The hardest game you ever finished

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System on hard

Especially because the game saves your health/ammo situation for the following level, and even if you replay it later, you're stuck with what you finished with the first time through. So if you fuck up and finish level 3 with only a bit of life left, you'll always start level 4 with that much life. Sounds like more of a design flaw than a challenge, but whatever.

That, and the first time you fight one of the final bosses he is about 100 times bigger than you and also invincible D:

Ninja Gaiden 2 (i accidentally missed the staff/rod for the bonus challenges but i still managed to beat the whole game without the bonus power-ups/health in Warrior mode. Was tough beating the final 3 bosses without any health potions either.)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Time Crisis

Beat everything in this list when i was a kid. not sure if it's still hard if i play them today:
RayStorm
Einhander
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Chip & Dale
Yo Noid!

Yeah, that has to be Ikaruga.

Such a bitch of a game but probably my fondest gaming memory playing co-op with my sister.

I always hear people cite it as being ridiculously hard, but I don't remember it being that bad. Though I beat the version in Super Mario Bros. DX, where you could save at the end of each world.

That version is missing half the levels.

Most of the memories for those type of games would be from this evil little system:

Sometimes you have to wonder tho.. were they hard for the wrong reasons? I mean c'mon Battletoads was horribly unfair... Ghost and Goblins? TMNT?

BACK TO THE FUTURE.. hahaha theres so many

I sometimes think parents told Nintendo to make all games on the platform impossible. Back then adults(or at least very few) didn't play games so being a kid and only getting one or two games a year meant you had to master what you had. While games like Battletoads were stupid hard, it probably was best so I did't get bored :)

Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge for the Super NES.

I mean, good lord. This piece of shit was mercilessly hard, and nearly impossible to beat due to there being no continues after losing all of your heroes.

But, back when I was a kid I would get a new game maybe once or twice a year, so I basically had no other fucking choice.

I still have nightmares about how hard this game was.

I'm surprised the AVGN ignored it in his Spider-Man compilation.

Probably the most impossible game ever-
(never finished it because it was too hard)

TheBattleOfOlympus.jpg

EDIT:
probably a tie between this too
(no walkthroughs back then made these sooooo hard I just gave up after a while)

hmmm not v impressive but probably ninja gaiden sigma on ps3, personally amazed I persisted. TBH what with time constraints etc I am happy to complete any game, story based ones which grab me aren't a problem but something like clearing f zero gx is just not going to happen for me :lol

God Hand is perhaps the game I would love to have completed most, was doing ok and then kept getting repeatedly slaughtered by
the woman in the circus cage
damnit, I know its not even that hard but I think I ended up there without any health items, must give it another go one day. Also hadn't learned dodging effectively with the right stick, saw some vids of how its done and would love to be able to nail that. Being able to do some of the ridiculous beatmania tracks would also be cool sigh..

Does Teenage Mutant Hero (Shut up, UK'er here) Turtlles for the NES count? I found it very easy when I was a 6 year old, 18 years on and I can't play it for toffee.

I never played Battletoads for NES, but I did play and finish Super Battletoads on SNES. I'm not ashamed to admit that I spent days memorizing those levels inside and out (or at least did). It did make for a great spectator game to see how stupid hard it was.

i dont get many games so these might not be all that impressive....

I got the Big Boss Emblem in MGS4. no alerts/ no kills/ no deaths/ no rations in under 5 hours.

currently playing through FFIV for the ds and its actually fairly hard.

that emblem is pretty hardcore :D

Probably not the most epic, but I beat Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne through to the true demon ending, which is more a test of endurance and dedication than anything else.

One or Chaos Legion. Both were brutal.
urk, I have both of those and haven't completed either. Chaos Legion suffers from insanely long living bosses if I remember correctly.

I remember Star Wars Shadows of the Empire being really hard... but I think I just wasn't as good of a gamer back then

Also, the Duck Tales game for game boy was tough too, but probably for the same reason...

I also beat that Star Wars pod racing game, although I have no idea if it was all that hard or not, but for some reason I'm remembering yes.

Getting 100% of the game and finally fighting the super secret end boss "The Dark Demon"... fuck me. By F A R the hardest boss I've ever fought in 25 years of gaming.

I beat this as a kid, never thought it was a big deal but the interwebs seem to believe that Mike Tyson is impossible or something. *shrug*

I got all XS ranks in Trauma Center: Second Opinion--on everything :D I was doing it with New Blood as well (TC2, also) but stopped because other games got in the way; luckily, I did XS quite a bit of the missions :D.

Um...I did EBA on the hardest difficulty.

...That's pretty much it :(

Here's some....

412EE5EYSCL._SL500_AA250_.jpg
(Mostly FF2, but FF1 too)

(Referring to expansion in pic....including Apocalypse Nigh quest)

:lol
Joke post!

Also on DDR doing "Max. (period)" on Oni (never beat on heavy though ;;), and Paranoia Survivor Max Heavy (never beat Oni ;;). Were a bitch, but ALSO MaxX Unlimited Doubles Mode Heavy. These are ZOMG. Also I don't rape the bar.

I usually don't like hard games so I don't play let alone finish them. The only hard games I managed to finish are the ones that sucked me in from the start and could see a light at the end of the tunnel regarding building a skillset.

So Halo 3 on legendary and Mirror's Edge.

Battletoads on NES. Single player, no warps used.

Ahh, the unlimited time for games when I was 12 years old. :(

Haha what? I played through both Faxanadu and Battle of Olympus before I even understood English! :D

Both games are average at best when it comes to difficulty. I'd say Journey to Silius poses a higher difficulty than these 2 games.

Probotector on GB. (I think I was 10 years or something)

The end boss was a bitch...

Me and a friend found a spot in the game. Enemies kept jumping down, and after a couple you got 1up... (which kinda jumped (the iup thing).. and landed on my character) I placed my character there, put something heavy on the fire button (think it was a small rock) and kept the Gameboy on the whole night (volume off) In the monring we had 99 lives.

After finishing the end boss I only had 18 lives left...

Playing a hard game is one thing - finishing it is something different!

For me its: Mega Man 2 on the original Gameboy

I never played a game that is so hard again but i finished this beast 2 times when i was a kid and it was a realy great moment.

fun game and i had thought i had completed something really challenging, which was rewarding... gameboy double dragon was another one

supermonkeyball.png

I never thought I'd do it. Completing all 50 expert stages then 10 expert extra stages on 3 lives just to get the chance to play the 10 Master stages seemed impossible and I thought I'd still be trying on my death bed. Somehow I did it though.

funnily enough, i thought of bionic commando rearmed for the thread of the games i quit out of frustration and of another bionic commando for this thread. The horrible amiga conversion of the arcade, which the awful port from the st version made completely unplayable, with enemies dropping directly onto you, you absolutely had no chance of avoiding and a terrible push-scrolling which would often make you fall to your death for no reason at all. Only thing that kept me tryin was tim follin soundtrack, as soon as i was done recording it on tape i threw the game out of the window.

I´m surprised that not that many have mentioned Mega Man 9. I reckon that games tend to be to easy most of these days, and with Mega Man 9 arriving I was really happy about playing a game that would kick my ass. But the last Wily stage was a living nightmare and did more that just kicked my ass; it humiliated me. At one time, I was affraid that I wouldn´t be able to pick it up and finish it. But I did, and did I ever scream?
Another game that just came to my mind is last years Castlevania, Dracula X Chronicles. I completely loved the game, and I think that my love for this particular game wouldn´t be what it is today if it didn´t challenge me like last Christmas.

My next projekt will probably be Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer.

CoD4 on Veteran. It was bad enough that when I was done I kind of wished I just hadn't bothered. But I'm a wimp, never been much of a fan of extreme difficulty.

I finished it this year, it's much harder than the original Mega Man 2 on NES, partially for the small screen and I also think that they changed the physics or whatever they may be called (like, I can't do what I'm doing in here).

Mine would be either Ghost 'N Goblins or Castlevania NES. Those really pushed me to my limit. Lots of cursing and broken stuff.

Oh, and Chip's Challenge.
21mz2xc.gif

I was about to say TMNT, but I never actually finished. =\

And I don't remember how I came about owning the game, but that picture of Chip's Challenge brought some memories back.

Super Monkey Ball (all levels... stupid fucking camera)
Demon's Crest
Punchout
Superman GBP (released at the same time as Superman 64... horrible controls)

F-Zero GX. Didn't beat or even unlock all staff ghosts, but I did everything else (Very Hard story mode, all cups on Master, and all character videos).

Or S-ranking every single song on all difficulties in Ouendan, Ouendan 2 and EBA.

Perfect Cherry Blossom
Took me about 2 years and is easily my proudest achievement in gaming.
(By "finish" I of course mean 1cc)

COD 4 on veteran. Once I had finally beaten mile high level I declared to myslef never play any COD game on anything but normal difficulty until they sorted out the respawning enemies shit.
