Alternate ending for I Am Legend was a lot better than the theatrical one. Still not the 'greatest' movie, but certainly good. Seeing what the 'Dark Seekers' could have looked like, actually made me appreciate this movie a bit more than I would have if they used real people. God it looked terrible.

Watched Things We Lost in the Fire last night. The PQ was WOWsome. Incredible detail in every shot. Especially evident because they have so many extreme close up shots, but the detail on the textures of clothes and other objects is top notch. The Paramount movies I've seen (Transformers, MI3, Shrek 3, Heartbreak Kid, and now this) have all had stunningly good PQ. The audio is capped at DD Plus (which is more than enough for my setup), and the extras are bare-bones, which is disappointing.

About the movie, it pretty much only worked because Benicio and Halle are such good actors. There wasn't much there otherwise. The story just meandered along, but the acting performances and the tension between them kept the movie interesting. Benicio del Toro is the man.

I finally got around to getting the third Priates movie in the Target sale.

Sooooooo good looking. I fell asleep about 30 minutes in, my wife made it to about the 2/3rds mark.

I think I'll just pretend the 2nd and 3rd ones didn't happen.

I don't get it. You liked it better then 1 & 2, but neither of you could stand to finish it?

I watched Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds the other night, great show. The audio is just nothing short of stellar. Hearing all the intonations and vibrations of every string on Dave's modified Martin D28 and Tim's Martin D35, some very very nice guitars get to shine with the audio on the disc.
Tim Reynolds is an amazing guitarist, that was the first time i had seen arpeggios on an acoustic guitar.

Yeah, this is the tack I took as well. Love the first one, watched it a bunch of times on both SD-DVD and Blu Ray, but I have never been tempted for even a second to buy the last two movies. The falloff in quality between the first movie and its sequels was even worse here then in the Matrix trilogy.

I finally JUST YESTERDAY got the free Blu Rays for the PS3 I bought in *June*. Get a load of this crapfest:

Transporter 2
Blazing Saddles
Underworld: Evolution
Corpse Bride
Invincible

Ugh. I even already own the Underworld sequel, I got it as a freebie with some long ago promotion. They included a postcard that said, "The movies you specified are no longer available, please accept these alternates". The only one I actually ordered was Invincible, which is good because that's the one movie my wife really wanted.

WTF Sony? Now that you won the battle you can farm out your BRD covers to high school kids using Paint Shop Pro?

That is an accurate representation of the quality of the film within the case. All films should follow this criteria.

Blazing Saddles is no "crapfest"

Blazing Saddles is one of the greatest film comedies of all-time. It's still so edgy that you probably couldn't make that film today. And the transfer on the Blu-ray is remarkably good for an old film.

Corpse Bride is a good film too.

Hell, I though Transporter 2 and Underworlds Evolution were pretty fun actioners as well. Certainly not total crap.

I liked the movie itself quite a bit, it also looks pretty good, I agree with HiDef's 4/5 video quality. Some of the vistas look great on the HD DVD, but the special features are bare bones and only in SD.

If you like the movie that much and intend to get multiple viewings out of it I won't dissuade you from the double dip, I would imagine not having seen the SD version myself, that its a different experience in HD.
I don't have the SD version actually.

I was waiting till it was lower priced, so I could pick it up for cheap on HD DVD, but my brother-in-law had it, and we all watched it together at his place. Great movie.. I'll definitely pick it up when I see it cheap.

I bought Enchanted on DVD today (I have to get both, one for travel purposes) and lo and behold no $10 coupon. wtf. I knew that was going to happen too. dammit. Now I have to cheat the system! why you do this to me, Disney?

I disagree about the quality of PoTC 2 and 3 (hey ignatz, if you want to sell PotC 3, send me a pm).

But I agree that those movies you got were crap. Aside from Corpse Bride. I got a couple of crappy movies (Stir of Echoes, Flight of the Phoenix) for my free movies, but I also got Full Metal Jacket and The Prestige so it's all good.

I didn't think Pirates 2 was awful, just not good. The first one was pretty darned good. I haven't even made up my mind about 3, becuase the opening bored me so much. I'll probably watch it again soon and decide.

My point was as described-- such a wonderful looking transfer, and yet in the service of something so dull.

Van: I may take you up on that.

Oh, and Blazing Saddles is awesome!

I got the movie when it was something like $20 back in December. Still haven't watched it yet. With your comment, it'll probably take me another 6 months before I watch it.

So I'm watching New Line's first and only (iirc) HD DVD movie, and it looks great. What's with the weird intro from Guillermo talking about the movie almost killed him? :lol

So far, the story seems pretty intriguing and promising.

He basically didn't eat much throughout most of the production and dropped a ton of weight to the point where it got dangerous.

Just watched Atonement on HD DVD.

Ok movie, didn't really get into it that much, but I never read or heard about the novel, so it seems those people would enjoy it more.

The PQ is really good though, some shots look absolutely great.

Ok I think I fucked up I am Legend when I pressed Top Menu and went to the alternatve version. Ok so this ending is suppose to be better? The fuck? The movie just leaves you feeling empty at the end.

Told you :) MIB is still technically under embargo, but figured you guys would connect the dots.

Anyone getting this $45 disc of 17 minutes of earth rising?

from thedigitalbits.com
Finally this afternoon, you can now pre-order that NHK Earthrise Blu-ray Disc from Pony Canyon (that we mentioned the other day) from Amazon.co.jp and also CD Japan (note that if you order from CD Japan, there's a coupon code available here good for 500 yen, or about $5, off your order). The disc itself is officially called Kaguya Tsuki Sekai Hiko (Kaguya is the name of the JAXA probe that shot the video) and it will include 17 minutes of high-def footage of the Moon and Earth set to classical music. It'll set you back about $45, but some of you (like me) might find it worth the cost. Special thanks to all the readers who sent in these links. For the record, here's a taste of what you're going to see.

I was excited when I firt heard the were going to do this but thats a bit much for me.

If you've seen Blazing Saddles and didn't like it, that's cool.

But if you've never watched it because you didn't care for Mel's later movies, give it a shot. Unlike most of his movies, Mel didn't write this one. It's more on the satire end and less parody/yuks (though it has its share of those, too).

Brooks did help write it, with Richard Pryor and Andrew Bergman.

I think it's hilarious, and I suspect a lot of that is due to Pryor.

Finally got my copy of Rescue Dawn (HDDVD). Took only three weeks to arrive from euro land.:lol

Edit: dammit, I need to reread my post before finishing them...:lol

Can someone spoil the alternate ending of I Am Legend for me please?
He gives the cured girl to the zombies, who don't attack him in his lab and then they all leave.... It's just as stupid as the other ending except we don't know if the survivor's colony actually exists/Will Smith doesn't die

Ugh, the movie is SO FUCKING GOOD until the girl and the kid show up. So frustrating.

Anyone care to trade for an unopened copy of Ratatouille on Blu Ray? :lol

I went to the Target sale but, by the time I got there, Ratatouille was the only one on sale they had left. (Fortunately, it was the main one I wanted) Since I couldn't do anything else, I went ahead and bought one copy and got another free. Now I have three copies of Ratatouille. :lol

I'm about to go ahead and watch it. I'll pop back in with my impressions of the BR later. (I already know I love the movie itself.)

spaceace.jpg

Got this from the nice Digital Leisure people over in Canada. The amount of work to save Space Ace from its Laserdisc and CD Rom days is incredible. It's still pretty gritty, but its detailed and colorful. A must have for any old school SA fans.

watched Michael Clayton last night, rented from itunes in HD, on my projector. Good movie, not what I was expecting - no idea what I was expecting really, maybe Erin Brockovitch crossed with every other courtroom drama. Instead it was a really nice character piece with the legal stuff just one of the threads going on.

also I was really impressed with the quality of the video. yes its 'only' 720p but I only have a 720p projector and it looked great.

I have the Matrix sitting waiting for me next. Never seen it in HD so should be a treat to hold me over until it comes out on bluray

Watched I Am Legend last night. I enjoyed it for the most part, but
I thought the "Dark Seekers" looked terrible. Completely ruined the suspension of disbelief for me.

Also, ='[ at the dog's fate.

Probably late to the party with this one, but we watched "Lord of War" last weekend. It's that gun-running film with Nicholas Cage. I liked it. It started off kind of cool and stylish and funny and then things turned dark.

My girlfriend was a bit upset by it but I figured hey, it's a film about gun runners, it's not going to make you feel good.

PQ was quite nice. Sharp, detailed, nothing mindblowing but definitely HD.

Not sure I could watch it again because, as I said, it's not a feel-good movie, so I won't be buying.

We also got around to watching Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I still like that movie. I think if it had starred any other two actors it would have been branded smart and funny and garnered great reviews. Maybe it did. Or maybe the "Brangelina" taint put people off on what I think is an entertaining and action-packed romp.

Looked and sounded great, too.

anybody got crimson tide on bluray? I love that movie just wondering about the PQ.

PQ was very good for a mid-90s film if you ask me. None of the Buena Vista titles I've seen have disappointed me.

I watched Top Gun on HD-DVD the other night and enjoyed it. Talk about bare bones, though, as it doesn't even have any special featurettes or even trailers, at least as far as I could see. The movie was soft in a couple of scenes but for the most part it looked fantastic. Some of the shots haven't aged all that well, for instance with today's tech we could film much better dogfighting scenes, but Top Gun in HD is pretty sweet. One thing that surprised me was how much I enjoyed the score. It sounded so much better than I remembered after many viewings on TNT, and I can only play up to DD+ Ex. I'd only recommend the disc to a huge fan though, I imagine it might get a double-dip.

I'm actually a big fan of Brad Pitt, think he's a decent actor, or at least I like a lot of his roles.

But that film, while fun-ish, had one of the most unbelieveavle and stupidest ending action sequences ever :lol
the whole twirly gun ballet thing where a team of crack assassins can't kill them despite them just standing out in the open.

but I suppose thats how action films go for the most part!
