The HD Movie thread

I'm not a wrestling fan, but it looks incredible on their Friday night show on CW or whatever network. They do a top-notch HD presentation, I imagine their PPVs will be equally exciting.

Has anyone seen any top-notch boxing or mma in HD yet? I've seen some mma fights in HD on HDNet but I want to see the huge matches in HD. I bet both of those sports benefit in a similar manner to wrestling.

Of course, wrestling is not what it used to be, but I'll be getting The Score HD (in Canada) to check out how Raw and Smackdown look like in HD. I'll probably get an HD receiver in time for WMXXIV.

This just boggles my mind. It wasn't even that thick of an accent.

Maybe because I interact with Jamaicans and folks with lilting accents every day, but it was terribly off. He also has a pretty expressionless face, which isn't a good trait for an actor. But I digress, it's just derailing the thread.

Although, the movies I mentioned are in HD (aside from Broken Flowers). :D

Reminds me of my cousin from Donegal.
When he came down last time we went out, the next day my friend was like "Your cousin is pretty cool but that was the fakest irish accent that I have ever heard, why are they doing that".
Good times.

Anyone seen The Descent on BD? I just love that movie. It has been out for a while, audio and video are good.

I have still yet to see it and I have heard great things about the PQ and the movie itself.

The quality of Casino Royale was awesome, can't say the same thing about the movie itself. :/

Just saw Superbad on blu-ray, and the title describes the PQ. Very soft images and colours are weak. Didn't care for the movie itself, only watched the first hour, didn't realize it was 2 hours long! Ugh! It as like watching a live action film of gaf.

Superbad looks shit? thats disappointing because Knocked up looked great.

Juno on Blu-ray, but no Darjeeling? FU Fox!

This. Darjeeling would look great in hidef. Actually All of Wes Andersons movies would (maybe not bottle rocket) man is a master of design. Still i liked Juno enough to buy it. Cmon Fox Searchlight give me Anderson movies and Sideways in HD!

I want Life Aquatic on BD so bad.

The Descent is good aside from the horrible "badass chick" angle it starts to take. Ugh. It makes me cringe everytime the camera zooms up on one of the girls after they kill a monster and they're giving a "badass" look. Other than that it's effective.

well only the two strongest survived, and that "look" is the primal instincts emerging, a transformation of character.

Superbad DOES look great. It has sort of that retro 70s color and lighting to it, on purpose. It's not a bright and colorful movie by any means. I thought it was a nice change of pace.

Good news, looking forward to it then.

Pinocchio will be the second Platinum Blu-Ray release from Disney, day and date with the two-disc Platinum DVD release in 2009. Likely March, but it could be bumped to October. However it looks like March as Disney wants to re-release Snow White in October 09.

Thats because superbad does look great. It was a digitial transfer and the colors are vivid. I think djkimothy may need to recalibrate his TV. :\

I didnt notice any softness either.

Maybe it was stated recently in the thread and I missed it, but I'll ask anyway: When exactly is Sleeping Beauty scheduled for release?

Also, any impressions on Michael Clayton PQ yet? I doubt I'll buy it, but I would like to rent at Blockbuster. The closest store has about 100 copies on DVD and 1 (already rented out) copy on Blu-Ray. If the PQ is poor on Blu I'll just rent the DVD.

Sleeping Beauty is October.

Disney releases two Platinum titles a year: One in March and the second in October.

This year's Platinum titles are 101 Dalmations on two-disc DVD in March and Sleeping Beauty on two-disc DVD and BRD in October.

Okay, so I'm confused.

Watching multiple Blu-Ray adverts, I've seen Wedding Crashers make an appearance more than once, on MORE than one occasion...yet I can't find a solitary whisper about a release anywhere. Not on New Line's website, High Def Digest, Blu-Ray.com, nothing. Anyone know wtf that is about?

Also, what the hell is the hold up with Californication and ANY kind of release announcement for DVD / Blu-Ray? I honestly thought it would be coming out, you know, nearly half a year after the season ended. What gives?

Well, I wasn't impressed compared to Departed, POTC, ratatouille or casino royale quality. It's still HD, just not as good as the top tiers.

OK maybe it was my cold affecting my vision, but I wasn't impressed compared to the other titles. Everything else looks sharp. Just not superbad for me.

I remember Sleeping Beauty having amazing animation as a kid. hope it holds up.

Regardless of whether it does or not, (yes, it does) it's going to look fucking great in HD. It was shot in Technirama, which has a Vistavision-sized (read: huge) negative area, plus they're likely spending a shitload on the transfer.

:lol That gif will be useful for years to come in this thread. Thanks guys, eagerly awaiting these :) I really need an upgrade in the audio department. Optical just doesnt cut it when it comes to PCM tracks :(

I just watched Close Encounters, great movie and nice to watch in HD since it would have looked pretty bad in SD. Sci-fi movie that doesn't feel the need to answer every question. Also very impressive technically for the time it came out.

So the transfer is good? I was looking at picking it up since Target sells it for $35.

Yea, I bought a Sony HDMI receiver today ($299 at BB) and while I still have the same dinky speakers, the audio sounds much better through HDMI.

well since i'm a totally inexperienced at technical stuff and I tried my best to set it up myself, doesn't the PS3 only have one HDMI port? I assumed you used that for your video - and you use the optical for your audio. :*( or at least that's what I've been doing.

HDMI carries both video and audio in one cable. The optical port on PS3 is provided in case your receiver doesn't support HDMI.

Or you get conned into a cheap HDMI receiver that doesn't support audio over HDMI (Sony makes one).

30 Days of Night was a pretty damn entertaining, gory, scary movie. PQ was incredible for such a dark movie too .

Movie 4/5
PQ 4/5

I haven't checked out the special features yet, but I'd say it's worth a buy.

I can't wait for Wedding Crashers. For some reason, I have two copies of the dvd at my house. They look great, so I can only imagine how much better the BD will look.

Also, I can't wait for Sleeping Beauty. My daughter's growing up fast and it's great that her first exposure to the Disney classics will be in HD. :D

Isn't Finding Nemo for this year too? And Mana, do you know the two releases scheduled for next year? Is Lion King one of them?

Superbad is listed as tier 1 release on sites that do that kind of stuff..

Yes, it was one of my first BDs.

I wasn't sure I liked it at first--the all-female cast seemed to lack personality--but at the end of the day, it's a fairly gripping movie, and fascinating in a morbid sort of way.

I've watched it twice and will be back again when I need a good scare.

PQ was pretty good considering all the low-light situations.

Close Encounters on BD looks as good as it's going to get. It's very nice. And having all three versions of the movie and all those bonuses packed in, well, I'd say it's a must for anyone who loves movies.
