I saw the bankjob over the weekend. Was completely different than what i was expecting.
And didnt know it was based on a true story.

It was pretty awesome, cant wait for the lionsgate blu-ray release.

Coming to BR (obviously) and HD-DVD...

Ratatouille is the most complete of all HD movies ever made. It's a great flick, got top tier audio and video, and is full of HD extras. Can't beat that.

Other than Cars (which IMO is not that great of a flick), the only other one is Blade Runner. If the extras were in HD, it would be great, but there's just so much of it, it's fine by me.

I'm more surprised by how good Blade Runner sounds on my 5.2 setup.

Did you take those screen caps yourself?
If so could you do me a favor and capture the scene at about the 56 minute mark? Where remy sits down with the grapes in the red and white checkered cloth. I requested several times earlier in the thread but no one obliged. :(

Can do, but tomorrow. Heading for bed in a few mins. :/

It's up there for sure. My top five pq are (in no specific order):
Transformers
Ratatouille
Shrek 3
PoTC 2
Matrix

But I really cant' decide which is best overall. Plus Casino Royale, Hot Fuzz, and Planet Earth are right up there with the ones I listed. :(

i just watched Beowulf this weekend, i think i'd put it at the VERY TOP of PQ right now, its really good

i went against my better judgement and picked it up on hd-dvd, but its top of the line, some of the detail is amazing, particularly the scene with the dragon at the end

other notable HD media regarding PQ (i won't repeat anything listed above)

Apocalypto
King Kong
Corpse Bride

My personal 5 in terms of PQ (not in particular order):

Zodiac (no non-CG movie beats it IMO)
King Kong
Transformers
Ratatouille
Hot Fuzz

i agree 100%

i was going to list Zodiac myself but thought otherwise, you can really tell it was shot in HD, some of the shots in the movie are stunning, i just think the nature and type of film doesnt really lend itself quite as well for demo material i guess

but its an amazing transfer

Awesome thanks so much!

Ratatouille is an amazing disc.
I think Crank is up there for me, pretty much all demo audio and video.
Black Hawk Down and a few others i cant recall right now.

That movie sounded amazing, but the PQ really isn't that impressive. I'm guessing it was director's intent, but this movie just doesn't really stand out PQ wise. It was the first HD movie I double dipped on, though.

I don't think it's coming out on HD DVD.

It was the best looking bluray up to that point. When it came out everything was still MPEG-2 :lol It was very grainy but that was the directors intent. Personally I am pretty pissed when they try and do grain reduction or smoothing on a bluray release (see US version of Pans Labyrinth or The Assasination of Jesse James) The whole point for me is to see the film as it was intended in the theater.

Wait, theres a BHD re-release? Or are you talking HD-DVD Import?

Ratatouille and Cars certainly are one of the best BD's out there PQ wise. Still, Corpse Bride is the most impressive I've seen so far (bd25 + vc1 iirc). I can't seem to find Crank though over here, is it really that impressive to watch?

No he means he had it on DVD and bought it on blu-ray. i too own it on dvd and bought it on blu-ray.

There is grain, but it is intended and it still looks pretty damn good, and the sound is stellar. I have used it for demo material.

I thought BHD was pretty damn impressive. But then it might have been the movie being so good that distracted me from the grain.

A couple of days ago somebody posted a coupon in this thread for Dan in Real Life and No Country for Old Men. Does anyone know if those were legit? And if they are, will they work at a Wal Mart?

I think it's amazing.

Textures and details seem to jump right off the screen at you. I've never been so awestruck by brick walls and facial stubble, lol.

The film was shot using digital cameras and some scenes are overexposed or have other effects, but throughout, it's a revelation.

I liked the movie better than I thought, too. Pretty funny with some spectacular action setpieces.

Outside of Crank, I think the movies I remember best for amazing PQ are Ratatouille and Corpse Bride.

Oh, and I was surprised by how good Black Snake Moan looks too--and not just because Christina Ricci spends half the movie in her underwear.

edit: OK, I just looked, and I'm a dope. Also: Shoot 'Em Up, 2001, and Nine Inch Nails: Beside You In Time.

LOL! Anyone post this yet?

Blu-Ray Will Likely Catch On Despite Flaws
from the patience dept

I've had my own share of criticisms of the Blu-Ray format in the past, but even I think the thesis that Blu-ray is doomed is over the top. Don Reisinger claims that having won the battle with HD-DVD, Sony's Blu-Ray format is still going to lose the war of consumer indifference. I think there's clearly something to this. Clearly, lots of people are still buying DVDs, and the reasons Reisinger identifies -- inflexible DRM, high prices, many consumers' inability to tell the difference between HD and regular definition content -- are certainly reasons to expect uptake of the Blu-Ray format to be relatively slow. But I think it's important to keep the longer-term perspective in mind. People were saying many of the same things about the DVD format a decade ago: complaining about the price and wondering if consumers would care about the quality difference. But the DVD format is indisputably successful. Prices came down. Consumers got used to the higher quality of DVD. It didn't happen in a year, but it took less than a decade.

The same thing will happen with Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray players today are no more expensive than DVDs were a decade ago, and the PS3 doubles as a video game console. As people upgrade their TVs, more and more of them will get used to high-def picture quality. We've pointed out before that faster bandwidth will ultimately render physical formats obsolete. But fortunately for Sony, as bad as Blu-Ray's DRM is, the download services' DRM is even worse. You can at least be reasonably sure you'll be able to play your Blu-Ray disc on most TVs, something that's often not true of video download services. So in the short run, Blu-Ray probably has time to reach critical mass among consumers before Hollywood figures out how to design a movie download service consumers will actually be interested in. Blu-Ray would catch on faster if it weren't for the issues Reisinger identifies, but I don't think there's much doubt Sony and its partners will sell tens of millions of the things.

This. A lot of the movie is really dark and people whose TVs have shitty blacks are SOL there, but even those poor bastards will have their jaws on the floor for stuff like the dragon attack.

what's the big hurry to get Dirty Harry out on HD? Does anyone really care beyond the first one?

I mean it's a cool set I just can't see many people being die hard Dirty Harry fans.

:lol With Fox handling MGM's home video shit they'll put out separate bare bones editions for $40 each.

Too bad Warner no longer had the rights to MGM stuff otherwise they could've done a set like that and probably would've.

there's a moratorium on the movies and it's being held up by a Dirty Harry video game. They wanted to release all of this stuff last year (I think - maybe it was 2 years ago) but this video game and its delays are extending things.

http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hom030908/index.php?startid=38 - last paragraph.

i like those super cool deluxe edition things in concept but then I only end up watching the film :lol - cool packaging though - I'm a sucker for that shit.

Well I hope this at signals that people are starting to give a crap about decent design on bluray covers. Part of the appeal at least for me is having a nice box for my physical media. Some of the early bluray cases where pretty ghetto looking. If I am expected to pay a premium for bluray I would like the box to be at least as nice as the DVD if not better.

Bonnie and Clyde is also nice but not a fan of the film.

I wished FOX used a different cover for the blu-ray version of I, Robot. Just copying the dvd cover just plain sucks.

Fox should have used this cover

51G0vdm8x3L._SS500_.jpg

Well at least the "I am Legend" cover looks good.

PS, any word on Sin City on blu-ray?

Saw 3:10 to Yuma. Wow, I loved it. The DD EX mix was fantastic. One thing I love about the extra space on BD's is that it gives studios more options in terms of what audio to include. I like it when they use that extra space to kick out an extra DTS track or a DD EX track for those of us using optical.

The PQ was good, though there was certainly something.........off........about it. I think somebody explained it earlier in this thread.

edit:

Oh, and I've been meaning to ask the audio guys: is there a setting on the Ps3 to enhance dialog? If not, what can I do on my receiver to raise the dialog level? I'm loving my audio, but sometimes I have to crank it up a bit to hear the dialog, then the action scenes are far too loud.
