[SEMANTICS]Yeah, but none of the Spartan II's are below the rank of CPO, so technically all Spartan II's are Chiefs. [/SEMANTICS]

What about making the plasma pistol track vehicles like it did players in H2 and remove all the tracking against people?
The Plasma Pistol tracked players in Halo 2. Not vehicles. It already stalls engines in the Warthog and Mongoose. Now you want it to track them?!

Maybe instead of the Missle Pod in Valhalla, they add Rockets.

You should have read more closely, I said, track vehicles like it does people in H2. Shooting a warthog with a PP is suicide, even if you hit it, you still get mowed down. The risk just isn't worth the reward. Shooting a banshee, sure I've done it, once, against a moron, but against someone who knows how to fly, it's nearly impossible.

Add how the PP completely ruins VIP and you've got another issue.

Right now, it's an unreliable weapon, that gets very limited use. I'm just trying to give it a reason to be picked up more regularly.

I'm currently rendering the footage I extracted from that Gamekings preview, we'll have a stream up in about an hour. It's got got all the new gameplay footage without the boring chitchat in between.

PP should short out the gun on the hog too dammit. Actually, it'd kind of be interesting if it caused Covenant weapons to overheat. I agree it needs something though.

either i've regressed or i've leveled too high in rumble pit, because i got my ass kicked repeatedly and mercilessly today. ideally i'd take out my frustrations in campaign, but that's months off, so halo 1 will have to do

I agree it should have more tracking to vehicles. Right now it's pretty difficult to get a shot off on an experienced banshee pilot. I think disabling the turret on the warthog as well would be a nice tweak too, cause as you said you usually get gunned down quickly.

How does the plasma pistol ruin VIP? If you get hit with it, either your teammates are not defending you or you're not protecting yourself good enough. PP is a very important part of VIP games IMO.

I've been using the plasma pistol more than ever in Halo 3 personally... Usually on Valhalla I take the noob combo (plasma pistol only for disabling vehicles, battle rifle for killing people in the field cause of it's range).

Has this been posted?

Excellent direct feed footage of Zanzibar and maybe some other "cathedral" like map with glowing stuff.

Also includes interviews with various bungie folk... mind you the presenter and the interviewer is speaking dutch but not the guys at bungie.

Also another thing, they tagged Halo 3 as a Xbox 360 and PC game at various times during the video, but then again they said it may come out at November :/

It gets really good after the 3:40 mark.

PP should definitely knock out the 'Hog turret. But I don't have too much trouble taking one out. Although, I only ever attempt it if I'm in the bases and have Plasma Grenades, then do my best to stick the gunner or flip it over before the gunner knows what's happening. I'm really happy they added the feature, though. So satisfying.

Check the previous page. I'm currently working on a higher quality (484 x 363) version at the moment with all the Dutch crap cut out. ETA is about half an hour.

edit; Ok I embedded it on my site, unfortunately I can not show it to you without linking to the page. Hope it isn't considered spam...

Plasma Pistol is my least favorite weapon in the Halo universe.

First of all, regular shots do nothing, making the primary fire completely useless. You never, ever see someone fire regular plasma pistol shots. Is it even possible to kill someone with it? Maybe if you've got 5 minutes and they're standing still. Why make it so useless?

Bungie listened to the complaints from Halo 2 and made some subtle adjustments to the PP that make it less annoying... most notably lowering the tracking and the ammo depletion while you're holding a charge. These are both good things. Still, this one shot takes away *all* your shields leaving you one headshot away from death. If your enemy is in tracking range, there's still nothing you can do. I haven't been killed by the PP/BR or PP/weapon X that much (especially compared to Halo 2!) but it still seems like a cheap weapon. And yeah, it ruins VIP. I mean, you can stick the VIP with a spike grenade, get a direct sniper headshot, or a direct laser hit and the guy will still be alive. ONE plasma pistol charged shot, though, is all it takes to bring him to no shields status?

The added function of stopping vehicles is cool but in practice not really a big deal because it doesn't stop the biggest threat of all -- the warthog turret. if you get close enough to PP, you're close enough to get mowed down in seconds.

I don't have too huge a problem with it on VIP. On Valhalla, both teams have a pair to pick up and on Snowbound the PP is offset by the needler, which is a VIP-killing machine. PP might be a little better because you can sneak up and use it fairly effectively up close for a plasma punch, but at midrange, the needler is just as effective.

But yeah, the primary fire is a joke and I don't even know why the charge isn't it's only fire if it's going to be nerfed so hard. Would be cool to see it deal a good bit of shield damage with the standard trigger pull, making it useful for anything else besides disabling vehicle engines or as one of two components of the noob combo.

I am damn glad they toned the tracking down though. It was so easy to abuse in Halo 2.

The Plasma Pistol is odd, I think they could make it workable if they did some changes. Make it so it only removes one shield layer of the VIP, hell they could give the minor shots a slight freezing effect like the plasma rifle did in Halo 1. That could make it slightly more usable.

In Halo 1, it is a useful weapon in both Campaign and Multiplayer.

Then again, I also thought the Halo 1 needler was pretty devasting weapon when used well. I haven't played the Halo 3 beta, but news of a soupep-up needler sounds like overkill to me.

For any times that I've been stuck as the VIP I just keep to close quarters and look out for a glowing Master Chief running my way. Its not that hard to avoid since the tracking got the proper toning down. I can still PP/BR combo people though and I know they're cursing a storm after the fact. I've still noticed that the Plasma Punch tends to send people flying.

I like this idea and it fits with the secondary fire. A full burst drops shields and disables vehicles, standard shots freeze their target very momentarily. Would make for a nice support weapon all around and the slow rate of fire would keep it from being a cheap kill while at least giving it some punch outside of the noob combo.

And yeah, Karg, getting hit with the noob combo is still really frustrating. Ran into a General last night on Valhalla that was ace with the damn thing. He camped and by the time you knew that he had you in his sights, your shields were gone and you were taking a BR grouping to the back of the head.

50 megs it is...

So here I am, a few pages late. Damn, Epitath looks incredible. And I know it's probably a trick of the light/camera, but around 3:24 on the higher quality version, I swear that looks like motion blur as the player backs into structure.

Btw, is there going to be any kind of "going away" party on the last day of the beta? Be nice to get a large group of Gaffers together for some games on Sunday. Assuming we can get everyone away from Forza 2. :)

I don't think the plasma pistol should track vehicles to the extent of how it tracked people in Halo 2. I could see it tracking a little bit. But I was able to disable a warthog that was destroying us last night with a plasma pistol. I chucked some grenades and eventually died, but my team was able to finish this off, which is what matters. If you have a coordinated team, the plasma pistol can be useful against vehicles. I still say the warthog is way too powerful though.

The last few slayer games on Valhalla have been people camping with snipers, warthogs rolling out and the other poor sap just hiding in the base waiting on a hog or a sniper.

I agree. The PP has ruined VIP.

Looks like a number of other newspapers are doing stories on the information covered in the Gamepro issue, similar to the Canadian paper.

The cover of one is posted here: http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=807677 with a cool shot of some new armor customization. I haven't tracked down the Gamepro yet, so I'm not sure if that image is new or not.

Another article in an Australian newspaper, but no new information or images yet.

Also, Penny-Arcade did a strip on the Halo Clix tabletop game.

I was going to say this too.

It would be nice, but dual-plasma rifles in Halo 3 aren't bad at all. They kill pretty fast.

I agree. The PP has ruined VIP.

And I definitely agree. VIP is tuned pretty well as far as weapons go aside from the Plasma Pistol. The pussy combo still reigns supreme here. It should only drain one shield. Not both.

That is way better imo, alot more simpler, better looking and better use of colours. Still, odd to see that they both share the similaritie of Chief Obstructing the Logo/name.

I believe that is a new one, I've never seen it and I've seen the Gamepro ones. Very bubba fett like.

Why do you care? I thought you were springing for the Lengendary Ed?

It's certainly better looking than the other one, but I'll be going with the CE, so it doesn't really matter to me. :lol

This is true. I just love the Halo artwork and found the cover on Amazon to be a bad redition of it. The piece the xbox.com cover is taken from is one of my favorites. However, I suspect it's just a placeholder - I've never seen a cover for a game be taken straight from existing artwork before.

Maybe the artwork was in preperation for the box art? I remember A LOT of artwork showing the Chief with the orange clouds and phantoms every where for Halo 2.

Er, the regular case will be in the helmet though, iirc.
It does? Meh. CE ftw.

In any case, you certainly won't be looking at it nearly as much if one went with the LE.

giga said:
Wait..so will the Limited Edition have that cover as well? Or is it tin? Or will the legendary have tin cases?
The Legendary is just a bunch of normal cases (with the helmet/holder of course). So yeah, it'll have whatever cover is the real normal one on one of said cases.

The CE is the tin case with the plastic sleeve.

Yeah, the pose and location were straight from the OXM cover, and the coloring was from the "Golden Campaign" artwork. But the actual cover art was new - just familiar. The xbox.com one is small so it's hard to tell, but it looks like a cut/paste job from the "Emotion" piece.

Hm. CE is the way to go for price/features for me then. $70 right?

I'm all confused now. I don't know which edition I want to get (it's between CE and LE). I might go back on my earlier decision and get the CE. Hmm.

So, Halo 3 boxart is up on xbox.com, and it's not the fugly amazon cover:
boxhalo3.jpg

Okay, two observations.

One, that cover has the M rating on it, the first of any I have seen to do so. Given that it's from xbox.com, that could be one additional sign that it is official. Even that Amazon cover had "RP".

The other is that it's NOT a copy/paste job as I'd said earlier. It is a modified version of this art:

H3_EmotionLandscape.jpg

Note the relative positions of the Chief and the sunset. Since the source art was actually changed for the cover, that also leads me to believe it might be legit.

Yup, it's in the GamePro, but really small in one of the top corners of the first pages...
