The Halo 3 Beta Thread

This first art got me thinking that how awesome it would be if for the climax in Halo 3 we have to walk on one of the Halo ring where space is limited and melee is the your main weapon. At one point you have to run upside down so you gotta run fast wearing some kind of special suit. And finally Mongoose run to reach the detonator.

It's my theory that that was Gravemind. It's been implied that he can interface with computer systems - he uses Installation 05's teleportation system to move the Chief and the Arbiter

i finally got that while replaying halo 1 and seeing mc teleported a couple times -- i had always vaguely thought that gravemind had MAGICAL TELEPORTATION POWERS. which, among the many reasons to object to gravemind, struck me as one of the better ones

BTW Ghaleon, I'm new to this, is it okay to post the thread with just the link and edit it later? I was hoping to beat certain "slow" people. And you.

I gotta say that the Halo 3 Zune is probably the coolest electronic device I've ever owned.......

*sigh*

I have no idea what to do. There's what seems to be an AWESOME device, the Halo Zune, packed with art, pictures, and OSTs and all sorts of miscellaneous assorted goodies. And I want it. But it's pretty much a known fact that sometime soon MS will be releasing an updated Zune, probably with a bigger screen and a larger hard drive. And I want that too. I'm torn here GAF, what do I do?

Since this is the "Official GAF Halo-Related Thread Full of Messy Posts" Thread I figured I'd pose the question...Is anyone here playing Halo 2 Vista? How is it? I enjoyed Halo: CE on PC and I'd consider getting Halo 2 Vista for my laptop just to experience some of Halo 2's maps again. Or maybe I'll just throw it in my 360:lol But the Xbox version's Matchmaking never really brings up some of the maps I want to play like Backwash and whatnot.

And how are the Vista exclusive maps?

My plan to purchase this one was scuttled today by a request for a massive Costco run after work, but before dinner. Should we venture anywhere near a Gamestop over the weekend, I will procure one. Otherwise, I will snag it on Monday.

I was hoping to load it up with my music and other stuff - all the podcasts I listen to come out over the weekend - but oh well.

I realize this may come off as superficial, but - how's the box?

They've been impossible to find in stores for a few friends (Ohio, Nevada, and Oregon). The stores only have enough for pre-orders. Buying online may be your only option.

Noted, thanks. I'll call ahead and take that route if I get desperate. Which is to say, on Tuesday.

Any canadian gaffer already ordered something from gamestop? How's the shipping/customs? Looks like the Zune is not sold over here and I really want the Halo 3 one. :(

I would like to know too.

The box is very nice. Its also nicely packaged inside the box. I'd take some pics of it if I wasn't so completely inept with computers and stuff.

The software takes forever to load though. But, I like the earphones better than the ones that come with an iPod.

I've been messing around with it some. I'm not sure if I misread what it actually does, but I can't seen to get it to connect wirelessly with my 360. Is it not supposed to be able to do that?

I don't think so. Wireless is for trading only, I think...

Yep......appears I read it wrong, but the website makes it a little confusing if you're just skimming over it. The website says "Stream from Zune Software to Xbox 360". Obviously, they're talking about the Zune software on your PC.

It should hook up through USB to 360... Just like iPod

Few more things:

- I don't like where the earphone jack is located on the Zune. Its on the top righthand side. Would have made more sense to put it on the bottom like the Nanos.
- When you install the software make sure you don't click the two options that makes the Zune automatically load all your pics and vids. I unintentionally loaded a bunch of workstuff that I haven't figured out how to delete.
- At first glance, the Marketplace isn't as intuitive or as fast as the Apple store. I downloaded a song, but it said it wasn't available even though it took 79 points from my account.

I've been replaying Halo and Halo 2 single-player ever since beta ended and I come to a weird conclusion. I'm finding Halo's visuals a little more appealing to the eyes then Halo 2 at the moment. Halo 2 visuals are definitely more advanced with bump mapping and stuff, but the bump mapping in Halo 2 isn't the "best" and sometimes it makes things look muddy. (I'm playing on a HD set btw)

?? This is the same place iPod video has it. Thats not that big of a problem.

I have a question regarding the bonus content in Halo 2. When they talk about the troubled development of the game, they mention something about the general story of the game changing, maybe 9 months before release, obviously not something that made things easy.

Obviously, the new story we got is in Halo 2 right now, but where was the game heading before that point? Standard Earth invasion like we saw in the teaser and E3 trailer?

Question about Halo 2: voice communication sounds very low quality and almost inaudible, and its only when I am playing Halo 2. Even messages I want to send to someone, when played back, sound like crap, yet the person on the other end says it sounds fine. Its almost like the voice com output is being dumbed down in only Halo 2. All other games and functions on my 360 sound fine through the headset. I have played around with Output and Masking settings, am I missing something? It is super annoying.

I think the outline was basically the same but the levels were different. Halo 2 was meant to span 9 levels, the last level being the Ark site on Earth. They had to rework all the level designs as it would have been impossible to finish the game on time. So instead of epic sandboxes we got small sandbox tubes and the story/script was changed accordingly.

That's how I got it, puzzled together from hints and vague comments, so take it with a grain of salt.

i don't think you are missing anything. The sound quality through my Communicator is crappy on halo2 also. when I leave people messages are sometimes static-ey.

But I can still hear okay during the games, and my partners. I do get a slight hissing noice when I use my Wired controller however.

Its just something you have to deal with, but if you are finding situations where it is INAUDIBLE then I would suggest either trying another headset or trying another controller. My headset seems to work better with my Wireless Controller

Frenck was basically right. Once you are in the middle of development and you decide HOLY CRAP WE AREN'T GONNA FINISH THIS GAME IN TIME the final levels and of course the rounding out of the story has to change/be cut. Which would also mean they had to remove stuff during the earlier parts of the campaign that would have been revealed at the end of the campaign.

So i'm sure they just mean that it was heading in the same direction, but like Frenck said, it was supposed to end on Earth, not on the way to Earth

Holy hell. I just played a handful of Halo 2 games. A few for the H2 Challenge that is going on. And I can easily say...Halo 3 shits all over it.:lol I don't really think I can play Halo 2 long enough to give myself a chance in this H2 Challenge. Not that it's bad it's just...The subtle improvements that are in Halo 3 makes it so much superior.

Do you play any other normal Xbox games? You may encounter this on those, as well. It's because the game isn't a 360 game. You noticed on Halo 3 beta, if you played it, it remains fine.

The voice-communication in-game for Halo 2 is normal. I use a 360 and haven't had any problems whatsoever. Like I said before, though, when sending voice messages through the system, it may sound static. It is because the game is a Xbox game.

The Spartan III's need to look more like this and less like the Haze-ish character designs that were in the Gamepro magazine.

I just want to SEE Spartan III's in the game. Give me that and I promise I wont be picky about how they look.

*fingers crossed*

Why do you want this? They would have to explain their existence too much, and it would down play the significance of you being "The last of your kind".

It happens with every Xbox game through BC. In fact: the maximum headset volume on the Xbox 360 is lower than that of the first Xbox.

The models of the Spartans have been around quite a while. Not since recent.

Well I already know i'm not the last of my kind, so No heartbreak there.

We've already seen new multiplayer models, and we can all agree that we think those are Spartan III's, or they strike a strong resemblance to them.

Working them into Single Player would not be such a tall feet.

This game is already going to blow your head through your anus, why not toss in some SIII's.

As much as I hate to say it, I agree that it's probably to late to introduce any other spartans, Dr Halsey or many of the other story aspects that are in the novels.
I was so excited after reading First Strike because I thought that Halo 2 would follow the storyline of that book atleast to some part.
Much to my disappointment Bungie seems intent on ignoring all the awesome scenarios and storylines that are in the novels.

Just imagine.. instead of playing as the arbiter (I liked him, but still) you shift between Master Chief's mission to save earth etc. and the other group of spartans (you could play as Kelly! Fast running ftw!) that are trying to survive on Reach, exploring forerunner structures underground, going to Onyx and meeting the Spartan III's and so on. Then at the end of Halo 3 they could have this awesome moment where the Spartans reunite and "finish the fight" together... oh, well.

Because the Chief isn't the last of his kind (hell Bungie acknowledged this in the graphic novel themselves, even if they deny that things like ILB and portions of the novels are canon), and while this may be the last game that tells the Chief's story, it's not the last game in the Halo universe. Why not have a nod and wink or something about other Spartans (Is, IIs, or IIIs) being out there to carry on other battles (to be featured in other games).

I imagine so, but I wish the models would model up with the cover picture of the Halo novel Halo: Ghost of Onyx. I know Bungie didn't copy Haze or vice-versa.

I've read all of the novels. I KNOW he isn't the last of his kind, but not everyone has read the novels, and if they added them to the games, there would have to be a big explanation. I don't want them to waste time in the game by doing that.

Also, is anyone here still playing the beta?

The last two who were still playing on my friends list got off yesterday

OK, I'm playing through "The Library" level again in Halo: CE. Something I never paid much attention to before is the fact that the Flood are using both Covenant and UNSC weaponry. Explain that to me. Isn't the Library supposed to be sealed off? Or are they just geting in somehow after taking up host in the bodies of Covenant and Marines they killed elsewhere on Halo? How do they know where the Library was located (since 343 zapped MC there)?

The Flood includes human zombies... who were armed with human weapons before being killed. So if the Flood is there, no reason why the weapons shouldn't be. Duh.

As for knowing where the library is, Guilty Spark has an answer to that...

The Flood are already hard at work repairing your vessel. Its parasitic nature belies the Flood's intelligence.

The Covenant were the ones who first let the Flood lose, so they probaby suffered lots of casualties. The outbreak was raging beyond the Library, and the Flood were using the Sentinal transit ducts (the pipes they keep jumping out of) to move around.

As for the intelligence part - I like how that line hints at their attempts to get off the ring. A nice hint at what they do in Halo 2, taking over In Amber Clad, then crashing it into and over-running High Charity.

Well, yeah I figured that. I guess I was just confused how the Flood got in the library with the weapons because I was thinking it was also a containment facility.

Sentinel ducts.......that makes sense. So, what is the exact purpose of the Library?
