The Halo 3 Beta Thread

GeoNeo said:
Yeah, they increased it by 12 degrees over Halo 2. :P I also notice people are more prone to motion sickness when the FOV is so restricted.
Well, that's enough to be noticeable, for sure. Halo 2 felt like firefights were more claustrophobic, for lack of a better term. Halo 3 feels much better.

I'd read a few times that it was 60 in Halo 2. Not sure how accurate it is.

Wait, I was pretty sure the FOV for H2 Xbox was 60? Maybe the Vista version upped it to 70.

If the FOV for H2 really was 70, then I think a 2 degree increase is just embarrassing.

Yeah, I could be wrong guys. I thought ferrex addressed the FOV topic in this thread, but I can't seem to find it.

Found it.

Yes, but here I'm just a lurker, waiting for bugs (that I don't already know about) to surface. Some of you are my testers now, heheh!

Incidentally, because I edited it out of my first post while I double checked, the FOV is currently around 72 degrees, subject to tweaking.

Wow, it might increase for the final game. ;)

no this is a true story, i am on the phone with 18004myxbox now.

and im pissed, cause I read all the stories and just figured they didnt take care of thier xbox.

I took care of mine, and I rarely used it cause I work so much...yet it still ****ing broke. peice of shit

Yea. the 360...not so...relaiable....but it has nothing to do with any software/game/video etc. It would have died regardless of what you were playing,

I think the FOV is why I hated Halo 2 so much, besides feeling incompetent vs weapon whores.

The game always felt so cramped for me and I got sick of people beating on me from areas I obviously couldn't see.

What's so bad about a narrow field of vision? It lets you see things in more detail and aim more precisely, both of which are important for a game like Half Life 2. As long as the levels are designed around that limitation (which they are in HL2) the loss of peripheral vision doesn't ever cripple you.

Frankly I almost always prefer narrow FOV's because 3D rendering looks ugly and unnatural with a wide FOV. It also feels more "natural" to me as it feels more like the way we actually look at things -- ie, you can see a lot of things in front of you, but you're only ever focused on a relatively small portion of it wherever your attention is directed. Computer monitors/TV screens are usually about the same size, so it makes sense for things to be presented that way. A wide FOV gives me information overload.

Halo: 90°
Halo 2: 60°
Halo 3: 72° (Someone from Bungie called me out like a hundred pages ago, and looked this up. Also said it might not be final, but I don't know how seriously he meant it.)
Half-Life 2: 75° (PC gamers not used to it got motion sickness.)
Counterstrike: Source: 90°
Unreal Tournament 2004: 90°
Call of Duty: 80°
Doom 3: 90°
Quake 4: 90°

What's so bad about narrow fields of vision in competitive first person shooters? Obviously the problem is that you see less! In H3 I'm having to do a lot of flicking back and forth to cover an angle wide enough for me to be confident when searching for guys I expect to be ahead of me. I didn't mind it much in HL2 singleplayer, because, like you mentioned, they had it in mind. But it has no place in multiplayer, where cinematic direction is never an issue in the first place, and where you need to be presented with as much information as is reasonably possible - and reasonably possible has been pretty consistently defaulting to 90 degrees for some time now.

Aiming more precisely can easily be adjusted with stick or mouse sensitivity; it isn't really dependent on FOV within reasonable parameters.

90 degrees doesn't look ugly or unnatural to you, hopefully, because it's so common, and your own field of view, as a human being, is close to 180. Of course you can't read a book with your peripheral vision, but you'd notice a gigantic blue robot bearing down on you with a machine gun.

And actually, console FPSes traditionally have thinner FOVs because people are expected to be sitting further back with screen comprising a smaller wedge of their vision, while PC FPSes have wider FOVs because people are expected to be right up on the screen, with it almost filling their view.

Besides, as 16x9 displays become more and more common, it makes less and less sense to stuff thin FOVs into the wider space.

(In case you haven't noticed, this is one of my pet peeves, and is very high on the list of Things That Ruin Halo 2.)

Mister Toups said:
Doesn't Halo3 have a third person mode? Does that help at all?
When you pick up certain weapons or enter vehicles. I don't have much experience with either, so I won't hazard a guess as to what the FOV is for third person. In HL2, though, the FOV reverts to 90 when you enter a vehicle.

Mister Toups said:
Though there are functional advantages to a low FOV, particularly for console titles. If you're running on a small SD television, a wider FOV means individual details get scrunched up and shrunk. In a game like Halo, in particular, which is full of wide open spaces, it means it's more difficult to identify objects when they are too far away. You can see more information, but the quality of the information decreases.

This isn't so much of an issue for the 360 or for PC games, granted. Though not everyone has a PC powerful enough to display games at high resolutions and not everyone plays 360 games on a HDTV.
Continuing to use Halo, that situation is largely avoided because the only things relevant to you that you have to watch out for are, in general, six feet tall. It's rare to find a situation in which someone is so far away that the difference between 90 and 72 hurts you (even in 480i), but relatively common to be up against somebody else in CQC, when the extra 18 degrees on the periphery very tangibly helps you avoid being whacked in the back. It also helps that although the delivery system is analog, once you've played through the game, or have played a few hours of multiplayer, you can interpret it almost digitally. Like in SMB, there are only so many tiles, and you can pretty quickly learn a 3D shooter's geometry set well enough that even slightly stretched things can be quickly categorized. I find that, also, most distortion occurs around the edges of the screen, which makes sense because it's the same deal with wide angle lenses on cameras.

Yesterday in H3 I was playing ring around the rosie with two blue guys because I saw them on my radar but couldn't get them into view :(

If I have time (probably not during the beta ;_;) I'll make up some comparison screenshots in HL2 or something. I think the console command for FOV changing is pretty easy in that?

It's mesmerizing. The animation of the Spartan when the 'Goose rights itself is a great detail. It's so realistic how he subtly shifts weight around.

Yeah, the animation is definitely a high point for the graphics. They still need to add dynamic shadows though. :p

So I'm pretty much done with the Halo 3 beta and was hoping to pass my copy of Crackdown onto a buddy so that he could try out the awesomeness that is Halo 3. Has anyone done this yet? It seems like it would let you redownload the beta onto another console, but I wanted to make sure before I sent him the game.

What is everyone's favorite grenades? Plasma no longer. It's hard to choose between frag and spike. I get so many death from the grave from frags, and they are great to bounce off walls where you think enemies are. I might have to go with spikes, when you stick someone it is the best feeling.
I still like the Plasma grenades the most, but I think once I get more accustomed to the Spike grenades, they'll be my favorite. <3

The best thing about the grenades is, I don't have a favorite. They each have their use. I love the spike grenades partly because they make a wonderful sound when you stick some poor soul with'em.

*squelch*

Side note: With the deepening of the Brute sandbox, it has me thinking that we'll be on some ships/worlds that are entirely Brute focused. Places where you won't find plasma grenades, but you do find spike grenades; where you don't find the Plasma Rifle or SMG, but the Spiker Rifle is available. Similar to the early Arbiter missions in Halo 2, where the Carbine was the substitute for the Battle Rifle.

I've had the same thing happen to me one time, with the mongoose. It's great!

Hahaha just had a sweet round. Was 4v4 slayer on Valhalla, and right at the start two of my teammates dropped.

So rather than get discouraged, my lone partner and I just rode around like crazy people in the warthog for like the entire match.

Normally this wouldn't be that funny, but I kept laying on the horn the whole time. They see me come powersliding around some corner... "HONK HONK HOOOOOOONK HONK HOOOOONK"

We weren't even trying to kill them, just trying to get crazy air, etc. They were assholes and kept sticking us, lasering us, etc. After they were up like 30 to 5 you'd think they'd have joined the party and gotten in the hog with us, or something :(

They probably, you know, wanted to play for real. Not watch two yahoos jumping a warthog for 15 minutes.

Well after a few hours i'm learning the new weapon balance and map layouts, strangely the maps feel realy small dispite the screenshots making them look huge! I guess thats good for most 4 on 4 gametypes.

What is the damn deal with people quitting out 5 minutes before the match end when our team is only 3 behind, why!? I only came back to this forum because the game locked up on selecting a new host, damn bungie at last make punishment for that kind of leaving harsh so it stops people doing it... I think someone left in half the games I played tonight being at the beginning or near the end.

Apart from that and a small handful of laggy games its pretty nice, more effects in use then I thought, the analog sticks now feel way too sensative even at setting 2, way too twitchy on the sniper for my likes.

I'm leaving feedback against every kid under age in this game. I'm sorry but Bungie said you had to be at least 18 years of age to get into the Beta. I'm sick and tired of hearing little kids rap, talk shit and scream at the top of their lungs in these games. I've had enough. I might not get them banned, but if I leave enough feedback, maybe I won't have to put up with them near as much.

I use 6. I prefer 10, but too much overshooting got to me. It'd be really, really cool if you could customize sensitivity for specific weapons.

Oh and BTB saved Valhalla. It's so much better with 12 it isn't funny. I'm actually liking High Ground the least right now. It's just too straightforward compared to the other two.

I use 2 for a steady crosshair, but I got to get use to no movement accel like halo 1 and 2 had because I keep twiching too much and missing snipes and lazer shots :(

HAHA yeah its funny, one kid ended a voice war with something snotty like "well I don't like you, huhph!" and made it sound like he just won a bitch fest, he must have been like 13 or something. :lol
