The Halo 3 E3 Campaign Trailer

So questions:

Brutes can pick up and use bubble shields? The one that got sniped was carrying one.
The passenger of the flying Warthog was holding a fuel rod cannon. Was it possible to give the AI heavy explosives previously? Why can't I remember and more importantly why can't I remember even trying...

The problem with this trailer is that it looked more like an attract scene on an arcade game. Bunch of random action bits, but no real purpose in many of them. It was cool to see some of the visuals though, which ARE better than the Beta...but aren't gonna blow anyone away really. A few too many scenes with the Chief holding the gatling gun

YEAH! EVERYTHING SUCKS!

The Microsoft event was th only time these games will be seen!... Its not like E3 runs for the next few days or anything.

Do you know how to tell when your AAA franchise has just had a mediocre (if not poor) unveiling?

There are several die-hard Sony fans here posting in this thread who have taken every opportunity to bad-mouth the game. At last year's E3, when we all saw that incredible "finish the Fight" teaser, they were merciless in their criticism. Tonight, these same people are subdued and almost sympathetic. A few have even had kind things to say about the trailer.

That's how you can tell.

Anyone who thinks those graphics look anything other than phenomenal is kidding themselves. Ok, the trailer might not have been the most inspiring thing ever, but that combined with the new screenshots prove at least how good single player is looking.

I mean look at the grassy foliage in those jungle screens... never before has forresty undergrowth looked so convincing in a game.

Wow, so many new things:

- Arby + MC replacing Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as best on screen buddy team ever
- Non wussified Scarab fight
- Johnson getting owned by Brutes
- Warthog variants
- Emo Chief
- Drones being way cooler than before
- The new (???) Halo ring looks bad ass
- Epic space battles
- Lara Croft cameo
- Longsword action
- Guilty Spark having the last laugh in his rivalry with Cortana
- Arby taking karate lessons from Chuck Norris
- Civilians for the win
- Epic vehicle assplosion fests

Add :
- UNSC Ships firing their MAC guns :D

Great trailer. Maybe it´s not someone cup of tea, but Halo2 HD? Give me a break. Sometimes I think that even if the SP looked exactly the CG trailer some people here would come and say meh, bland, boring, etc.

Trailer was great. Showed a lot of real combat from the game's Campaign in small doses.

The press got to see something else behind closed doors, right?

Yes, and yes.

Is this driven by a reserved optimism that KZ2 is better or a silent fear that it isn't though?

MS as a whole just got ravished for going first. They did a solid conference, not much different than anything they've ever done. It's just going first means having to brave the preposterous expectations of the masses.

Dude that's a 1080p bullshot rendered in 2000p or something like that. Just watch the 720p trailer, you see aliasing and lowres leaves everywhere.

Oh noes, lowres leaves! Bomba am confirmed!

I think Bungie is acting pretty arrogantly by not doing a gameplay demonstration and by putting out this poorly editted trailer. The original unveiling of Halo 2 was the absolutely perfect way to build hype for a game. This trailer feels like something someone threw together in an afternoon because MS told them they needed to show something. Bungie is either so obsessed with not revealing anything about the story or so certain that the game will sell even if they do nothing to hype it that they barely made an effort to sell their game.

That being said, I thought some parts of the trailer looked quite good. The shots with the Banshee showed great draw distance. The lighting is awesome. The scene where Chief jacks the Chopper is very graphically impressive, but other parts were lacking. The scene where the brute kicks the marine was disappointing on every level, especially animation. The only new gameplay tidbit I saw was that brutes can use bubble shields (maybe other equipment as well, who knows).

I don't care what the trolls say or complain about the graphics in Halo3. Halo:CE was phenomenal and Halo2 was awesome. I'm convinced Halo3 has solidified my purchase of a 360.

I'm easily convinced and impressed.

Why did that indoor garaage area look EXCATLY the same as it did in the Brute vidoc? I knew it. All this crap about "alpha footage" and how it will look so much better was false. Bungie is so overrated. The brutes look terrible and so do the marines. The animations look so bad and canned I can't believe this is the biggest game on 360 and they gave us graphics like this. Microsoft should have their ass and disband them after this game ships.

So, is that the Prophet of Truth talkin' it up in the beginning?

No Michael Wincott? :(

That was actually confirmed in an earlier update... Or here... Maybe both. :P

I hate to even bring this up, but have some of you considered that some of this footage isn't recent? There was a scene or two with the 4th grenade type we saw in Alpha footage from the Brute ViDoc.

That said, it all looks great to me. Thread has harshly reminded me of why I usually stay away from GAF around this time. There's a lot of gameplay-related stuff in the video to get excited about.

I just re-watched the trailer and I think it looks totally fine, and achieved what it was intended to do.

Bungie have said so many times that they dont want to give away a single piece of the narrative. This little motage of random single player scenes was a way to give us an idea of how it looks without spoiling anything.

The lighting, geometry and textures looks incredible. What the hell else do you want?

When the original Halo came out I hadn't seen anything that impressed me particularly until about two weeks before it launched. Even then no single element of the game blew me away, but as a whole the experience stcuk with me in a way that games like Super Mario World, Street Fighter 2 and Super Mario 64 did. I think it was the neat little details, the amusing alien speak, co-op warthog sections, plasma grenades - everything just came together so well (library level not included in that statement of course).

With Halo 2 the expectations were that much higher and Bungie/Microsoft revealled more information prior to the launch. As with most sequels (films etc included) it was difficult to live upto the expections.

With Halo 3, however, there has been very little revealled regarding the the single player mode and I reckon there'll be loads of clever little surprises that wow players. Personally, I can't wait to find out.

Assassin's Creed, Halo 3, PGR4, Bioshock, Resident Evil 5, Mass Effect, Devil May Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto IV, Burnout Paradise, Super Mario Galaxy, Metal Gear Solid 4, NiGHTS, Heavenly Sword... with so many AAA titles on the way I don't know how anyone could be disappointed with this year's show. Still, some people are never satisfied.

Why did I take you off ignore again? :lol

There were lots of cool elements in the trailer but something to me just felt a little bit off...I can't really put my finger on it. It's not the graphics as I think they're great, more the pacing and way it was put together.

I didn't expect to see so much gameplay footage funnily enough. I remember the Halo 2 cinema teaser which only showed like 3 seconds of it, but that was awesome . This seemed to be a lot more stuff thrown together, it didn't really suit the music for me. Perhaps it's a style thing.

I think something a minute long with a more cinematic feel would have been fine. There's enough story elements in this I don't think revealing story stuff is an issue.

The Halo short rocked though.

Just my 2p

The graphics were good. Not great, but certainly not "OMG HALO2 IN HD" comment worthy. The graphics were on par with current AAA FPS that are on the market. Certainly a far cry (lol pun) from what Gears of War, Mass Effect, and Uncharted offers.

Although, my biggest gripe were the animations and some of the more open areas had a lot of flat scenery.

Buzz word of the night: underwhelming. Certainly not garbage though.

I think the graphics have a noticeable difference from the alpha footage (for one thing, it runs at a smooth 30 FPS now), but you have to realize that from now to September Bungie will only be polishing the game, and not adding any extra content. The only question is how much of that polish will be graphical, and how much will be gameplay.

I thought the graphics looked serviceable and I'm sure there will be some moments that blow us away, but overall I'm unimpressed. I was just expecting more from MS's flagship series.

I am pretty sure the MC in the trailer was the exact same model used last year, only green instead of metallic. Look at all of the MC close up shots and compare him to the model in the last trailer.

yeah absolutly the same

the model is NOT the exact same because the artists went back and changed the "concrete armor" look. this was confirmed at least a week ago. aside from the brittle armor the model is exactly the same looking.

That fourth grenade type is not visible in the shot they released. Maybe it's one added during the course of the game, in certain situations.

'Hog variants are definately in.

The model is the same. Only armor's textures were changed, and for artistic preferences.
also worth pointing out one is a cutscene and the other is in-game, and there has always been a disparity between the two, although it's far, far, far, far less pronounced in 3 than in 2 it would seem.

If you actually followed Halo 3 threads instead of jumping on a percieved "opportunity" to trash the game, you would know why the Chief doesn't have the "cement"-like armor anymore and that it is the same model.....

Uninformed age

Reality age:

This was gone over in the first campaign trailer screen. Bungie confimed in that thread the following:

1) The model uses the same geometry
2) The source texture was originally modeled after concreate, and they replaced it with a "hardened metal" one the artists preferred.

The kind of lighting and situaitons you are comparing are not similar, so it's tough to compare the lighting. What's there in-game looks good, though.

I noticed the same Halo 2 like pop up in the trailer and Halo 2 on 360 looks smoother than this. This game combines the muddyness of Halo 2's visuals but without AA resulting in some parts a worse looking game. The animations, dear lord, look undescribly bad. The framerate even is bad especially noticable in the spaceship battle. I said they should have used UE3 but I guess Bungie thought they were too good for that.

"This is what Halo 3 will look like"-Bungie HAAHAHAH :lol :lol :lol :lol Oh my, I can't believe I could beleive that after what happened with Halo 2. Bungie sucks.

I wasn't initially impressed by the trailer, but after watching it a 2nd and 3rd time, the scale of the game is pretty amazing. There is so much stuff going on, it's ridiculous.

Co-op is going to be something else.

Seriously WTF@trolling. Man I can't wait to see the Killzone thread after the trailer completely fails.

lolol did i troll good guyz?
