The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I'm not much of a fan of the missile pod.

Seems like it's already easy enough to take out vehicles between the sniper and spartan laser (and most of the things on valhalla are mongoose's which are pretty easy to take out with just a BR since there's no turret gunner on it). The missile pod gives off a warning of a few seconds to the people in the vehicle too meaning they can just drive over to cover or something. And it leaves you vulnerable to snipers from the slow movement speed.

Maybe I'm just not very good with it, but it doesn't really seem needed. I guess it would be nice against banshees though.
The spartan laser doesn't take out vehicles, though. It will damage them. But it won't absolutely destroy them the way a locked-on missile pod shot does.

Most people I've played against are pretty terrible with the laser, or just ignore it altogether.

I went on a couple warthog rampages earlier tonight, 28 and 32 kills in team slayer, and I think I got lasered maybe once

Round Two was simply an incredible game. We had this theory that since momentum was on our side at the end of the last game, we could carry it over to this game. It was kind of a pep talk to carry us through, but it worked - we jumped out to a lead of five or six and held it through to about 35 kills. Right then Vociferous dropped the Bubble Shield down under the gate, and it was a standoff. I headed in and landed a mêlée - which didn't do much good since he pulled out the shotty on my face. I watched as two more dropped in similar fashion. By the time I respawn, it's a tied game.

The rest of the match was absolute carnage, where neither team pulled ahead by more than one kill. Two exchanges stand out. First, finally prying that goddamn Spartan Laser away from Vociferous on the beach - and then lasering him in the face when he come barreling through the gate to try and take it back. Words cannot describe how very delicious that was. :lol

The next was getting the jump on their team moving as a pack - they'd just passed under the gate toward the beach, one carrying the turret. He fell behind due to his slower speed, and one grenade toss and a mêlée later, the turret is mine. The rest of their group ran into my team under the cave and tried to double back - but I had the turret now. Mwahahahaahaha! *kills Voc*

The game ended when we were tied at 49 each. Both groups met just outside the gate, and grenades were raining from the skies like unusually explosive hail. We landed the kill - right before our entire team blew up. Really, it could have gone either way.

I would not describe myself as a fan of Team Slayer - but I'm coming around. With a well-matched social party going, it was un-****ing-believable.

The only thing I remember about this match was blindly sticking a spike grenade to you. :lol That and being on a tear with the SMG/Spiker combo. I might have been the guy with the turret... let me know when you play the tape back.

Other highlights of the night (not w/ Ghaleon) included a random trip mine kill via the man cannon on Valhalla, and a triple kill with the Spartan Laser on Snowbound in Team Oddball. Why is that gun so damn awesome!?

I kinda wish the AR would get it's clip extended by a few rounds, or it's damage bumped just a tad, I've had some many times where I've almost killed someone and probably should have, but end up havin to reload and they high tail it or my kill gets stolen :(

Yeah, head on a full clip doesn't kill somebody with full sheilds. You gotta either melee or switch to your backup or nade.

That happens to me all the time. I think part of it might be due to bullet lag/hit detection of some sort. Either way, unloading an entire clip at relatively close distance with an AR should definitely land a kill.

yeah it does. you may be missing with some of your shots. i think its less accurate the longer the trigegr is held, try pulsing it a bit. a full clip is definitely enough to kill someone with full shields

Yup, that's how it was in Halo, IIRC. I assumed Bungie hadn't changed that aspect of the gun in the Beta, so I made sure not to hold the trigger down for too long while firing and got pretty good results. It's a quality weapon.

Also, holy crap @ the size of this thread. I think it's the largest I've ever seen on the forums, and this is just the Beta. :lol

You don't wan't to stand still when you are shooting someone with the AR. You wan't to run closer to them. The longer the trigger is held down the more spray effect it has. By running at them you're making your target larger, and reducing spray area. I love the assault rifle. The only gun I will put it down for is a Dual Wield combo or the Needler.

Does anyone know if bungie will allow us to download movies we saved for halo 3 on their website? Or is this a permanent game only thing? Not sure how it all works :)

I've been having a blast playing this, and the film saving feature is brilliant. Every night something happens in a match that gets me hyped to see it again in replay.

My highlight tonight was disabling a Warthog with a plasma pistol blast. He sat there dumbfounded, so I stuck two plasmas to his head and sent him to hell.

Eh?

We had a party of 4 of our own going. You didn't send me a message (or an invite of any kind) so I'm not sure what you're referring to, exactly.

Yeah we wanted to you to join our group or vice versa so we could go into team training with a full team. Sent you a couple of invites (although one of them may have been to someone else in the party) and a message to one of you.

Warthog is my favorite way to get kills, almost always guaranteed atleast 5 kills. Plus its awesome when you manage to take both of them at the same time (although it leaves you wide open for snipers and missiles).

I've kind of been waffling over the graphics. To me, the sound design and animations are the best I've seen from any game, and are beyond reproach. I love the lighting, think the water is good not great, and for the most part think the textures are okay. I'm pretty sure there are undisclosed things about MP that will change the dynamics, and that makes me bite my tongue and not be too critical. But I'm just not wowed like I thought I would be. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed, more like fretful.

Saved Films are just data - it uses the game engine to play (to keep file sizes tiny and also to allow things like moving the camera around and stuff which'll be in the final game). So you can't really download it to your computer and watch it.

I've always wondered this, but are melees body specific as well as bullets. When I melee, I have a tendency to aim for the chest, should I aim for the head

That's why I repeat the question a 2nd time.. If I buy a cheap TV card with SVideo in and use the Composite cables to connect my 360 to my pc, can I record my matches in 480i on my PC and encode them to divx etc?

If yes, which card(s) should I get?

Get a cheap PCI card, they get the job done nicely.

Im still getting used to all the new twaeks to all the weapons. Slightly overwhelmed with all the changes...It felt amazing being able to doge a plasma charge without moving too much.

The SMG is worthless now isnt it?

SMG are quite a bit stronger then they were in Halo 2, and more powerful then the Assault Rifle too I believe. It's great to use with a Spiker in dual wielding too.

yes. also jump when meleeing. a jumping melee to the head is pretty much an instant kill.

Dual wield or with a charged shot from the cov pistol they can kill, but you're pretty much better off leaving them on the ground.

also GhaleonEB's story made me want to add him but I think his friends list is full.

I'm one of them but I never manage to see him on.

I was unaware that the AR is random instead of a real gun fire. Makes more sense now then.

oh indeed. I haven't had a chance to just tool around experimenting with things like different melee damages in 3 yet, but for 2 a lot of people wrote up pretty detailed reports of the guns, their ranges, their accuracy, their melee damage, etc., all of which is pretty essential to know as the skill level ramps up. as a general guideline for melee damage, I think the brute weapons (spikers, brute shot) are a little feistier because of the blades attached, while big-ass guns like the rocket launcher and spartan laser seem to pack more of a punch too.

as regards pulsing the AR, I've been treating it the same as the SMG in 2: at range it seems important to moderate your fire somewhat (still chuckle when beating someone dual wielding SMGs with a single at range in Halo 2), but close up I just unload it, because hey what the hell right?

Is there anyway to join your friend's open party without an invite (I had someone on my friend list showing up in my party while I was sitting in the lobby making changes to my preference, I didn't invite him or anything)? I've been playing all pick ups because my friend list is small, which isn't bad but I'd rather be able to play with the same people and get to know them that way.

Ask Dan about Rocket Launcher melee shots to the head. They work in the air, too :lol

Had a crazy match in Vahalla last night that involved me racking up 29 kills from atop the Warthog turret. The driver was really good at keeping us up and out of danger. He also splattered a suicidal Mongoose driver. Massacre matches typically aren't very fun, especially when one of the opponents quit early, but they were good sports about it, and it was good feedback all around.

Team skimirsh just takes your ratio to the toilet.

Also, is there a way to access someone's file share without friending them or having them on your recently played list?

I don't buy this 'Team Skirmish takes your ratio to the toilet' line. unless you're just throwing your body at a flag/bomb over and over, and why would you do that?

It actually is a lot better for me in team skirmish if I'm with a good team. Let them be the fodder and pick off kills by coming late into the fight! Its easier to get a good K/D ratio on skirmish than it is on rumble pit, in my experience.

agree. the way I play means I often find myself coming in second or third in rumble pit, but with a far better k/d spread than the players above me. it looks like to win Rumble Pit consistently I'd have to abandon my self-preservation instinct

Depends. I really like skirmish games. When I'm partied up, I play very reserved, my team coordinates the attack or defense, and things tend to go very well, even if we lose. Good, fun, tactical matches that rarely see me on the negative side.

Going solo into matchmaking tends to be a different experience. Dropped players. Players that don't have headsets. Players that don't understand or simply ignore the objective. So, yeah, there have been occasions, more than a few, where I know there is no way I can drop down and cap the flag, but the clock is ticking and half my team is dead on the beach when they spawn, so shit, I'm going in, knowing that I'm a dead man.

Hey JB... why didn't you, lj, rod, and spooka not join up with our party? Were you guys not in the mood for 4vs4 team training?

Also spud, arm, and vagrant, awesome games! Warthog was killer. :D

team skirmish games... not so killer :(

Man, I don't know what was up with me last night. I played horribly.

Forgive me Spud =(

I had my most terrible match last night. It was horrible. It was as if the opposite team had an extra member. It was funny in a wicked sense. But afterwards, the shame prompted me to stop playing for the night.

In any case, we need to set up some matches tonight with gaffers. Ok, so maybe I shouldn't have added a description to my most shameful night, but be assured, it's a very rare occurrence.

I haven't played much in the way of online FPS's since the days of the original UT, but I'm really liking Halo 3 so far. I suck (think my k/d ratio is ~ .6), but I'm having a lot of fun, and I feel like, though I keep dying, I usually have a chance, and I wouldn't be bad if I could just improve my aim/my use of grenades, and get a bit better about remembering to melee when I get up close.

Had a great game of VIP on Snowbound last night. The team I was on went down 8-1. We were just getting embarrassed at that point. Somehow, though, we managed to pull ourselves together and went on a great run that ended up with the game tied at 9-9. That stretch was the first time I've felt like I was actually playing the game well. I killed the VIP a couple of times in there, and though I did die a few times, I felt like I was finally contributing in a real way (instead of just being cannon fodder). Anyway, at 9-9, everyone came out into the open, and we had a huge free for all in the middle of the map, which ended when I got lucky with a brute grenade and stickied on to their VIP. We got the win, and everyone on my team was just sort of like "I can't believe we won that game".

Edit: I do wish more people would use the mic (for useful things, obviously). When it's being used properly, it adds a lot to the experience/makes the team much better. I suppose it's because I'm soloing, and if I had a steady team things would be better. Still, the headset is included with Live for a reason, and I'm surprised how many times I see people either without a mic or just not using it.

I was playing Team Slayer on Valhalla, and at first it went about normal for me (not very good) but suddenly every time I turn around there's not one or two of the opposing team on my jock, but three or four. I played for nearly five minutes before figuring out that everyone on my side had dropped, and I'd been trying to fight four guys at once.

I died alot.
