I picked up Justice League Season 1 on Blu-Ray. I'm using my PS3 on an SDTV. Shouldn't it fill the entire screen? Why is it shown in a box, centered in the middle of my screen?

Why in the hell would you even attempt to use bluray on an SDTV?

You have your choice of 480 resolution....or 480 resolution.
I hope it's just temporary until you can get a good TV for the goodness of HD.

I bought the PS3 before an HDTV because I wanted to build my library of Blu-Ray movies first off. I mean, why should I keep buying the films I want on regular DVD if I plan to move to HD soon? Also, I can hook up my PS3 to my widescreen Samsung LCD via HDMI-to-DVI cable.

Kinda circular logic, why buy movies you cant even enjoy yet?

Just an opinion, but I'd wait until I had a HD to get movies. Dunno.... to each their own.

That is a waste of money. And how exactly can he not enjoy them? He has the player, and he has plans to upgrade to an HDTV, buying DVD at this stage of the game would be pissing away his money.

I bought Blu-ray for 6 months after I got a PS3 when I still had a CRT that topped out at 480p, and even then it still looked much better than DVD. And then I picked up a big ass sexy Bravia. There's no reason not to buy Blu-ray if you're making the high definition jump in the near future.

Same reason I think it's a waste of money for people to buy games for a system they don't own yet.

Like I said to each their own. It's just pointless to me to buy media for format you dont own yet. That format being HDTV. To be honest i cant say how youd think Bluray looks better than DVD on a SDTV. 480 is 480 no matter the source.

Netflix? HDTV should be the first step. I could never go back to standard television. I get far more use out of the HDTV + HD cable channels than I do the PS3.

Did you miss the part where I said I also have it hooked up to my 22" widescreen monitor via DVI? I'm not without HD, I just don't have a bigscreen HD set in my living room.

It's not the same thing at all. He actually has the player for the movie. What is he supposed to do if he wants to watch the movie right away? Buy a DVD and then a couple of months down the line when he gets HDTV, buy the BD? That's a complete waste of money.

Again waste of money if he plans on owning the movie anyways. Unless of course you know for sure you can find the movie on sale down the line.

Geez guys do we really need to lambast the guy for buying movies when he doesnt have a 70 inch hdtv yet? Chillout a little, we're all friends here.

Even at that price I'm not in. I'm already embarrassed by the handful of HD-DVDs that I do own.

God what a dark time that format war was.

That is a silly attitude. I'm sad about the few HD-DVDs I bought at full price before the discounting, but the ability to buy high-def copies of movies for less than $10 is AWESOME. Just because no new movies will be released doesn't mean you can't enjoy the existing movies.

It is a full 1080p copy of the movie that you fully own for less than the cost buying a movie ticket for the theatre! It is great.

Holy shit, I said to myself 'there's no way he's talking about the show, he must mean the a/v'. That show is just bad.
If by bad you mean completely loaded with awesomesauce and awesome references to the first two movies while completely ignoring the abomination that we shall not speak of then yea its bad.

Do we know anything about the Blu-ray release of Amelie yet? I really hope it's region free but there will probably a french release later, as long as that has English subs...

Even thought it's been out for a few weeks, the Canadian disc only now has been confirmed to lack English subtitles. Sorry!

I don't understand Disney's logic in putting a whole disc in the digital file when they could have easily put an iTunes redeemable coupon in it keeping the price down...can you play taht other disc in your player? I haven't tried.

Well it's more that I don't want to invest in software for obsolete hardware. If my Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on ever craps out, that's it.

I guess I could buy a backup unit for $50 and keep it in the closet :)

I'm very tempted to get Firefly on Blu-ray even tho I already have it on DVD. I'll definitely get Serenity on Blu-ray tho.

I can't wait for Iron Man and the special features in it.

Most of those HD-DVD exclusives are going to get re-released on Blu-ray anyway. And in the case of Transoformers, the Blu-ray version is supposed to be even better than the HD-DVD one. That's certainly a reason to avoid HD-DVDs.

I also think it's completely pointless to be owning HD-DVDs when that technology is already obsolete. That's the exact reason why I held off on even caring about HD movies until the whole format war ended.

It would seem like an odd stance to have if one has access to both formats already. Toshiba ending HD-DVD production doesn't change the fact that technical obsolescence is a much smaller factor now than it was just a decade ago thanks to an endless number of online resellers, and hell, just look at the gaming forum. Outmoded hardware isn't stopping anyone from continuing to buy games for system that are no longer supported.

My player works fine and will presumably continue to (I've only ever had one piece of electronics fail on me), otherwise a replacement is easily and inexpensively obtained, and movies -- which you point out are either on or may be reissued on Blu-ray -- are a fraction of the price. There's really no downside (especially for someone like myself who still finds there to be a larger amount of appealing content on the failed format) aside from the "uncool" perspective.

The only difference with the HD-DVD release of Transformers is the audio, which is True-HD now. The video encode is the same as HD-DVD.

Bay didn't really put his word into it imo.. I would have bought the BD version if it had a new video encode.

And seeing how most people still have 5.1 sets and don't have true-hd support.. it's meh. I would also go with the HD-DVD version if you could get it for cheap, HD is HD.

Also saw Vantage Point this weekend on BD, movie looks very good imo. The actually flick was enjoyable at best.

On the HD-on-SD debate, I've got a friend who still doesn't have an HDTV but buys all his movies on Blu-ray and has done since he got his PS3 at the Japanese launch. It makes sense because you're not going to be re-buying movies that you bought in the last year when you finally do go HD, and also because even at 480i Blu-ray looks better. Better colours and pretty much no compression artefacts, which is a big thing with DVD as you get into bigger screen sizes (his SDTV is something like 50").

I watched Hot Fuzz this weekend on HD-DVD. Didnt really find the film that funny but the PQ is amazing!!

This film has to be one of the best HD releases for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Its the best transfer I have seen for sure. Plus it only cost me £5 :)

Agreed, not the funniest movie but damn did it ever look sharp and gloriously detailed.

There's still quite a difference between the pinnacle of HD releases... and the rest.

Not sure if anyone has posted this but Fry's has the Panasonic DMP-BD30 on sale for $267. It's only profile 1.1 but still a hell of a deal. I just picked one up along with Hellboy for $22 Volver for $24 on Blu Ray and Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix on HD DVD for $12. Sony's new player was also on sale for I think $329.

Any Wes Anderson movies coming to Blu? I just watched Rushmore for the first time and I loved it, right up my alley as far as comedies and movies in general go.

Bottle Rocket from Criterion in November.

Also, in some awesomely ironic twist, the Bluray versions of Criterion's releases are actually cheaper than their DVD counterparts by about $8 on Amazon.

1.1 is really all you need. 2.0 just adds the internet features, which are usually just blatant advertising gimmicks to buy other stuff. 1.1 does all the pip and java stuff.

$199 Profile 2.0 or bust. I have my eye on the Sony player, though I saw a Sylvania BD on sale at Radio Shack. I'll have to check if it's 2.0 or not.

Wrong, take a look at what Transformers is doing with 2.0. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. IMO, if you go with 1.1, you'll be disappointed once BD Live starts to gain even more traction.

I need, NEED, Darjeeling Limited + Hotel Chevalier on Blu-Ray.

THIS. I mean, I know it may seem obvious from the avatar, but this is my most wanted Blu-Ray hands down. I still can't understand why this wasn't day and date with the DVD, Darjeeling is an absolutely beautiful film that needs to be seen in the best possible quality. I just know as soon as I actually purchase the DVD, that's when it's getting announced.
