Really? Both Wall-E and Up are 16:9 for me and I don't see any option for other display modes. I have my TV set to it's 1:1 pixel mode.
 
Why are people so upset over aspect ratios? Can't you just change your tv aspect ratio if you want to cut off the part of the picture the director wants you to see if you hate it so bad?

I just want to watch a film on every inch of my expensive TV - I don't give two shits about what the "director wants".

Edit: I know that makes me sound like a prick, but I've had to show so many people how to zoom the picture on their new DVDs because they think they're TVs broken - the "director's intention" speech doesn't fly with the majority of people.

Exaclty, I remember when widescreen became popular, it made sense having everything wide and didn't mind black border. Then I bought a widescreen TV and I get no blackborders (or forced stretching), but a few years later I see films that are extra wide which brings back the shitty black borders.

"Extra wide" films aren't a new thing. They've been around far longer than widescreen TV and haven't suddenly appeared in the last few years.

Hell, there's a film about Napoleon from 1927 that was shot in 4:1, which would look like this on a widescreen TV:

Look at Junglebook in widescreen and tell me that where they crop the top and bottom so you lose people's arms to make fake wide screen so that it "uses every inch of my expensive TV". I don't see how other people not understanding a reason for you to do it.

i paid £50 for it so it is cheaper then that, does the US version come with the book?

I don't know but it just looks like a box set so I'm going to say no? The box looks bigger for the UK but that might just be deceiving whether it has the book.

No. You guys get the cooler edition. I did get mine for $40 right around its release date, though, so I really can't complain.

O fuck, you're right. I just assumed the bluray was the first result and it was more expensive. Wow, good thing you proved me wrong, I was about to buy the dvd by accident. :lol
 
I just got a Blu-ray player, and was checking out the release lists for the next few months.

The Lord of the Rings got me excited, then I saw it's the fucking THEATRICAL editions? What in the fuck?

yeah i posted a couple days ago, Peter Jackson said that Warner are just money grabbing fucks, release theatrical and then release the extended next year to hopefully get people to double dip. i have since decided to wait till the extended cut version next year. but might double dip on the hobbit/lotr boxset in a few years.
 
On the Extended Edition, I want the option to watch Theatrical Cut - like on the Gladiator BD. I consider the theatrical cut to be the definitive cut of FOTR; it's the one that I fell in love with all those years ago. Dwarf love? Voice-overs? Pfft.
 
I also think there's something to be said for the theatrical versions. I like the EEs as a fan of the books, but they do have some things that I don't like as much, and I've always enjoyed the theatrical cuts as well because they were how I originally saw things. That's why I'm going to buy this set anyway, assuming that it has top-notch AV, because I still have and have watched both versions of the DVDs.

It's pretty clear that the EEs are being held back until it's time to start up the hype train for The Hobbit. The first part's not out until the end of 2011, though, so there could be quite a wait.

I'm assuming this is an import? My love for early Wong Kar Wai knows no bounds, but damn if importing all these overseas Blurays isn't hard on the wallet :(

I want to say that the Criterion version is the US version since it is the only Blu-Ray version available. I'm not sure what that means for the special features. They may be different than the Criterion edition.

Criterion is indeed the best-bet but according to the back of the box, Paradox edition has "over 70 minutes of bonus features" or something. Ugh, complicated!
 
Did netflix underestimate the holiday blu Ray player sales? I know they've always sucked on BD availability, but it's getting ridiculous now. You just can't get any new releases. My top 14 movies are all red.

did you ever get around to watching pride and predujice? This review made the jump in visual quality seem huge over the original dvd version.
