The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I applaud you Ghaleon, for your sacrifice in making Halo an enjoyable experience! ;)
It's a testament to the game that I can have fun sucking wind. If your game is fun while you are losing, it's gold.

That's what I keep telling myself, anyways.

Can Bungie please remove the K/D ratio on their site? More and more I'm seeing people not picking up a flag or bomb just because they want to keep their K/D high, or even worse refusing to play Skermish altogether. And, it will be nothing more the an incentive to cheat in the final game to rack up as much kills as you can.

I thought they would have learned their lesson with the leaderboards for H2 they use to have.

If you want to keep it how about rewarding the people that do the objectives like plant the bomb cap the flag, or even attempt to now.

No but how many kills were grenades a big part of. Anyway, you guys love it that way, and I don't. THat's it.

haha dont hate, you know youve been saved by grenades before. you know damn well you were gettin shot at knew you were dead and a lone grenade falls from the sky and kills the dude that was gonna kill you:lol

Yea, I'm not sure what the obsession with the K/D ratio is...you can play against scrubs all day in training modes, doesn't mean shit.

Yes, I use grenades all the time, yes they save me all the time, yes I get tonnes of kills, but I don't like it. I've said this a million times.

Hmm...So does anyone have advice or tips on meleeing I posted about earlier, since what I used to do doesn't work anymore? It seems to have been skipped over and all I really wanted was some advice, not some b.s. about "tears". Anyways, if someone could kindly offer a tip of some kind to help figure out why it's not working like it did or as to what works now, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Exactly. It means nothing yet you have people not wanting to play a game mode because of it. :lol

That is so true. If you suck at a game yet you still play then that game is gold. However, eventually you get good at it.

Training mode's the opposite for me. I play those because it gives me a chance to play people that're well beyond my rank level. Otherwise, since I don't play enough to reach those levels, it'd be pretty much impossible to fight them with the rating system.

The vast majority of people I've come up against in training vary from G1 Sargeants all the way to Grade 2 Lieutenant's. So if I'm playing with those people all the time and still end up with whatever K/D ratio it does mean quite a bit to me. Especially since I'm not a sniper whore and will skip the power weapons just because it's too easy to use 'em.

It was the same thing with H2 pretty much. I played it ranked heavily until the 2nd or 3rd rank reset. After which I didn't care anymore, so I just played to play, so custom/training was fine. It made even more sense for me, since after a while I only played on and off, and then non at all. Anyway, in H2 a lot of the higher level players played it because they didn't risk losing rank because of losses (plus the obvious "n00b pwning"). So custom/training ended up being great places to fight the higher ups for me then too.

The symbol rank really means nothing as far as skill, it just means you got a certain amount of wins/played the game a long ass time...I've seen Majors with a highest skill of 25 :P

Well, yeah... but you'd kinda expect these people to at least know what they're doing. ;)

Yeah seriously... the kill/death ratio stat ruins objective games.

On High Ground 1 Flag CTF I'm the only one ever going in for the flag. I manage to enter the enemies base, open the gate, and get the flag right near the outside and no one else even tries to sacrifice themselves to keep the flag in play. They'd rather let it reset so they can get some kills instead. It's really annoying especially when the flag is real close to the capture point.

Same thing on Valhalla when it comes to Assault. I'm the only one who ever even picks up the bomb, most people just go off the man cannon right away. You'd think someone would want to drive the bomber in a mongoose or something, but nope. Forced to slowly walk on foot and get sniped. none of the teammates even bother trying to protect you.

I almost feel like leaving those people bad feedback. If they don't want to bother to do the objective you should stick to rumble pit or slayer playlists.

Bungie tweaks stuff all the time in the Beta. They've already said that they've tweaked some individual weapon effectiveness, as well as melee in general, since the Beta's been out.

A few things to remember: Certain weapons have stronger melees than others (heavy weapons, brute weapons since they have the blades etc). Head melees do more damage in general than body strikes.

So now it's up to you to experiment and adjust.

I agree with that, but even in Skirmish, while kills some times (not all times) help your teammates, getting the flag out of the base or planting the bomb is a bigger achievement.

I love objective games and I don't care if I die more if it means saving the flag/bomb carrier.

Ok thanks man. I was wondering if courteous individuals had gone by the wayside here at GAF, so it was nice of you to prove otherwise. I appreciate the advice and didn't realize they were tweaking that aspect of the game as well. It's good to know these things and to also know that I wasn't losing my mind, in that I knew it worked before, which was the whole frustrating issue with the whole thing. Once again, thanks for the reply.

the discussion in this thread has reminded me to spam the l trigger when i'm going to die. all of a sudden i'm getting a bunch of those 'death from the grave' medals :/

i love grenades and melee in halo campaign, but honestly they both get on my nerves in multi.

well, i guess i should clarify -- skillful grenade use is awesome, on the rare occasions when i manage it myself, or even when it happens to me. but when you fight in cramped quarters and someone just farts grenades all over the place...you can outplay the guy and it'll still essentially be a draw. or if there are multiple people farting grenades! :x

melee just seems random to me, but i can mostly stay out of melee range

Today I had a glorious match - shotty snipers on High Ground. I learned that hiding in trees is awesome, because people will walk under you totally unaware. I was in the tree above the rocket launcher when an unlucky couple passed under me. I stuck the first guy with a spiker grenade, watching him wildly spin looking for me, only to blow up, and then assassinated the second guy from above. Awesome. Unfortunately I forgot to save the film.

I take it back...BTB 2 flag CTF does not exist!!!!

If we vetoed, we'd just get the same thing. :lol Every ****ing time except the 1 VIP round. Got bored of slayer (and the lag), so we went over to team skirmish out of frustration. Won every round of team skirmish, too ('cept the last 'twas a tie :().

I'm starting to play Team Skirmish again too. I'm getting sick of every single BTB match being Team Slayer on Valhalla. The one time we got something I wanted to play (1 Flag CTF on High Ground) everyone vetoed it, ugh...

This may be going a bit too far off-topic here, but I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice about video capture? (it's related to Halo 3!)

I run a small message board, and while we're all pretty bad at the game, we really enjoy it when things are evenly matched (either if we manage to fill a room, or get matched up with equally bad players) and it's quite cool being able to use the replay function to analyse our games and see what we're doing wrong, to see things from another player's perspective, or just to give an overview of the levels and point out where most of the weapons / equipment spawns. While I didn't realise it ingame, it was very obvious that my sensitivity was too high at first, for example, as I was always leading my targets too much. (normally I'm around 8-10 sensitivity on console shooters, but I find 4 works best for me in H3)

Right now, my current capture method is crap though - I'm using my digital camera for the video (it wouldn't be so bad if I could lock the exposure / white-balance on it) and optical into my MacBook Pro to capture uncompressed audio, which is then used to replace the crap sound my camera picks up. (oh, and I'm currently using iMovie HD for editing, which sucks - I don't think I can even crop the video in it)

Here's an example of an excellent game we had last night:

http://sr-388.net/videos/Halo3-3pt1.mp4
http://sr-388.net/videos/Halo3-3pt2.mp4

(when I say it was an excellent game, I mean it was a lot of fun - as I mentioned, we're all pretty bad)

I'd really like to be able to get some better quality footage though, especially if the replays aren't going to be able to be viewed in the final game.

Firstly, it'll have to be an external solution, as it's a laptop. I suspect HDMI is out of the question, but are there any external boxes that can capture progressive video at all? (presumably they'd be Firewire/Firewire 800 rather than USB if they exist, which is fine)

If not, I guess that means I'll have to use composite and switch leads all the time.
Would I see much difference between a cheap device like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-USB-2-0-V...QihZ019QQcategoryZ148483QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
and something like this? http://www.dabs.com/productview.asp...&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0
I'd happily pay more for that Pinnacle box if it gave me better results. (or anything else, if there are better options out there)

I'd prefer to be able to do everything inside OSX, but can boot to Windows if necessary.

Any help or advice is appreciated. :)

that's why the veto system is garbage

why not give every party a unique #

and the matchmaking system will determine what map and settings to pick from the last 2 matches the parties played. You need to force it on to people or else you get a situation like counter-strike... de_dust and de_dust2 taking over

Halo 2s system was near perfect except for the random same map / same gametype that popped up every once in a while

why would anyone veto what is the best gametype in the entire beta :'(

The problem with the Warthog, and vehicles in general, is that they use the health from the player in them. So if you blow up a Warthog and it's crippled but are still able to get in it, it's still indestructable since the person driving it always has full health. They need to give each vehicle it's own health meter like in Halo CE's campaign. This way people can't abuse vehicles.

Bungie should adapt the livery editor of Forza 2 to Halo 3.

It can be done! Make me proud Bungie! DO IT!
