I still don't have a clue about SACD's, despite my valiant efforts. No wonder the format is niche, among other reasons. What the hell do I need to enjoy the SACD's? I have the Ps3, so that's a start. But what the hell do I have to do to listen to them in their proper form? I don't want to be like those idiots who buy HD movies and play them back on SD tvs.

I have my Ps3 hooked up via optical to my receiver, but I think I read that if you're not using HDMI, you're somehow limited with the Ps3's SACD playback. It's all so confusing. :(

You need HDMI to use it properly via the PS3.

The best way (if you don't have HDMI receiver) is to use the PS3 analog audio outs.

dude, i just present this coupon to, lets say, best buy and i get $10 off the blu ray??? which would make it 19.99 or 14.99? depending on if it comes out statrting at 29.99 or 24.99

um yeah it does. you can't do the surround sound but it has analog stereo outs.

I'm confused as to how using the stereo cables would be better than the optical connection. I really don't get this stuff, and it's no wonder these things never took off.

Because the PS3 is doing the D/A conversion from a HQ digital source (SACD) optical is a digital connection, so your receiver is doing the D/A conversion. Optical does not have enough bandwith to pass all the digital info from a SACD to your receiver. Actually it does have enough for the stereo signal, but the PS3 doesn't allow it.

confused enough?! :D

Yup. :D

Basically, if you can, just use HDMI and don't sweat it.

Ha, you know, I never even considered using the multi-out for stereo SACD playback!

Also, I was wrong before, you just need HDMI 1.1 if you let the PS3 decode the DSD to PCM.
If you want to send the DSD signal, HDMI 1.2 is needed.

EDIT:Wait, can the PS3 even send the DSD signal?
I don't use my PS3 for SACD playback.

Yup. Works at Targest the most easily.

FYI not all the PS3s play SACDs. I think only the 60/20 Gb models do.

I'm pretty sure my 80GB does, but after the previous posts, I don't think I'll even bother trying that functionality out. What a pain in the ass.

You're not using HDMI? I thought almost everyone did with their PS3s, but I guess not.

Alls you need is HDMI and HDMI receiver (all but the earliest 1.0 receivers) for multi-channel SACD.

It's only the 40giggers that can't play SACD.

For 1080p video, but my audio is optical.

I might pick up one of those later this year, but I'm quite happy with my current setup. I've been upgrading my speakers lately and I can't believe the difference I've experienced in audio. I know there are several levels more I could go in terms of gear, but I'm pretty darned happy with my setup. I'll probably get the Onkyo 605 at some point, but it's not a priority for me right now.

the biggest problem with SACD as a format is that most releases are in Europe only and also that the releases are so anemic. They release the Rolling Stones discog on SACD but don't put it anywhere on the packaging? real smart marketing there.

I'm pretty pleased to see that Sony's releasing a Blu-ray of Youth Without Youth on 5/18. It's surprising that they're going for it considering how poorly this did theatrically and critically (though I'm still very excited about seeing it) and I don't imagine there'll be much in the way of extras. The visuals alone make this a must-have, and the soundtrack (which you can listen to in its entirety here) is gorgeous.

While I haven't really tested it ... assuming the PS3's DAC is good (for doing stereo SACD), is ... interesting :p

Yeah I didn't realize I would have to do that until I already bought a few SACDs to test. :lol It sounds better than a CD over optical but I don't really have another SACD player to compare it to. I will probably upgrade to a HDMI receiver at some point, but until then I am just buying vinyl. :P

edit: hmm it seems in some stealth update the PS3 will now send SACD out optical... but only at PCM 44.1 stereo. which is the exact same as CD, so I am not sure what exactly the point is.

edit some more: it also seems if you enable 'bitmapping' under music it will send CD audio at 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz

last edit I swear: No the PS3 does not output the DSD stream yet.

edit: Nevermind, HighDefDigest just assumed they were for North America, they didn't read the statement thoroughly.

I have heard mostly good things so far, and I loved the original with Michael Caine and Laurence Oliver.
Not for everyone though, it is a Kenneth Branagh movie so it is very dialogue heavy.

I saw this on the shelf today. It's not due out until next week? huh. (I never see anything on shelves early so I'm just a little surprised.)

The Terminator 2 Ultimate HD Edition is one of the most elaborate projects we've ever realized. It took us over two years of work from the concept to the completion of the final disc. Programming alone required more than a year of hard work.

Altogether it took us

* 3000.5 litres of coffee
* 13,721 sheets of paper
* 300 hours of viewing bonus material
* 250 movie screenings
* more than 100 meetings hours
* over 5000 graphics and
* more than 51,000 lines of source code.

We think it has been worth the effort!

saw it in the theater and enjoyed it.. It also got a great response at the Venice film festival. It's very much one of those one room play things like Bug or most of Reservoir Dogs.

So... interested in a little Star Trek news? We have it today from a couple of angles that Paramount is currently working on another release of the Star Trek feature films, presumably to take advantage of next year's debut (in theaters and eventually on DVD and Blu-ray) of the new J.J. Abrams big screen reboot of the franchise. Our own industry sources have recently hinted that several of the previous feature films are currently receiving brand new high-def transfers and a good digital scrubbing to prepare them for future Blu-ray release. Meanwhile, over on his own website, long-time Trek scribe David Gerrold (also writer of the excellent Martian Child) had this to say yesterday (scroll down to the "And Finally..." part):

"Tim King Productions invited me down to the Paramount lot to be interviewed for a documentary. Paramount is planning to rerelease all ten Star Trek movies on DVD with a bonus disc of extra material, including an interview with folks who were in the crowd scene in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Most of those folks were Star Trek fans especially recruited for the privilege, so they gathered a few of us together and let us reminisce for awhile in front of a couple cameras. Among the attendees were Bjo Trimble (she and her husband John created the letter campaign that got the original series renewed in 68) and Chris Doohan, Jimmy Doohan's son. It was a fun couple of hours."

Hay guys, I got a 42" 1080p Sharp Aquos. Thinking about getting a blu-ray player, but just to make sure, is the quality of Blu-Ray that much better than digital movie downloads? With my cable service I get movies in 1080i, but I'm thinking the lack of compression would make blu-ray worth it. amirite?

Taking this at face value I will say yes there is a world of difference 99% of the time.
Alot of "hd" cable programming is just upscaled to begin with.

That will eventually be the most impressive HD disc ever.

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/...6f9a21474&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss

Stan Glascow, the president of Sony Electronics, held his semi-annual update today in New York, and there were a few new tidbits.

He was, predictably, bullish on the fate of the Blu-ray disc format, now that Sony’s technology has won against Toshiba’s HD-DVD. He acknowledged that the company now has to convince people they need to upgrade their DVD players .

He talked of a slow steady decline in the prices of Blu-ray players, which Sony now sells for $399 and up. He said that prices will fall to $299 for this Christmas and may be under $200 by the end of 2009. Sony isn’t the only one that makes Blu-ray players; Sharp, Samsung and other big electronics companies also compete with Sony.

Mr. Glasgow expressed hope that price levels wouldn’t collapse the way they did for DVD players. To protect against this, he said the Blu-ray Association, the group that controls the Blu-ray standard, has not licensed it to any manufacturers in China. (Cheap players from China were a large part of the collapse of the DVD player market.)

“Will there be Chinese players? Yes,” he said. “We don’t need to drive that and hand the technology over” any time soon, he said.

Sony still hasn't learned. You want blu ray to take off get lower priced players out there damn it.
