The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Is the sword "on" when it's on the ground? People keep saying it has a "battery" do they mean charges? If it does show up on your body, will only the handle show? Wouldn't you cut yourself if you put it on your leg while it's on? ;b But, then it would be hard to tell if someone has it or if it's on the ground if it's just the handle.

I like that the weapons show up now too. It's easy to see who has what now. Plus, the needler looks really cool on your leg. :P

But they're in no danger sitting out of range taking shots at you. Someone who's not good with it can still kill you easily. 2x scope + no bolt action + sitting out of reach = win. Even if they don't kill you, they'll injure you enough so that a teammate can. At least with the sword you gotta get in the middle of the action.
 
maybe, but a good sniper also becomes the primary target pretty fast, coordinating can really screw a sniper over. A sword guy.. all they had to do in halo 2 was tap R and people died.

It has battery just like it did in H2 single player. Meaning you can only use it (actually making contact with the target) a limited amount of times now before it runs out. 10 to be exact.

Yes.

At least with the sword you gotta get in the middle of the action.
Yeah, for that whole one second it takes you to teleport 10 feet and kill someone in one strike.

The sniper gives away your position after the first shot. At the very least you can't "surprise kill" 15 people in a row with it.

I keep hearing people say "every one can use the sword" which is probably the most laughable statement their is.

I've seen people pick up the sword and can't kill anybody with it no matter how hard they try. I'ved dodged people who apparently have had little use with it and have killed them easily. Just like the sniper, anybody can pick it up and get kills with it, but not everybody is able to truly use it to its full potential.
 
Has anyone experienced weirdness with the spartan laser where it has a battery level other than a multiple of 20, like 67?



I've seen it a few times, and was wondering if it's a bug or what

Well it does fire multiple beams per charge. So maybe one of the previous firings were interrupted somehow? Player killed during perhaps?

Some times if you kill somebody when they're firing, they don't actually fire all five lasers. I guess that's how it works.

But in many areas in Halo 2's campaign there were a bunch of Swords lying around.

It had health in the campaign of halo 2..

A lunge was 10%, and regular slashes were like 3%

Ugh, I hate Gamepro so much, this was the first issue I bought in a looong time. There isn't too much text, which is a good thing considering how the writing is in GP. There are some nice screens of Epitaph and Last Resort, but the screens for the other map (Shrine) are sort of jaggy, and the angle they're from makes it hard to see what the map really looks like. The only thing I haven't heard people talk about is that there's a tiny picture of concept art from an unrevealed map.

Today I played my last game of Double Team. I'm done with that shit. I've only played ONE game where the person on my team didn't quit. The game that sent me over the edge was Shotty Snipers on High Ground where I lost 17-15 with nobody on my team except me.

What about it? It's about a half of a page, doesn't really reveal much. Players can have a "horrifying encounter with the Grunts." says Frankie, it's going to be a big game, Brutes are smart and awesome, etc.

I thought the distance was gimped for the sword. And to get the maximum leapage, you have to align that triangle. I hope they fix the current tractor beam for beat downs too. >< Unless maybe I missed reading about MC receiving a vacuum fist upgrade.

But you can fire multiple shots...I dunno how anyone can miss 4 shots in a row in the open field. :P

Assault rifle is now starting weapon. More powerful than SMG. Takes whole clip to kill somebody. Has longer distance than SMG. Pulse fire is best.

Shotgun is more powerful and reliable.

Sword is nerfed. Has battery, only ten kills. Less distance.

Pistol has five shot headshot kills, no scope, slow rate of fire.

Carbine more powerful, same rate of fire, longer distance, larger clip.

Battle rifle is exactly the same.

Sniper rifle has more recoil, longer wait in between shots, less aim assist.

Beam rifle is same except less aim assist and less shots. Only ten shots in beam.

Rockets don't lock on, have smaller splash area.

Laser is your friend. Takes five seconds to charge up but instant kill on all vehicles and people.

SMG more powerful up close. Brute Spiker is very powerful up close. Use both in close combat dual wielding.

Brute shot actually sends people flying. Doesn't bounce, has more rounds, more powerful.

Plasma and frag are same if not a little less powerful. Brute grenade sticks to anything, shoots spikes out.

Glowing blue ball is power drainer. It drains shields of anybody near and will kill them.

Octagon glowing orange thing is trip mine, destroys all vehicles and people who touch it or get near it after deployed.

Glowing purple thing is a grav lift. Deploy it to be able to fly up higher and get over obstacles.

Long round silver thing is bubble shield. Deploy it to put an impregnable shield around you. But vehicles and people can come through.

Needler is more powerful and has faster rate of fire.

I think that's about it.

I do believe the sword was in need of some balancing. A moderately skilled player could get more than 2 or 3 free kills in a game thanks to it, and a pro was simply unbeatable with that weapon. I remember losing a couple matches to people with less skill than me just because they happen to spawn near the sword, total luck, also I have beaten people in matches I should have lost thanks to the sword, again just got lucky spawning close to the thing. This spawning luck is what should erased from the game. The most skilled player should always win and nothing if possible should happen because of luck.
 
Sorry to sound like a troll, but it's ridiculous to have this sort of lag when you're paying for a service. First, we were all dropped mid-game, after a few minutes of that "loading" screen of course. Later, I was trying to play Team Slayer but it was a little difficult: too much lag to pick up a weapon; the Banshee started flying before I was actually in, by a few seconds; I was killed by a Sp laser before I saw the laser animation [it appeared afterward, as I was flying to earth]; I tried to laser someone else, but because he was teleporting around the screen in fifteen-foot jumps, it was a little hard; then I wasted a laser shot on the same guy, because he was already dead but his body did a ten second pre-death dance so I thought he was still alive and teleporting.

I realize it's called a beta, but it's really a demo, and this is all just too much. I'm starting to think that Shane B. was right about Live.
 
This beta is a stress test, are you retarded? Pdz ran perfect on live with 32 players, i'm sure halo 3 will be cleaned up by launch. Bungie/Microsoft really should record the people who are actually complaining about the beta and disable their ability to participate in future betas, they obviously don't ****ing get it.

If i get host then we never lag. I have 15/2 internet and whenever given host we have lag free games, and back in the Halo 2 days people claimed it felt like they were playing on host while on my host.

Bungie just needs to get their net code right so they always give people like me host.:)

It must suck though when theres 16 people in a BTB match all on DSL.

Yeah, that's right. I'm retarded for expecting to be able to, you know, play the game. My mistake.

And as I said, it's not actually a Beta. It's a PR device, so that argument doesn't fly anyway.
 
give proof of that or stop talking. The game isn't done yet, bungie released the beta so people could report problems, not so you can cry about this or that. Got lag? Report that the game is laggy for you so they know to have it fixed later. The game could lock up and freeze every 10 minutes and a smart person would say 'well, it is a beta'

Had the best game EVER last night. I had 46 KILLS in a Big Team Territories game while manning the warthog turret. Wouldn't have had that many without my driver though. I gotta give huge props to GAF's own SiameseDreamer for being the best goddamn warthog driver out there. Seriously, we had the missile pod locked onto us about 4 or 5 times during the match and Dreamer got us outta there every time. Not to mention the battles with rival warthogs and banshees that we came out on top of EVERY TIME.

Seriously, they gotta figure out a way to make assists part of your ratio. I'm only like 30 assists short of equaling my number of kills. Say like 3 assists equal 1 kill.
 
I just had my first good ctf game in halo 3




I was +25 in kills as well, and it was my 200th game! I think I might quit while I'm ahead and stop playing the beta now

Yup. I betcha Bungie is kicking themselves for not putting out a Beta for the previous two Halo titles. Had they done that, they might of sold a few copies before they hit the bargain bins.

Can someone give me some advice?

Every time I kill someone, my shields are down or partially depleted from the firefight, and I get hit by someone off radar or behind me before I can do anything. What am I supposed to do? It's just kill/immediately get killed/spawn/kill/immediately get killed.

Help plz.

be constantly aware of your surroundings. do 180s to check your back almost continually, and dont rely on radar to keep you safe.

the radar in this beta has limited range anyhow and is only useful to crouching noobs with shotguns or duel wielders. yes, you shotgun crouchers on snowbound are bad.

also, this beta has horrific spawns so more than likely the persons teammates are just spawning behind you; with this you can only hope they improve the spawn system in the final build because its flat out horrible right now.

spawns are fairly predicatble in fact. on high ground for example, if your on power drainer ledge with a carbine or needler, look over to the left cause someone is bound to spawn any moment.:lol
 
Sounds like Bungie went overboard with the sword. I haven't used it yet, but there was no reason to lessen the lunge when they already nerfed it by giving it a charge.

I don't get why people find this annoying at all.

1) You don't get spawn killed by any snipers or anything.
2) There's lots of useful weapons down there - battle rifle, plasma pistol, missile pod, sniper rifle.
3) It takes exactly two seconds to jump from the bottom to the top of the base and go off a man cannon or grab the mongoose or whatever.
 
Interesting note, you apparently don't lose your medal rank if you drop down below the skill level requirement to unlock it. I unlocked Captain (skill rank 20 /150 RP required), then made it to 22 or so, but then started getting put in terrrrrrrible teams (no one I know from here is ever on ._.) and despite making MVP and getting more kills than my entire team combined, we'd still lose. I dropped 3 straight ranks in like an hour or so but what's interesting is that I'm skill rank 19 (w/156 or so RP), but I'm still Captain. I'm curious if I drop enough games to drop my RP below 150 if I'd still have it or not. Just thought that was interesting, not what I expected to have happen, but still pretty cool, since we all have bad streaks and whatnot.
 
Well yeah, the button combo is no longer BXR, but it has the same effect. I'm not going to reveal it because I don't want Bungie to take it away :lol You could probably find it if you looked around though.
