The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Snipers DIAF

I wish this weapon was just removed.

Also, the mathematician in me couldn't help but admire this beautiful coincidence:
# Total Kills: 1350
# Total Deaths: 1500
# Kill/Death Ratio: 0.9
# Total Assists: 608

Training or, in the retail version, custom games.

In Halo 2's custom games, does it match you against players of equal skill or, like the Beta, put together people from all over the spectrum?

custom games were private in halo 2... there was no matchmaking at all.

Okay, I definately came in last in one round and my skill rating still went up. I am destined to never be able to compete again. This is like the ****ing Peter Principle of rating systems. I am well beyond my level of incompetence.

Only problem with that is you'd have assholes (who are good) decide to not level up so they can own noobs all day long.

Well they'd still have good k/d ratios and would go up based on that. Some regular players would go up as well, but they'd go back down when they started getting owned.

If assholes wanted to own noobs all day, they'd have to throw their k/d away...during which time they wouldn't be owning noobs.

Were they all higher levels than you? That might be why.

Your kill spread might have more to do with it than just your place.

Are you getting positive kill spreads in these games?

I wonder if the ranking system has been overhauled. Others have noted it's easier to rank up too. Hmm.

no it has been completely redone. i never got higher than 17 on halo 2, but now im 24 and to be honest the competition isnt all that great.

Yea, I've definitely had my games against some high 30's/low 40's that play well below what would have been that level in Halo 2...like I said, I'm no 46 if we're talking Halo 2's system :P

I think it'll be harder to rank up in the final game. Kind of similar to what Realtime Worlds did with Crackdown. They want people to see how high they can get.

Yeah, that's a fast 46. It would have taken quite a few wins in 2 to get there.

I got raped playing with some people from GAF. Like, 3 kills, and deaths in the double digits.

Christ. I play too many sports games and my l33t Halo skills seem to be diminishing :(

i wish they'd implement the halo 2 ranking system in it's entirety. and that includes the colored circle/angle things

ranking up so fast isn't exciting... halo 2 was CRACK

I don't know about Rumble Pit, but in team games, you just need to stay near the majority of your team and you won't have to worry about someone spawning behind you, at least from what I've observed.

It's mainly happened at Snowbound. And I've even been with a teammate or two, they still spawn behind me.

Rumble it will spawn you in the sand in the middle quite often, where you will take a sniper round to the back of the head. It also will spawn at the back of the base, regardless if there are players there or not. It's not too too bad though, but frequent enough that they should take a look at it. Probably place players to the sides or in the base in cover.

leveling up is crap!

I play team games and I get stuck with higher levels cause I level up cause my team wins, not because I'm good.

The game collects lots of stats, they should compare you with things like k/d ratio

I'm starting to like Snowbound more and more now that I'm getting better with throwing grenades. I often hate how frag grenades (and an occassional plasma grenade) would bounce further then I'd want them to, but thanks to the snow in Snowbound, they can land exactly where you want them. I've gotten some nice kills with 'em in my last game (+22 K/D spree, for those who care), which coincidentally was one of my best Slayer games ever. Shame some schmo killed me after (approximately) 19 - 20 consecutive kills: I didn't want to die even once in that game. :[

I saved and uploaded the replay, so if someone feels like watching it: lemme know and I'll recommend it to you.

Speaking of grenades: what's the general opinion about them? Personally, I believe that the plasma grenades pack the strongest punch, followed by frag grenades. Brute grenades are obviously the weakest, and they're only good in narrow corridors or for sticking someone. Thoughts?

Yeah, I've noticed Spike grenades are generally useless in open spaces unless you get the person to walk directly on top of it as it explodes. I don't have much experience with plasmas yet, but I love how they look =). I was wondering if plasma's might be more powerful than frags in Halo 3 because if not they wouldn't really have much of a purpose, but I can't say if they are or not due to inexperience with them.

I've got some really nice spike grenade kills out in the open lately...stuck one on the side of the rocket cave on HG and someone coming out of the tunnel got it all in their face :lol

I was using them wrong at first, trying to hit where the person was, when what you need to do is stick it to a wall they're sitting beside....

Oh they are, as far as I can tell. I've seen how a single plasma grenade killed people with full (or practically full) shields, whereas one frag grenade 'only' takes down someone's shield when that person has full health, at best. Lethal when someone's weakened though.

If you are standing in the immidiate blast radius of a plasma, it's a kill even from full shields, much like Halo 2. Spike grenades will also kill if they are right on top of it, but the range is tighter due to the conical blast. I don't think frags can kill when you have full health, but they will drop shields entirely if you are near the blast. Not sure about the respective ranges of frags and plasmas.

I'm pretty sure frags have the largest splash damage and that would definitely make sense in terms of balance.

Btw, does anyone else wish that plasmas were on Highground? :(

Yes.

I think it might be tied to the fiction. I think it's interesting that High Ground is covered in Brute weaponry, very little other Covenant. In the campaign a similar outpost may have been overrun by a pack of Brutes.

I've had the most luck with the Spike Grenades. There's tons of em on each map and it's very easy to stick people with them. They seem to be the most powerful too - you stick a VIP with the plasma grenade and it won't kill him but a spike grenade stick is an instant kill.

Spike grenades are harder to dodge too since they're not bright blue like plasma nades.

I never noticed that before, but it definitely makes sense. Brutes use carbines too, right (can't remember)?

Edit: I'm not too sure about the spike grenade instant VIP kill, it might depend on where you stick them, since I got the VIP once with a spike nade and it didn't kill him (I have a video too, as proof, clearly shows that I stuck him on the shoulder). And I remember sticking the VIP with a plasma and getting a kill, but he was probably damaged.

On a side note, I always think someone melees me when they really stick me with a spike nade up close, I think the sounds are similar.

On a related note, it's kind of hard to tell when I get a stick if there's a crazy firefight going on - they don't show up with the kind of contrast that the plasmas do. (Might have something to do with my crappy TV (which gets retired in July! Huzzah!).

Nah, it's not the set, they're much harder to pick up. They don't glow!

Well, really I just want to know how the skill rating drops. I'm certainly not willing to purposefully lose, I just can't imagine getting dominated much harder than I already am. I'm sure everyone here knows how when you fight someone A LOT better than you, you can really tell. Thoughts like "There is no way I could kill someone that fast with the <whatever gun> as he just killed me." keep running through your head.

The spawning is a little funky, I hope there is room for improvement because there is a little too much of the getting ganked by someone spawning behind you.

Anyone know if there will be some equivalent of a Rumble skirmish? I get the urge every now and again to play Oddball, King of the Hill etc. but most people veto it when they come up.

In that case, I'm just as perplexed as you.

Agreed about the spawning (the reason I love objective games so much more than TS).

There was no playlist like that in Halo 2, so I can't see them adding one like that in Halo 3. I guess they have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to playlists, as having too many would mean finding matches would take a much longer time.

Remember when Bungie talked about an error after which they'd have you upload some info to them? It happened twice to me, in the same place both times in the same saved film. As luck would have it, I was capturing the match for a friend, so I got the Red Screen of Death on video. It's not entertaining viewing, and there's nothing remarkable causing the crash visible on the screen, but if you're curious I've put it up on Google video. Red screen comes up at around the 5:45 mark. If any Bungie people are reading this and want the saved film, I can easily oblige them.

That reminds me. I got a stick yesterday with a spike grenade exactly on the top of a guys head, so the handle stuck straight up. It was comic before he blew up.

Red vs. Blue is going to have a heyday with those.

haha nice:lol :lol does anyone have the link to the video with banshee getting blown up by the trip mine?

Awesome. I hate when you're SURE you stuck someone and it turns out you didn't. That's one way to make sure. :lol

Does anyone else have trouble seeing the bottom left messages on Snowbound and parts of High Ground? Maybe they need a different color. And maybe a darker color for your overshield meter. It's fine most of the time, but on Snowbound and while flying in the Banshee, it's kinda hard to see sometimes. :\

I think something is wrong with the host migration , when the host quits out and it goes to the black screen with the uploading text, not only does it take extremely long but it rarely ever returns me to the game instead booting me to the lobby. The people I was partied up with were saying the same thing...

It has never worked successfully for me - it always sends me back to the lobby.

It's worked every time for me. It does take a long ass time, though. You can sit there for 3 mins to play the last 10 secs of the game. I got the "black screen while stuff is still going on" today for the first time. It only happens in BTB.
