There no regions for HD DVD, even if they still put it on the packaging.

well I had some credit to burn so I picked up Appleseed since I found it early. I'll watch it in a bit as I have to put my son to bed for his nap first.

Lucky. I guess I'll wait next week. Wanna take a pic of the disc?

Man I want that T2 HD-DVD... don't particularly care to spend 40 bucks on it though. I'll have to keep my eye out for an import deal in the coming weeks.

I hope Wal-Mart has it ins tore for this price... perhaps I should print it out now so I can bring it in and do a price match if I must...

Can you use cupons like these with price matches at stores like BB?

It looks really really awesome. I pray that something similar comes to blu-ray.

Just finished with Into the Wild:

What a great movie..I think of him as a terrible coward overall. I know to some this is probably the complete opposite that they think of him.

We watched the same movie :lol

And yup, excellent movie. The performances were great all around.

4.5/5 for me. The AVC encode looks great. Couldn't find any big flaws except in some shots the blacks weren't totally black. I don't think anyone can be disappointed.

I saw stardust last night and it looks very disappointing. I never saw it in the theaters so maybe that's how its supposed to look, but man is that one flat looking HD movie. the sound was mostly pretty weak as well.

I thought the movie itself was ok.

Watched The Host last night. Decent enough film, twisted Korean Cinema as always, but MAN was it a good transfer. I was impressed by many many scenes.

Bill Hunt has some suggestions to the Blu-ray camp that I think we can all agree on:

1. Blu-ray Disc hardware prices obviously need to come down by the 4th quarter to attract more mainstream consumers to the format. Offering Blu-ray player/HDTV deals makes sense, given the FCC's mandated deadline to switch to all-digital broadcasting by early next year (at midnight on 2/17/09 to be exact - click here for details), but it would be good if there were at least a few BD players priced in the $250 range or better by the holidays.

2. The Blu-ray Disc Association needs to make profile 2.0 support MANDATORY on all new players ASAP, and all hardware manufacturers need to make their new player models profile 2.0 compatible ASAP in order to avoid consumer confusion. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. We're getting many e-mails from readers who are interested in buying into Blu-ray now but are confused by the multiple profiles (and if that's you, I'll explain them in a moment). This is especially important when you consider how many firmware updates have been required to ensure hardware compatibility with software - built-in Internet connectivity is key to making this process easier and more consumer friendly.

3. Blu-ray Disc software prices should come down a little as well in time for the holidays. They're still too high for most people - definitely too high to encourage impulse purchasing. Rebates and incentives should be offered to encourage BD upgrades of catalog titles for people who may already own the same titles on DVD (as Buena Vista has recently done). It also wouldn't hurt to have a few more MAJOR and much-loved catalog titles available on Blu-ray before the end of the year (including more older classics). There's no better incentive for a movie-lover to upgrade than the release of a favorite film title in 1080p quality, and at a price that isn't going to break the budget.

4. The Blu-ray supporting studios who have previously supported HD-DVD need to release Blu-ray versions of those titles previously exclusive to HD-DVD ASAP. This is especially important with key titles like The Matrix, V for Vendetta, Heroes: Season One, Battlestar Galactica: Season One, Transformers, Top Gun and Star Trek: The Original Series Remastered - Season One. Those titles encouraged many people to buy HD-DVD players, and now many of those people feel like they've been led up the creek without a paddle. Meanwhile, the exclusivity of those titles to HD-DVD is a major sore spot with Blu-ray consumers. There's a lot of goodwill that needs to be restored all around with high-def consumers (Special word to Paramount and DreamWorks: Having now abandoned your high-def consumers not once but TWICE, you guys have a LOT of work to do in this area).

5. ALL BLU-RAY DISC TITLES, WHENEVER POSSIBLE, SHOULD BE RELEASED WITH LOSSLESS AUDIO. In the same way that anamorphic enhancement became standard on DVD to ensure the highest video quality possible, lossless audio is critical to ensuring the highest sonic quality on Blu-ray. 1080p video is clearly stunning, but it needs the sound to match it.

Ha! What is standard should have been mandatory. (Yes I know, TV shows would have to be exempt). I did a quick search on Amazon for Full Screen edition DVDs. Result: 24,877

I agree with #4 wholeheartedly.

Anamorphic is different from aspect ratio. The overwhelming majority of widescreen dvds are anamorphic enhanced.

Bill Hunt must read our posts. I swear.

Bill Hunt is an audiophile more than a Videophile.

I'm sort of the same way. Picture quality doesn't matter all that much to me. My audio setup costs 4x more than my video setup. As long as the video is a 4/5 stars, I'm good.

So far, only Lionsgate, Sony, and Disney have taken to High Def using excellent video and audio.

Blu-ray enthusiasts usually blasts Warner for their inconsistent low bitrate transfers, but what irks me are the 640k Dolby track they put on their releases.

For example, I want to get the Alexander Blu-ray disc. I love Epics (this one sucks) but it's still visually stunning. But the fucking audio is terrible.

I'm waiting for the next special edition release which will probably have better audio.

Good news on Fox finally starting to drop their SRP on Blu-ray titles. When can we expect to see these price drops reflected at Amazon and other retailers?

Bill Hunt's latest is right on the money. There's your blu-print (cheesy pun, I know) for success, BDA and DEG...follow it.

Fox is dropping the price because they weren't fucking selling. No one wants to pay $40 for a bare bones catalog title. Price drops on Amazon should be immediate.

True. I know I wasn't buying them unless they were in some super deal like a BOGO or something. I only own two Fox films on Blu-ray because of the asstastic pricing.

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Lionsgate/High-Def_Disc_Marketing/Disc_Announcements/Lionsgate_Boxes_Up_Rambo_Trilogy_on_Blu-ray/1547

Announcing yet more Rambo on high-def, Liongate says it will bundle the first three films in the Sly Stallone franchise as a Blu-ray box set this May.

As we've previously reported, Lionsgate has turned May 27 into unofficial "Rambo Day" on Blu-ray, announcing a concurrent release of stand-alone editions of 'Rambo: First Blood Part II,' 'Rambo III' and the recent theatrical release 'Rambo.' (Lionsgate released the first film in the explosive saga, 'First Blood,' on Blu-ray back in February 2007.)

For fans who want to own the entire original trilogy at a lower price, Lionsgate plans to package the first three films together as the 'Rambo Box Set,' also to be made available on Blu-ray May 27. (Oddly, the fourth 'Rambo' is not included in the set, and will remain available only as a stand-alone release.)

Carrying a suggested list price of $49.98, the 'Rambo' bundle will offer a savings of at least $20 compared to buying each title separately. ('First Blood' currently carries an MSRP of $29.95, while 'Rambo II' and 'Rambo III' are each priced at $19.95.)

Note that the 'Rambo Box Set' will be identical to the stand-alone versions, with no new bonus features or other exclusives announced.

Finally, Lionsgate has issued box art for the 'Rambo' bundle:

Some news bites from Home Media Magazine March 9-15:

***Daft Punk Makes Blu-ray***

July 22 release on Blu-ray and standard-def DVD. Experimental film called Electroma, mastered especially for Blu-ray disc. Both versions come in a SteelBook case, with a 40-page picture book.

***Survey: HD to Soar in UK***
Entertainment Media Research survey finds 24% of respondents in the UK said they will watch packaged HD media over just 7% who plan to download. Survey was conducted before the demise of HD DVD, and found that consumers were still reluctant to buy during a format war.

[Presumably now, the HDM number might even be higher now that the war is over and consumers can buy with confidence.]

Chart numbers are all up too, didn't know if it was cool to post them here, or if it's just too soon. Go here if you want them:

Oh hell yeah about the Rambo Box - providing that the transfers are good I'll pick it up without a doubt!

Ok that's it I'm not buying another Rocky movie until I get a box set - it seems that Catalog titles with sequels just get box sets anyway.

you mean picture quality? Sorry, no capture card, my camera has been giving me grief in regards to blacks, and finally I have a 19" computer monitor running 1080i. Until I can afford a bigger TV (i.e. until I get hired somewhere) it does me fine though.

I have to say the movie far exceeded any expectations I had, especially since I've never seen an Appleseed movie before or read anything about the series. I especially liked how the doves, John Woo's signature piece from his movies,
are the bad guys
, kinda. The movie looked amazing from a visual standpoint as well as a CG standpoint. I guess it's cel-shaded? It really helped with the uncanny valley stuff as it didn't try to give the characters flesh tones or pores or anything. it was like a traditional animated film but with CG instead. It looked really nice.

The movie itself though had some flaws. Nothing too horrible, just stuff that makes me wonder about the person who was supposed to be going through making sure there weren't continuity errors. For example, the aforementioned doves. I didn't see one
get hurt in the attack
and yet they find one and it's like Star Wars -
"Look sir, droids!"
The film telegraphed some important plot points fairly heavily and it annoyed me but at the same time I guess I liked it since it let me watch the movie and not think about where the movie was trying to go.

This may have been overlooked but it is kind of interesting...
http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hom030908/index.php?startid=10

In the last few paragraphs of the Dirty Harry story it says that Warner plans to release ten of these releases this year.
The Dirty Harry one is the movie in a hard cover case with a 40 page hardcover book with detailed production diaries photos and other things.
The interesting thing is that it says that others planned are Woodstock, Gone With the Wind, North by Northwest, and what looks like versions of Blade Runner and the Harry Potter movies.

Already got it on DVD, but oh my god, this film is going to look beyond incredible in HD.

edit: HOLY SHIT it's $130!!!

Just realised that would be the MRSP, phew, should be cheaper than that on Movietyme.

In that article they mention that Gone With the Wind and North by Northwest are coming this year. Also, sounds like we have some Harry Potter double dipping in our future.

I haven't been following many movie releases in HD, so I was wondering if fellow Gaffers could help me out. Have these movies been released on Blu-ray yet? If not, is there a plan to release them?

- Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
- Back to the Future trilogy
- Jurassic Park
- Arrested Development (definitely worth rebuying)

I was thinking of more movies last night, but these are the only ones that come to mind right now. Anyways, thanks for the help.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is Disney, and there are still...issues...surrounding Roger Rabbit and them. Iger hasn't yet patched things up with Spielberg that Eisner totally fucked up. Until he does, Spielberg isn't letting Disney do anything with Roger Rabbit. They can't use the character in the parks, and in the Roger Rabbit ride at Disneyland they even had to change "Benny" the Cab to "Lenny" the Cab.

Complete epic is here:

I have the UK version, which is basically the Director's Cut disc from the French release, and it is really nice. You can get it for 9 English pounds from BlahDVD.com, with 1 pound shipping. Very reasonable, and I don't think the German release will look that much better. Although the German release does have much more content.

Write a letter to Universal Pictures. Those are all theirs.

I was under the impression that all studios were supporting Blu-ray now...I guess I was wrong.

Thanks for the answers, guys. Hopefully everything gets worked out between the higher-ups so I can finally get these movies in HD.

In due time, my friend. In due time.

Picked up the following:

Fry's Electronics
American Gangster (19.99)
Zodiac (17.99)

Best Buy
The Big Lebowski (10.49)
The Pianist (10.49)

Every single one of the above is an outstanding HD movie.. well actually, I haven't been able to see AG, because my wife wants to watch it with me.
