The HD Movie thread

After the formal news that came out this morning regarding Toshiba ceasing production of the HD DVD format, we got word this afternoon about how Bandai Visual USA will be handling their release of the Freedom OVA series on the Twin Disc format: "[W]e will continue to release future installments of FREEDOM on HD-DVD / DVD Twin-Disc Format. We do not want to abandon our fans that have purchased FREEDOM 1-3. Retailers will soon stop carrying FREEDOM 1-3, but they will be available via our dot-anime.us (http://www.dot-anime.us) website along with the future installments." No word about any potential plans for the series on Blu-ray was included in the statement.

Lol, Bandai wasn't handling it well when HD-DVD was actually doing well. Anyway they have nothing to lose by releasing it on HD since the hybird discs can be played on standard DVD players, they just need to realize that most people aren't going to want to spend $35 for less than 30 mins of animation... of a glorified ramen commerical.

That reminds me, I know this was in the other thread but not sure if it made it in here..

Bandai Visual will ship the Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Trilogy Box on Blu-ray Disc with English dubbing and subtitles in Japan on July 25. The box's limited pressing will include The Laughing Man, the 159-minute compilation of the episodes that deal with the Laughing Man nemesis, and the similar 161-minute Individual Eleven compilation. It will include the 109-minute Solid State Society television movie. A bonus disc will include about 180 minutes of extras, including a new Tachikoma na Hibi video short and documentaries on the projects' designs and production.

Japanese Blu-ray Discs can play on North American Blu-ray Disc players and vice versa.

Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Trilogy Box
Length: 676 minutes (planned)/(496 minutes for the main features plus about 180 minutes of bonus features)
Video: Color/16:9 (1080p High Definition)/AVC
Audio: Dolby TrueHD (Japanese 5.1ch, English stereo)
Toggable Japanese, English subtitles
BD50G, four discs
Manufacturer/Distributor: Bandai Visual
Release Date: July 25, 2008
Price: 29,400 yen (about US$275)

Nice, I might have actually cared if I didn't already own the entire series on DVD, and if it weren't so damn expensive. I still wonder why they didn't release SSS in HD, I would have loved for that to have been my first HD anime purchase instead of Freedom... :(

Great news to have Paramount back on board. Now all movie studios can join in on the marketing blitz and burn the blu-ray name into consumer's minds. Trailers on all regular dvds, mentioning blu-ray on all commercials, etc...I expect blu-ray to really start taking off this year, especially once all hd-dvd stuff is off store shelves...

I have GITS and Innocence on blu already, and I have both S.A.C sets on dvd as well as SSS, but will stil end up getting these unless word peeks in of a us release ( and provided I can grab a deal somewhere :lol )

I can only justify double dipping when the price is right, or the difference between the two versions is astounding, and still, the price has to be right... I paid enough for the SEs of each volume of the series on DVD. That is one area DVD still has the advantage in, packaging... unless they do somethign really special for this release.

I can understand that.
Hopefully we can start seeing even more North American releases.

Hey guys, I found some time ago a link here on neogaf to an article which compared different hd movies and ordered them by image quality, but I can't find it anymore :( does someone remember it ?

Yeah, it was SO off topic.

It was. I really wish bish had kept that other thread open for those stragglers who have no interest in discussing movies but instead just want to debate format war crap.

on-topic: For a fan of Steve Carell and someone who owns 40 yo Virgin and Evan Almighty, is Dan in Real Life good for a blind buy? I missed the theatrical run.

Also, is anyone here going to the movies LESS because of HD media? I feel like with HD discs and my HT setup, I can get a comparable experience to the movies without paying. I still go to the BIG movies (I'll be there in line for Dark Knight), but I tend to stay home most weekends now and watch movies with my wife.

edit: Hey Wollan, your link is screwed up.

Does anyone have any comments for The Life of Brian or The Rock on bluray? I just ordered them on Amazon after reading some nice reviews. Can't wait till there are more Monty Python films in HD :)

Life of Brian looks amazing for a film of its age.

I just bought Casino Royale and Memento in preparation for the PS3 I will buy next month. The price was too good to pass up.

The quality of Casino Royale was awesome, can't say the same thing about the movie itself. :/

Just saw Superbad on blu-ray, and the title describes the PQ. Very soft images and colours are weak. Didn't care for the movie itself, only watched the first hour, didn't realize it was 2 hours long! Ugh! It as like watching a live action film of gaf.

I'm looking for a receiver that supports Audio out, so I can *finally* get audio to my TV and not just my receiver.

Anyone know any decent recommendations under $500? Preferably Onkyo. 2 HDMI in 1 HDMI out is a must.

Yay for all movie studios on board!

Yeah, I go to the movies less often.

And Poly, it's not that I don't think Enderle is an idiot (I skewered him constantly in the old thread) but this isn't about DD vs Blu-ray, it's about movies. Reviews, news, releases. Paramount's announcement is OK because it's about their impending release of HD movies. Enderle's FUD about digital distubution is not.

The Rock audio will blow your house, BBQ, and pool away. It's AWESOME.

Actually, I thought it was a pretty good movie. Granted, I like poker.

The poker in that movie was laughably bad. I really liked the action and the story overall though. And it looks fantastic too. Casino Royal and the PoTC series were the biggest motivators for me to go Blu.

I want that 605 SO BAD, but I'm upgrading my speakers first. I just ordered some Sony bookshelf speakers off Ebay. I'm SO ready to hear lossless sound and DD plus.

I know the playing was bad ... I just liked the premise. :p

I agree though, I thought the overall story and acting were quite good ... as were the action sequences. Plus, the cinematography was generally good as well. A very enjoyable action movie IMO.

And obviously, the transfer is really nice overall.

Speaking of, there's an actor there that is the worst actor I've EVER seen (not counting Justin Timberlake as an actor). He's the black FBI (?) agent who gives 007 his money to continue playing.

He's TERRIBLE!! He sucked in that role, he sucked worse in Broken Flowers with a terrible fake Jamaican accent, the Invasion, and Lady in the Water. I know the latter two were bad movies anyway, but he simply made them much worse. He has no range, no skill, no believability. How does he get a job???

I noticed his terrible acting once, and now he keeps showing up in movies and I can't ignore him. :(

oh snap, I just read his wiki and apparently he's won a bunch of awards so maybe he's a great stage actor, but he's sucked in every film I've seen him in. :lol

Yes, I'm going to the theater less often.

My screen is 61", my couch is comfy, the fridge and bathroom are nearby, and I'm never disturbed by late-comers with their loud candy wrappers, crying children and cigarette-smelling clothes.

I think my girlfriend enjoys it even more than I do!

wha wha wha...? Do I sense someone bad mouthing Casino Royale? Only the best bond movie ever!!! haha

Can't wait for the sequel, I hope they don't ruin the great direction they're going in.

Jeffrey Wright is awesome, ESPECIALLY in Broken Flowers.

The reason CR kicked so much ass is because it was so believable compared to all the previous movies. Unfortunately I only own the DVD (Wal-Mart exclusive with the weak ass poker set) since I got my PS3 after the movie was released. I should have mailed in the rebate for and got it for free from Sony back when the were offered buy 2 get one free by MIR, but I got lazy and never sent in the forms...
