbound. The sense of accomplishment here kills anything I've done this year in games. Game of the year, can't wait for September, thank god we have a four day weekend next week.

I got standby'd or something but I watch this one guy jump up and down on my screen like Noob Saibot's Fatality, for lack of a better description.

i agree 100%, but one aspect of the lighting i'd like to see improved is the environment shadows casted on players and vehicles. its got the pgr3 effect, in which your either completely in the shade, or completely in the sun. i want forza 2 shadows, in which the warthog could be partially shadowed. a small nitpick to be sure :)

Absolutely. Truly dynamic shadows for the environment (and not just some objects, like barrels) would improve the graphics a TON.

Also, my stats:

# Echo Eagle
halo2emblem.ashx

# SPARTAN - S68
# Gunnery Sergeant - Grade 2

Combat Stats
Games: 167
Last Played: 5/19/2007 5:31:26 PM

* Total Kills: 1884
* Total Deaths: 1867
* Kill/Death Ratio: 1.0091
* Total Assists: 818

I'm a 27 in Rumble Pit. I play it more than anything else. Such is the reason for my 1:1 kill/death ratio.

Here are my latest stats:

Htx Darren Htx

SPARTAN - D12
Sergeant - Grade 2

Combat Stats Games: 64
Last Played: 5/20/2007 5:50:45 PM
Total Kills: 964
Total Deaths: 639
Kill/Death Ratio: 1.5086
Total Assists: 287

Right now I'm a level 28 in RP

I play exclusively in Rumble Pit. I haven't touched any team games yet. I rarely played Teams in Halo 2 either. I guess I just don't trust anybody else plus there are tons of idiots on XBL so why would I want them on my team?

I'm still confused on how RP and the new skill thing work. A few games in a row now I've played 4th and 5th respectively yet each time my "skill" rating has gone up? Can anybody explain this I'm really confused lol.

:lol :lol :lol

I was like "SHIT I been gone all day watchin Hot Fuzz and my Beta thread is gone! BUT IT'S STICKIED.

I guess even when you're the King Of Earth, an honorary PhD from NYU is still kinda nice.

:)

Heh I was looking for the thread 3 pages back and then I realized it was stickied. I never read the sticky threads for some reason.

Am i experiencing a bug? The stats that show when i press start and go in the service record shows my highest skill is 9, in the lobby it says 2.....

Few questions from n00b...

- What is total assists in combat stats?

- How can I see all of medals not just for individual games?

- If I quit game currently in progress, does it affect my rating/score/reputation etc? I hate sniper game. Once game type and map is selected in matchmaking, there is no way to quit unless it gets vetoed by majority.
