No kidding. I LOVED Signs, and it'll be the second movie I do a double dip on. I hope the extras are in HD. It's a Disney movie, so I have high hopes since their releases are always top notch.

Yeah. I didn't particularly like how the ending was executed, but its still a great (and at times, amazing) movie.

The scene where Joaquin is watching the hand-cam footage on the news of the first alien sighting (the birthday party footage) ... is still to me, one of the most heart-stopping, chilling, OMGWTFBBQ moments I've ever witnessed in a movie.

When seeing it in the theaters, I seriously still felt fucked up from it AFTER the movie was over. Christ, I'm kind of getting antsy just thinking about it o_o

Video 7/10
Audio 10/10 Wow..

Extras are awesome! 11/10

Very soft on the picture...

Overall 8/10 My expectations were really high though. If only the video didnt blow ( I must mention a few scenes of course shine..but leaves you fustrated.

The PS3 was just updated to 2.20. BD-Live is now there!

* Playlist that were created in Music and Photo can now be copied along with the content they contain to a PSP system. You can play the content on the PSP system in the order that was set on the PS3.

* BD Profile 2.0 is now supported. With BDs that support BD-Live, you can access Internet content for the BD.

* Resume play can now be used on a BD or DVD even if the PS3 system has been turned off or the disc has been ejected. However, there are some discs on which resume play cannot be used.

* DivX content that exceeds 2 GB can now be played. Also, subtitles can now be displayed for DivX content.

Speaking of T2...

Picked up the BR version from Target @ $14.99. I figure I can't go wrong at that price, but I was still disappointed. The picture is indeed very soft, the detail just isn't there. I don't know how HDD gave the PQ 4/5 stars.

Rented 30 Days of Night. I remembered seeing quite a bit of mixed feelings about this around here, but I quite liked it. I haven't read the graphic novel this is based on though so I don't have that context to assess it from. I thought it was well-paced, the vampires were well -realized, (best I've seen in awhile) and I'm impressed how well they managed to turn Auckland, NZ into Barrow, Alaska.

Just finished watching The Descent for the first time, definately one of the best horror movies to come out for some time (30 Days of Night was typical vampire B movie bullshit). I don't like what the main character bitch did to the Asian chick at the end, but that only made the ending that much better.

The Kubrick stuff has amazing transfers, with the exception of Full Metal Jacket, which was re-released on Blu-ray due to a sub par transfer.

Is Clockwork a good transfer? I've been wanting to see that for awhile now.

The Descent is fucking awesome, one of my favourite horror films and overall too. The first time you really see one of the monsters is truly a "HOLY SHIT!" moment.

Though i saw it and thought it was ok, it did produce some genuine "jump" in your seat moments that werent cheap. But overall i thought it was like ripped off from the x-files and just not that good.

Actually, I watched Clockwork on HD-DVD last night (identical to the Blu release.)

The video didn't initially blow me away, but for a film nearly 40 years old it was very clean. I love the visuals in the movie and they've never been clearer, especially since I had only seen the movie on cable or VHS. The sound in particular shined, though, I'm loving these HD discs for their sound.

Although it's a step or two below 2001, it's still a very nice looking movie. The part where Alex walks through the mall picking up the two girls revealed details I had never seen before, particularly the innuendo in the song names in the Top Ten :lol When I was watching the BBC documentary on the second disc, there was some SD footage of the movie in there and it looked rough.

If you're a fan of this movie this is a great package and a very good transfer.

Yeah, guys, I know about the different strokes and all that. :lol

But I tend to understand why some movies are considered special, even if I don't appreciate or like them. And while Descent movie was definitely solid, it's getting an awful lot of praise here. I'm wondering if I missed something in terms of narrative or execution. You know, like how most people can miss all the subtexts and underlying themes in a movie like Lost in Translation. Is there something like that in Descent, or is it just a competently handled horror movie in a sea of mostly crap in that genre?

It is actually pretty good. It does make you jump quite a few times. I would say it is better than I AM LEGEND

I asked this in the main Ps3 firmware update thread but didn't get a response:

-Does the new update enabling BD Live allow you to download stuff from the Ps3 store in the background while you watch a movie? I hate having to leave my Ps3 on to download demos and movie trailers. :(

This, IMO.

You don't have any PSN games? I usually start my downloads, then play Pixel Junk Monsters, or some other offline game. Background downloading *does* work afterall :P

Signs Blu-ray. Oh yes. :D :D

The Descent is pretty good. I hated the "oh isn't she just badass" shots everytime Juno did something "cool" but other than that it's an entertaining, well-executed gore shocker.

Too bad the sequel sucks balls.

No, I own Motorstorm, which I don't play. I download demos and movie trailers off of PSN. So, anyway, does that mean that you can't? I'm at work and someone else also asked this in the other thread, but we never got a straight answer. It would be nice since BD Live opens up the net while you're watching a movie, I was just hoping it would allow for background downloading as well.

I liked Descent because it focused on making character development and interaction interesting for it's own sake rather than just as a driver for the next gore scene. The barely concealed friction between the women was well played, their reactions to the initial descent into the caves, wrestling with the environment was convincing, so when they started to get divided, the different ways in which they reacted to the situation were also more pivotal than gratuitous. That's what good horror is about - focus on the darker aspects of human psychiology, where the elements of horror in the movie are just catalysts to that, rather than the main attraction.

It's possible that no one knows at this time. Go home and try it out. Report back with your findings.

not an HD movie yet, but I just finished the book Neuromancer and I checked IMDB for any movie info. The only person cast is Hayden Christensen as Case, the protagonist of the story. WTF ARGH, I'm so pissed! I thought it would be cool to have DiCaprio or someone like that as Case, not fucking Hayden. Leo is a bit old now, but would be way better than that dud.

Next they're going to fuck up Molly, I have a pretty good idea of what she's supposed to be like.

Anyone pick up Bonnie & Clyde today? I'm interested in hearing some thoughts on the high-def version(s), as I couldn't find a single copy of either the standard or HD/BR anywhere.

Kind of put off by the high price for a catalog title, though, so I'll probably wait it out and pick up the HD-DVD off Amazon for $15 or something in a few weeks.

wow, if you were gonna call one of these films B movies, 30 Days wouldnt be it, if anything you can label it typical hollywood blockbuster 'horror'.

Descent is a B movie which does a good job of playing on natural fear of getting lost in caves with monsters and vulnerable cast. I wouldn't give it a top review but the horror genre these days seems to do nothing but churn these films out & this is a fairly enjoyable effort. I suppose horror is where the B movie prospers most?

is it just me or is the horror genre the equivalent of a dilapidated town now? nothing interesting comes out which isn't a rehash in some way. Descent = teen slasher + aliens

Just finished Babel, I quite enjoyed it. Something a bit different. Pretty moving and from a directing point of view it was very well done. Very epic yet very intimate at the same time. thumbs up.

I walked into Best Buy today and they had a loop video of Blu Rays and I couldn't help but notice how different they look. I mean comparing them running in the store and at my house..there's a HUGE difference. I noticed that in the store they seem almost 3D. It seems as though the videos are doctored or something. It doesn't look like they did anywhere else I've seen Blu Ray movies. Did anyone else notice this?

Some say that they are showing the movies in the new 120Hz TVs as the reason why they look different, but I also believe that the clips showing are doctored, they look like live footage and not real movie clips.

yeah, I thought it was coming this fall as well. Maybe they changed it to a different Pixar movie? We know Wall-E is coming in that time frame so maybe The Incredibles? Makes sense. Released Ratatouille w/Cars - the previous Pixar movie - so release Wall-E with the movie previous to Cars.

how about A instead of B, m'kay?

and 2009 isn't that far off. ;)

want a $2k Blu-Ray pointer?
